HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT CASTERSBall Bearings are used where maximum rollability is required. This type

should be used for loads from 400 to 1,200 pounds. Because of the ball contact area, ball bearings are the least frictional type available in caster wheels.

Roller Bearings are used when greater load capabilities and rollability are required. Hardened rollers revolving around a hardened spanner bushing distribute the heavier load over a larger area.

Delrin Bearings are an impregnated Dupont plastic product that performs efficiently in a wide temperature range. They are durable, corrosion resistant, and require minimum lubrication even in steam cleaning or where water or other liquids are present.

OPERATING ENVIRONMENT AND WHEEL MATERIAL

Work conditions must be carefully evaluated before selecting wheel material (see WHEEL APPLICATION GUIDE on page 5). The presence of acids, oils, or corrosive chemicals requires wheels made of polyurethane, phenolic, polyolefin, or steel. Never use rubber in any corrosive environment. Extreme temperatures require spe-cial bearing lubricants, available from Jarvis.

CASTER CLASSIFICATIONS

For the heaviest loads in material handling and industrial applications, select drop forged casters with double ball bearing nut and bolt kingpin construction. For facto-ry, warehouse, and large retail operations, select heavy duty cold forged casters. For handpushed material handling equipment, select standard heavy duty casters. Always make certain to choose casters within the manufacturer's load capacity specifications. For most institutional applications, select medium or light-medium duty casters.

FLOOR CONDITIONS

As a general rule, hard treads perform better on soft or smooth floors, and soft treads roll better on hard or rough floors, including most outdoor surfaces. When choosing a wheel, take into consideration all special floor features -- tracks, gutters, grates, sills, or dock plates. The larger and softer the wheel, the greater the ability to roll over rails and similar obstacles. To protect floors from damage, choose softer materials. Rubber, especially high modulus rubber, will give quietest movement and maximum floor protection, while steel is hardest on floors. Polyurethane is fre-quently an effective compromise, giving moderate floor protection with greater load capacity.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

There are many conditions that may require selection of casters with special fea-tures. Consult a safety engineer to determine whether any specific conditions exist that would require selection of special features for safety. Listed below are a few conditions which may require special features:• In hospitals or other facilities where cart washings are required, select nickel-

plated casters with grease seals and zerk fittings. For very frequent washings or wet environments, select stainless steel casters.

• In textile plants, to avoid collection of thread or string in casters, select casters with thread guards.

• In manufacturing facilities or other areas where dirt, grease, liquids, solvents, or sprays are used, select medium- or heavy-duty industrial grease-sealed casters.

• For small, low equipment, such as office machines, select very wide, small diam-eter wheels from our business machine section.

• For medical equipment, such as case carts or instrument carts that require swivel locks or positive brake swivel locks, select our 50/50H health care series casters.

Casters and wheels are offered in many sizes and types. Although there is no simple formula to follow in choosing the proper caster or wheel, the WHEEL APPLICATION GUIDE on page 5 and the information provided with each caster series will help you select the right casters and wheels for your application.

To get the best performance from your casters and wheels:• determine the requirements for your industry or market• consult OSHA requirements and your engineering department to determine the

specific type of caster needed• fully understand how the casters and wheels will be used, and select the proper

combination for your application• regularly inspect your casters• properly maintain your castersThe information below and on the following page is intended as a guide to assist you in specifying, operating, and maintaining casters for safety and maximum life. Please read this information carefully.

LOAD WEIGHT AND WHEEL SIZEThe first consideration of caster selection is to determine the combined weight of equipment and maximum load. Generally, the greater the combined weight, the larger the wheel must be. Larger wheels distrib-ute weight and roll more easily. To determine the load capacity for

each wheel, divide the combined weight of equipment and maximum load by the number of casters to be used. This is the weight that each caster and wheel must support. Even though Jarvis' load ratings include a safety factor, always select a cast-er and wheel that are rated for a capacity greater than the calculated load per caster. It is important to select casters with extra load capacity to allow for unusual circum-stances. There may be other considerations which affect the size of thewheel you should select. Some of these are: floor condition, environment (wet, oily, corrosive, etc.), braking needs, appearance, and quiet ride. Your industry consultant or engineering department should determine whether there are specific regulations or other factors to consider. Unless there are other considerations, follow these gen-eral sizing guidelines for wheel diameter:• for short travel in confined areas with hand-pushed equipment: 3-4" diameter• for longer travel with hand-pushed equipment: 5-6-8" diameter• for conveyor-towed trucks, at speeds up to 3 mph: 6-8" diameter with nut and

bolt kingpin• for tractor-towed equipment used outdoors: 10" minimum - contact the factory

with your specifications

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Selecting the correct caster for your application is very important. If you do not select the correct caster, you or the users of your equipment could be injured. If you are not absolutely sure which caster is the correct one for your use, contact a safety or engineering consultant who knows your equipment and its intended use to assist you.

WHEEL BEARINGSThere are various types of wheel bearings available. Have your consultant or engineer determine which bearing type is appropriate for your specific application. The follow-ing is some basic information about each type of wheel bearing.Self-lube Sintered Iron is an economical oil-impregnated bearing suited for light loads, or heavier loads that are stationary most of the time. liquids, solvents, or sprays are used, select medium- or heavy-duty industrial grease-sealed casters.


SAFETY AND MAINTENANCE TIPSBadly worn or "chunked out" rubber tires can also cause erratic steering, bumping, load shifting, and floor damage. Replacement wheels and bearings should be kept on hand to reduce costly downtime.After wheels have been inspected and repaired, be sure the axle nut is properly tightened. Use lockwashers or locknuts on all axles. If the caster axle is loose, tight-en immediately. The wheel may be damaged or lock up if it is cocked in the caster horn.CASTERS

Check the swivel assembly to see if there is excessive play due to wear. If the swivel assembly is loose, it is advisable to replace it (fork or rig) or the entire caster. If the caster has a king bolt and nut, make sure it is fastened securely. If the swivel does not turn freely, check for corrosion or dirt binding the raceways. Again, it may be necessary to replace the

swivel assembly or the entire caster.If the equipment has rigid or stationary casters at one end, make sure that the cast-er horns are not bent or distorted.BRAKESCheck brakes and locks for proper operation. It is recommended that scaffold caster

brakes be tested daily or before each use of the equipment. Apply brakes one at a time and attempt to move the equipment to make sure that each brake is not slipping or loose. If brakes slip due to worn or damaged wheels, replace the wheels immediately, and re-test the brakes. If the brake mechanism itself is not operating properly, repair

or replace it.Always re-test brakes immediately after repairs or replacement,before returning equipment to use.Caster Industries, Inc. offers a wide selection of brakes and locks. Contact the factory for further information.TOWING - POWER OPERATIONPower driven equipment, whether it is by a tow line, tractor drawn, or mechanically moved by conveyor, will require casters specifically designed for this use. Series

which are compatible with this type of operation are so specified with-in this catalog, but consultation with the factory is recommended to ensure the proper caster for each specific towing or power driven equipment application.

THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP IS PROPER MAINTENANCE ITSELFUsers are responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the manual material handling equipment they use. Some equipment will quickly become dam-aged and unsafe if abused or subjected to improper demands. If equipment is regu-larly maintained and not abused, you will get the maximum safety and service per-formance from your casters.• Do not overload equipment• Do not drop heavy loads on carts or trucks• Do not use at high speedsThese uses create severe impact and shock loads that may lead to wheel and equip-ment failure.

FRAMES AND FASTENERSPeriodically turn the equipment on its end or side and check the follow-ing:• Look for broken welds or deck boards.• Tighten loose bolts and nuts.

• Look for frame distortion caused by overloads and impact loads. Distorted frames can lead to wheel failure by placing disproportionate loads on one or two casters.

• If casters are stem types (bolted or riveted in place), make certain that the legs of the equipment are not bent, and that mounting bolts are securely fastened.

• Always use locknuts or lockwashers in mounting casters.• Be sure casters with expanding applicators in tubular equipment are held firmly

in place.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

If you are using casters as a component part on equipment for resale, you must advise and pass this information along to those who purchase the equipment. You should place the proper instructions on your product to relay this information to the user.

LUBRICATIONLubrication is essential. The lubrication schedule depends on your spe-cific application. Normal conditions may warrant lubrication every six months, but monthly lubrication may be necessary for applications in wet or corrosive environments. Lubrication may be required after each

cart washing. Special high temperature, waterresistant lubricants must be used for these applications. can provide stainless steel casters that require less maintenance in frequent cart-washing applications. Regular lubrication adds to the life of wheel and swivel bearings. A little lube spill-over to friction points on the wheel hub, thrust washer, and leg surface of straight roller bearing systems reduces drag and improves rollability.

WHEELSCheck wheels for visible tread wear. Flat spots may indicate accumula-tion of foreign material, such as string or thread, which can cause the wheel to bind. Remove the axle bolt and nut. Clean out foreign material and check internal components for wear or failure. Re-assemble if the

parts are not damaged. Thread guards may be installed to delay build-up if foreign material is a continuing problem.Loose casters and frozen wheels can also cause flat spots. Proper maintenance, espe-cially tightening of bolts, proper lubrication, and replacement of damaged casters will enhance equipment rollability and tracking performance.

S71-S72 SERIES STAINLESS STEEL PLATE CASTERS - HEAVY DUTY

Heavy duty stainless steel plate casters are available in 5", 6" and 8" diameters. All metal parts are stainless steel, making this caster highly resistant to conditions that can promote corrosion. Completely stainless wheel brakes and swivel lock options are available. Stainless steel casters are designed to stop rusting and corrosion in wet and damp conditions, or in other corrosive environments. These casters lend themselves to use in applications such as food, diary, meat packing plants, pharmaceutical houses and hospitals. Stainless steel is impervious to repeated washings, thereby reducing maintenance and providing long life to caster and equipment.

50-51 SERIES BRAKE LOCK AND SWIVEL LOCK CASTERSMedium-Duty swivel casters with or without directional locks and total locks for food service, health care and hospital equipment, utility carts, and portable equipment.
