Ghoulish Trail 23 Oct 2015 There is a scottish saying; From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties and things that go bump in the night, good Lord, deliver us!

On 23 October, 41 students were led by Society of Paranormal Invstigators (SPI), which introduced them to different gadgets used to identify and obtain information on paranomal phenomena.

The first destination was a visit to Pasir Ris swamp. Various spots in Pasir Ris are rumored to be haunted, and this leads us to explore one of the most prominent places. The bird watching tower located in Paris Ris swamp has long been touted as a place full of paranormal activities. This tower is roughly about 4 storeys tall and it has been reported that several people had committed suicide there. Additionally, pontianaks are said to reside around the area giving visitors a rather hair-raising experience.

The second location was Bukit Brown cemetery which holds the largest tomb belonging to Ong Sam Leong (1857-1918), a businessman, plantation owner and contractor to the mines of Christmas Island. Occupying 600 square meters, about the size of 10 three-roomed HDB flats, Ong Sam Leong’s grand tomb was decorated with a 15m-long platform complete with stone statues of deities, lions and 2m-tall sikh guard.

The experience was not only thrilling, it was also educational and fun.

Thanks to the advancement of technology today,

video interview is becoming more common for

companies to conduct virtual meet-ups. Often, these

interviews are done via a common technology which

involves the candidate and the interviewer

interacting with each other. Here are six tips that

may help you to ace for your next video interview.

1 Check your tech. Be familiar with the webcam and microphones of your computer. Test the connection and make sure that there are no technical issues

that will hinder the interviews. 2 Prepare your surroundings Check and make sure that the background of where you will be sitting at is suitable and not visually

distracting. Also make sure there isn’t any auditory disturbance which may disrupt your conversation with the interviewer.

3 Dress to impress

While it is too tempting just to wear your pyjamas since you are doing the interview at the comfort of your own home, dressing

up appropriately will display your professionalism to the position offered. Remember, appearance does matter.

4 Look at the camera, not the screen. Eye contact is critical during an in-person interview, and it adds a nice

touch on a video interview as well. Keep looking at the webcam as you would be looking at the interviewer.

5 Think about timing

Time is of the essence. Be mindful of your answers and make sure that it is precise and to the point. Avoid

dragging your answers as it may bore the interviewer and may lower your chances to getting the job.

6 Relax, keep calm and remember that it is just another process

Remember that while you certainly need to

be calm, collected, and confident in order to score the job, the interview is not a life-or-death situation. The interviewers are humans, too—and they will understand and forgive a few minor nervous blips.

The first day at a new workplace is always stressful especially if it is your first job. Although you already

knew the job scope and responsibilities, it will be the first time you will be working together with your

team. However, being nervous is the last thing that you need. Most importantly, you will need to get

yourself prepared and channel your energy to get on the right foot for your first day at work.

Below are some tips on how you can make your first day a beneficial one:

1. Show up early

Reaching your work place early, preferably fifteen

minutes will show your enthusiasm being in the

organisation. It will also save you the trouble of

being late in case the journey to work got delayed.

2. Prepare to ask questions

Asking questions will demonstrate your curiosity

and desire to learn. However, asking too much

within a short period of time may annoy the people

around you. So manage your questions timely and

remember that it takes plenty of time to master the

job.

3. Listen and observe

Listen, listen and listen. Listening will give you the

opportunity to hear the goals of your boss and

colleagues. It is also a chance for you to grasp the

big picture and the direction of the company. This

will help you to prioritise the work which will be

given to you, knowing the importance of each task.

4. Address your new colleagues by their

names.

Remembering names of many people within a

short period of time can be a bit hasty especially if

you are working in a big team. Try to remember

the names of those stationed near you and team

members that you need to work closely with.

Addressing them by their names shows sincerity

and aids your memory to remember them.

5. Don’t turn down lunch

Accept the offer to go for lunch with your boss and

co-workers if they invite you. It is important to

show that you are eager to know them better and

be part of the team.

6. Smile

Smiling does wonders. You will appear

approachable and positive in the eyes of your new

colleagues. Make it clear to everyone
