This is a truly international event, with 85 percent of the exhibitors coming from outside the host country. Innovations@DOMOTEX – an effective showcase for product innovations and trends

Industrial designer Stefan Diez is chairing the jury for the second time at Innovations@DOMOTEX. Diez explained the Innovations@DOMOTEX concept as follows: “We asked ourselves what the term innovation really means today. Obviously it means something new but this could be a decisive improvement to a particular detail or a practical solution or idea. As a designer I am aware of the important role played by artisans and the skilled trades, especially in the treatment, installation and laying of floor coverings. Essentially it comes down to the interaction of design and practical applications.”

Innovations@DOMOTEX, which was premiered at DOMOTEX 2014, proved so successful that it will be repeated and is expected to be an absolute hit.

Jury of professionals picks the best DOMOTEX innovationsExhibitors have the opportunity to pro-mote their product innovations here. In early November a high-calibre jury comprising ten independent experts chaired by the industrial designer Ste-fan Diez met to select the best entries.

This selection is based on a clear list of criteria and product-related catego-ries such as “Materials”, “Laying tech-niques”, “Sustainability” and “Design”. Attention is paid to a number of con-siderations such as the following: Have special and entirely new materials or combinations of materials been used? Has the use of specific materials given the flooring product any new proper-ties or qualities which it had hitherto not possessed? To what extent does the product cater for specific ecological aspects? At the start of the selection process, sub-groups for each product category meet to pick 20 to 30 inno-vations, which are then presented to the full panel. The jury then selects the

finalists from this preliminary selec-tion. In 2015 Innovations@DOMOTEX will embrace the product categories “Textile and resilient floor coverings” (Hall 6), “Parquet and laminates” (Hall 9) as well as “Modern handmade car-pets” (Hall 17) and – for the first time – the category “Laying skills, cleaning and application technologies” (Hall 8).

Three areas dedicated to top innovationsThe innovations chosen by the jury will be stylishly exhibited on three special display areas during DOMOTEX.

A concept that impresses visitors:The original concept received an excellent response from trade visitors when it was launched in 2014. Christy Köhler, Lincona Konsult, Tallinn, Estonia: “We are whole-salers and come to the trade fair specifically to meet our business partners, as well as our compet-itors. We also want to see the best innovative products of the year. The focus on these innova-tions serves as a common theme throughout the entire event.”

“Innovations@DOMOTEX Talks” will fea-ture internationally acclaimed architects, interior designers, planners and de-signers such as Stefan Diez, Roberto Palomba and Ross Lovegrove, who will deliver keynote speeches on future trends and the implications for their field of activity, including the increasing importance attached to floor coverings as a key element in the creation of living and working environments.

Roberto Palomba (Milan): “Architecture is a three-dimensional box and we stand on the floor of that box. In this sense the floor is

the foundation of the box. In the past floors were decorated with precious and ornate carpets – for example, Persian

carpets – in order to draw attention to this area. Compared with earlier times there is no dominant style today. Every form and style of interior design has a flooring equivalent. In future we will have boxes with floors, walls and ceilings which have the same surface finish. Then we will have materials that can be used over 360°.”

Ross Lovegrove (London): “The floor extends the room, it affords acoustic insulation, makes the room seem softer and makes a striking visual impression due to the large canvas that it provides the designer. I am convinced that a rethinking of flooring design and the advent of new composite materials will mark a revolution in flooring design.”

New: selected innovations in applications and laying techniques

In 2015 the Carpet Design Awards will be presented at Innovations@DOMOTEX. A jury of experts from the international carpet trade and design elite will select the winning products. They represent lovers of first-class design and idiosyncratic, personalized interior design. In this context there is nothing better than a handmade carpet in terms of qual-ity. However its country of origin and how it is made are properties that ensure it has a rightful place even in the most modern setting.

Referring to trends and this desire for individual style, jury member Ross Urwin, Hong Kong Infrastructure Crea-

tive Agency, says: “Consumers are becoming increasingly keen to own something special to adorn their

Another jury mem-ber, author and design journalist Linda O‘Keeffe from New York, refers to the part played by floor coverings in achieving an over-all architectural effect: “Although carpets cover only one surface in a room, they introduce form and character. A handmade carpet is an investment in the future. In a world of mass-produced goods we cherish everything that is unique and if it is handmade we value it all the more – like a treasure that a machine can never replicate.”
