  • N. Murray EdwardsAlumnus, friend, namesake

Mr. Edwards has had a long-standing relationship with the University of Saskatchewan’s business school as a student, alumnus and donor. He believes strongly in the value of a business education. Over the years, he has given back to his alma mater so students today continue to receive an outstanding business education at the University of Saskatchewan.

In June 2000, when the PotashCorp Centre addition was opened, the N. Murray Edwards Case Room was unveiled. One of several smart rooms in the centre, this case room seats 75 students, is equipped with up-to-date educational technologies and is used by faculty and students across campus.

Throughout his university years in Saskatoon, Mr. Edwards had a keen interest in investing. On October 3, 2002 he rang the official bell and the N. Murray Edwards MarketWatch went live. This stock ticker board, installed on the main floor of the PotashCorp Centre, still provides continuous stock and commodity information, bringing the business world to the halls of the business school. Faculty, staff and especially students benefit from the direct link to the investment industry.

On July 24, 2007, the University of Saskatchewan very proudly acknowledged Mr. Edwards’ continued relationship with the business school by transforming the College of Commerce to the N. Murray Edwards School of Business. Mr. Edwards’ investment in the business school allows us to gain recognition with our new brand and helps to position the business school as one of the top five in Canada.

At the University’s Spring Convocation Ceremony on June 2nd, 2011, Mr. Edwards was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree, the highest honour the University of Saskatchewan can bestow.

Mr. Edwards continues to remain truly engaged in the activities of the business school. His $200,000 contribution to the George S. Dembroski Student-Managed Portfolio Trust during the 2011-2012 academic year allowed the fund to open with a pool of $500,000 to invest.

Not only does Mr. Edwards continue to invest in our financial future, but he also gives his time and knowledge by serving on the Edwards School of Business Dean’s Advisory Council. The students, faculty and staff of the Edwards School are grateful for Mr. Edwards’ continued support.

  • Program planning allows you to select classes for the coming year and prepares you for registration in the summer. Many of the upper-year COMM courses require departmental approval, and submitting a program plan allows you to request permission for these courses.

For 2016/17, the five restricted majors in the Edwards School of Business are: Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, and Operations Management. The Management major is not restricted. In 2015, the cut-off averages for the majors were:

    Quota 2015 Cut-off Accounting 120 73.5333% Finance 90 69.6667% Human Resources 45 65.20% Marketing 50 68.3438% Operations Management 35 66.5714%

The 2016 admission cut-off averages for the restricted majors are determined after the Pick-a-Major process has ended and are not available at time of printing, but were communicated when students were notified of their major.

300 and 400 level courses in the restricted majors require departmental approval. Without departmental approval, you will not be allowed to register in restricted COMM courses when registration starts in June.

RESTRICTED COURSES: Most 300 and 400 level COMM courses require departmental approval. See pages 14-17 to see which courses are restricted.

In addition to applying for restricted classes, program planning also helps ensure that you are registering for the appropriate number of classes to fulfil degree requirements and qualify for graduation, while ensuring that prerequisite requirements are met. See pages 14-17 for the list of prerequisites for all COMM classes.

Permission is granted for the course but not a particular term or section. Registration is first come, first serve in available sections.

Edwards analyses the program planning data to determine class demand and will attempt to adjust the scheduling of offerings to meet the demand. Due to budget constraints, it is not always possible to meet the high demand levels for some classes.

    INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAM PLANNING

    4

  • You will select your choice of classes for the coming year using the Program Planner software, available online or on your mobile device by visiting: http://edwards.usask.ca/planner/programplanner

Students have from Tuesday, January 19 to Friday, January 29 at 4:30pm to submit their program plan*. You can use the blank work sheet on the last page of the guide to pre-plan your courses before you submit your final choices online.

∗Students applying to the Business Co-operative Education program will have access to Program Planner from January 27-29 only.

NOTE: Students only have to plan courses for the upcoming Spring/Summer session and the upcoming academic year (currently you are planning for 2016/2017)

All students entering 3rd and 4th year previously admitted to a major must submit a plan each year until they graduate.

All students who submit a program plan will be sent a follow-up letter by EMAIL no later than Tuesday, February 16th. The letter will confirm the restricted courses you have been granted departmental approval for. Please contact the Edwards Student & Faculty Services Office if you do not receive an email. Do not delete the email, you should save it (or print it) as it is your official confirmation into classes for Spring/Summer 2016 and Fall/Winter 2016/17.

The program planning letter will be sent to your University of Saskatchewan email address.

    COMPLETING YOUR PROGRAM PLAN

    5

  • Log into the program planner online or on your mobile device using your U of S NSID and password. http://edwards.usask.ca/planner/programplanner

Tap a slot to select a course for that slot. Courses that are commonly used in that slot will appear at the top of the list.

Enter the course you wish to take, or select a recommended one. Errors will be displayed as you attempt to slot the course, so don’t worry about making a mistake. If you wish to see a full list of courses available, you may do so in the course catalogue, available at: http://www.usask.ca/calendar/coursecat/.

You can slot up to 12 credit units in Spring/Summer 2016 and 30 credit units for the 2016/17 academic year.

A Program Planning tutorial is available on our YouTube account – http://youtube.com/ESBUofS

CHOOSING YOUR CLASSES The following screenshot demonstrates what the program planner could look like for a student entering their fourth year of the Marketing major. The grey italicized classes are ones that have not yet been taken; tapping on these slots will give you hints for classes that could fit there. You will be able to choose core courses, major courses, and your elective courses.

Submit your Program Plan for approval. Once complete, simply submit the Program Plan and wait for approval. If you didn’t quite get your Program Plan done in one session, don’t worry, it’s automatically saved until you log back in.

    USING THE PROGRAM PLANNER SOFTWARE

    http://edwards.usask.ca/planner/programplannerhttp://www.usask.ca/calendar/coursecat/http://youtube.com/ESBUofS

  • COURSES WITH PREREQUISITES/CO-REQUISITES When you insert a course with a prerequisite, co-requisite or year-in-program requirement, the Program Planner software checks to see if the requirements have been met.

ELECTIVES In Planner there are several slots designated for electives. Electives provide students with the opportunity to customize their education. You will need to choose electives that satisfy major, free senior, and non-Commerce requirements (see page 10 for details), and designate them for the appropriate year. The electives slots will not give you suggestions for classes to take, but you will be able to search classes available at the university.

A search for “ENG” will bring up all English classes that are available. Click on one, and you will see the course description at the top of the dialogue box. Click “Save” to slot the selected class.

RESTRICTED and NON-RESTRICTED COURSES If you wish to register in any restricted courses, you must include them on your Program Plan (in either the major or free senior elective area). However, non-restricted courses can be changed prior to registration. See pages 10-13 for a comprehensive list of which courses require departmental approval.

RESTRICTED COURSES: Most 300 and 400 level COMM courses require departmental approval.

NON-RESTRICTED COURSES: 100 and 200 level COMM courses, 300 and 400 level courses in the areas of Business Law, 300 level Management courses, COMM 306, COMM 410, COMM 494, and all non-Commerce courses.

*COMM 300 requires departmental approval in the spring/summer sessions.

COMM 304 will have a number of seats reserved for Accounting students when registration opens in June.

IMPORTANT COURSE RELEASE DATE – Friday, July 8 after 8:30am

Unused seats in most 300 and 400 level restricted COMM courses (excluding COMM 308, 401, and 402) will be released to ALL Edwards students. The ‘departmental approval required’ will be removed and registration will be first come, first serve on PAWS after 8:30am. This is a manual process performed by office staff.

  • COMM 498.3: Global Strategy and Organizational Design Prerequisite(s): COMM 342.3 This course integrates key organizational concepts, functions, and tools needed to analyze industries, firm competences, and competitiveness in order to create a firm’s global strategy. Emphasis is placed on developing analytical, theoretical, and problem solving capabilities facing global firms in a rapidly changing business context. This course aims to equip students with an understanding of how effective implementation of global strategy depends on the choice of organizational design and structures within the global firms, and how to manage effectively in multicultural and dynamic institutional contexts. NOTE: This class may be used as a major elective in Human Resources.

    SUMMER STUDY TOUR

COMM 498.3: The Management of Innovation Prerequisite(s): Preference given to students who have completed 30 credits in the B.Comm. program.

The word innovation is widely referred to in business circles as the next level of competitive advantage. This course sets out to answer three basic questions as it concerns the management of innovation in organizations. These questions include: What is innovation? Why is innovation important in contributing to organizational performance? How can it best be sustained/implemented in organizations?

This course will be offered May 1 – 6, 2016 and will involve travel to Vancouver and Seattle. These destinations will facilitate site visits of some of the most innovative green companies in North America. The trip will also include a visit to Boeing’s Everett factory, located just outside of Seattle, to see the 747, 767, 777 and new 787 Dreamliner aircraft production lines.

The cost for this program will be $1,700 (including tuition, airfare, hotel, course-relation excursion fees and registration/non-refundable deposit). Please note that meals will not be provided as part of this trip. Students should plan to cover these expenses on their own (approximately $200 for the week).

Students will need to submit an application form and a statement of interest to Marc Usunier at: [email protected] or in person in Edwards Room 41 by February 22, 2016 and undergo an interview/selection process for admittance into this course.

COMM 486.3: Case Analysis and Presentation Skills (JDC West)

COMM 486.3 will be offered every second year, giving students an opportunity to complete the class in either their third or fourth year of study. This class will be offered again in the 2017-18 academic year.

  • EDWARDS CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM The Edwards Co-operative Education option allows a student to integrate classroom instruction with real life paid work situations in the middle of their third year of study. This will extend the completion of the student’s degree to four and a half years. Students will be required to complete COMM 380.0 and COMM 480.0 in January and May of their third year of study with one or two separate employers.

Students apply to the Edwards Co-operative Education option through Edwards Career Services in January of their second year. Once admitted, the student must complete a minimum of 9 credit units towards their designated major prior to starting their first co-op work term the following January.

Co-op students will be monitored on their work terms and will complete Work Term Reports graded as Pass/Fail on their transcripts. More information can be found at: http://www.edwards.usask.ca/careers/Business-Co-operative-Education-Program

NOTE: Admission to the Edwards Co-operative Education Option does not guarantee a work placement Students must complete mandatory co-op workshops prior to securing a placement Students will be given permission to register for COMM 380.0 and subsequently COMM 480.0

BUSINESS/LAW PROGRAM The B.Comm./JD (Juris Doctor) program allows a student to obtain both the Bachelor of Commerce and Law degrees in six years rather than the seven years needed to complete the degrees separately. Students should meet with an undergraduate programs advisor to discuss the exempted courses for their program.

A student initially applies to the Edwards School of Business and spends three years completing the core and major classes within the B.Comm. program. Students must complete at least 90 credits as a student in the B.Comm. program. All students in this program must still complete 12 credits of Social Sciences/Humanities within the 100 level non-Commerce elective requirements.

Students apply to the College of Law in their third year of the B.Comm. program. Once a student is admitted to Law, they complete the regular three year program. A student would obtain their B.Comm. degree after successful completion of two years in Law.

Following the three year program plan does not guarantee entrance into Law, as the College of Lawhas high admission standards

If a student is not admitted to Law, they spend their fourth year in the B.Comm. program andgraduate with a B.Comm. degree

Students intending to complete this program would not take the Business Law classes COMM 304.3and COMM 404.3

  • HONOURS PROGRAM The School offers the Honours program to provide students of proven academic ability the opportunity to execute and analyze advanced research in their area of concentration. To be admitted to the Honours Program, a student must successfully complete 90 credit units, and have a cumulative average and weighted average of 70% in the courses in the Honours field (including the core course). The Honours class is taken as part of the free senior elective area and is not part of the major requirements.

The Honours program consists of a 6 credit unit independent research project completed in consultation with a faculty member. Most students who meet the average requirements are admitted to the program if a faculty advisor is available.

Students entering their final year of the B.Comm. program can apply prior to April 30th, 2016. The application form is available at the Edwards Student & Faculty Services Office in Room 185 ESB. Students will be notified by letter in May of their acceptance into the program. Those interested in pursuing the program should talk to potential supervisors prior to applying to the program.

STUDY ABROAD OPTION Students in the Edwards School of Business have an opportunity to pursue studies around the world. Taking university classes in another country will broaden your horizons, enrich your university experience and open your employment opportunities globally.

Edwards School of Business has study agreements with a number of universities (i.e. in Austria, Australia, France, Mexico, Sweden, Thailand, USA) where you can study a pre-approved set of classes and credit will transfer back to the B.Comm. degree program. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, speak with an undergraduate programs advisor in the Edwards Student & Faculty Services Office or check out http://students.usask.ca/goabroad/.

GLOBAL BUSINESS STREAM & ADVANCED GLOBAL BUSINESS STREAM Completing the Global Business Stream (GBS) or the Advanced Global Business Stream (AGBS) provides Edwards students the skills to be able to offer superior value to companies and to have greater readiness to launch a business.

The GBS can be completed by taking three Edwards courses (COMM 340 and two others from a palette of four options) and attending three Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) “Going Global Workshops”, taught by globally trained experts.

The AGBS is an additional step up in your global preparedness. To complete this stream, students complete the requirements for the GBS and then choose from a palette of four options to earn the AGBS. The options range from attending additional FITT Workshops, to taking additional approved courses, to taking an approved international study tour, to custom options.

For more information on the GBS and AGBS please speak with an undergraduate programs advisor.
