2. Please update all phone numbers and emergency contacts for our records.

3. Please DO NOT send your child(ren) to school sick. Students with diarrhea, fever, throw up, fractions, serious

head injuries, pink eye, unexplainable rashes, hacking coughs, and green and yellow mucus, are an automatic send home once they come to the Health Room

4. You can still order our new He’eia tshirt uniforms. There are order forms in the office or you may order online.

5. School gets out on Mon-Fri at 2:05 pm, with the exception of Wednesday when school gets out at 1:20 pm.

Our focus this year is on problem solving. The math department has implemented a Math Club for grades 2 – 6. Throughout the day, the math team pulls out small groups of 2 – 5 students to work on problem solving strategies and number sense.

Weekly Speed Drills for grades 1- 6 – See how quickly you can earn your Fluency Certificate. So far this year, the following students have received their Fluency Certificate: Grade 1: Chloe K., Beauchamp L., Braden D., Amaya B., Zeph M., Christian M., Shaylie H., Taimane F., Gabrielle L., Alexandria K. Grade 2: Kobe C-B., Brody D., Leila D., Lawena K., Keira T., Chlairyn O., Alana A., Addison A., Lilyanne O., Dylan M., Dezmend L., Mark K., Emmalynn L., Jayda L.W., Jasity M., Jesstin W., Maia S. Grade 3: Cole K., Nainoa B.Grade 4: Paiea M., Catherine D., Sienna D., Connor K. Grade 5: Tanaya T., Donovan C., Hezra C., Jesse R., Kalcie-Ann C. Everyone in the school has been granted access to IXL. It is a standards-aligned online program offering unlimited practice in thousands of math skills. Your child(ren) should have already received their username and password. Please have them practice for 5 – 10 minutes a day after their homework is completed. It is critical for them to read the entire explanation when they get a problem incorrect. It teaches them how to do the problem correctly which drastically minimizes future errors on similar problems. Another great feature about IXL is that the students can choose which grade level to work on. For example, a fifth grader who wants to practice multiplication can select grade 3 to find multiplication practice. Log on to www.ixl.com/signin/castlekahuku A website with Interactive Math games: http://www.oswego.org Click on Resources and then on Interactive Games Otter Pops: Otter Pops are sold afterschool on the last school day of the week (usually Fridays) behind the library. They are sold for $.25 each. Otter Pops are made from real fruit juice concentrate and each pop has 6g of sugar. Please do not send your child with more than $2.00 (Yes, we accept coins). To avoid conflict, students are not allowed to purchase for others or “borrow” money from anyone. Otter Pop funds have been used for the purchase of PE equipment, recess equipment, math manipulatives and supplies for classrooms, Electronic Number Bond games for fact fluency practice, HSSG t-shirts, and Leadership Camp. Thank you for your support! Please contact Mrs. Kashimoto, Math Curriculum Coordinator, if you need assistance. My email is [email protected]

A NOTE OF THANKS

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

During this month of November, there is much to be thankful and grateful

for. One of the things that we are MOST grateful and thankful for, are our families here at He’eia. We have been so blessed to receive so much because of your hearts in wanting to give and help others. We value all our families and want you to know how you touch our hearts and lives everyday, by your thoughtfulness, generosity, kindness and help. Many of you have given generously of your finances, time, and resources and have helped in volunteering in classes, events, projects and wherever help was needed. We hope you will always know how much we APPRECIATE YOU ALL and want to say MAHALO..MAHALO..MAHALO FOR EVERYTHING! We wanted to take this time to acknowledge and say THANK YOU and give a big SHOUT OUT to our HE’EIA OHANA! Also, please help us in recognizing the following families and people. Please forgive me if I may have forgotten you, but do know from the bottom of our hearts and in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we THANK & APPRECIATE YOU ALL! MAHALO!

DIRECTIONS FOR AFTERSCHOOL PICK UP IN CIRCLE

Our goal is to not only keep traffic flowing in and out of the circle onto the main road, but to also minimize traffic both in the circle and on the main road. PLEASE be mindful and aware of our traffic flow

If you’re using the circle for pick up, please make sure that you’re following procedures for the SAFETY of your child(ren). If you’re not willing or able to follow procedures, PLEASE PARK ON THE ROAD and pick up your children from class

PLEASE drive to the FARTHEST POINT in the circle. DO NOT hold up or slow the flow of traffic

DO NOT leave car UNATTENDED OR PARK in the circle. Please stay in the car to allow the flow of the circle to go smoothly. If not, please park on the main road

Move your car accordingly to close the gap, as cars go out of the circle…this helps to lessen the traffic in the circle and on the main road.

While in the circle, please DO NOT park too close to the car in front of you. This allows you to drive out of that lane as soon as your child gets in the car or you will be stuck

As always, PLEASE WATCH Ms. Tee/Mr. Sega and any of our Staff that are overseeing the circle, as they flag you down for your kids. DO NOT move your car unless you are indicated to do so

DO NOT signal for your children to come between cars…For the sake of safety, please drive up to Ms. Tee/Mr. Sega/Staff in the outer lane of the circle, for us to be able to place your children safely in your cars

Once the JPOs’ shift has ended and they leave the circle, please feel free to drop off, wait and or park in the circle or bus terminal

Please DO NOT SPEED in the circle for the SAFETY of ALL of our children & families

NO LEFT TURNS from the circle entrance from 7:30-8:00 am and in the afternoons daily.

Remember to let them conduct the experiment and collect the data themselves. During the month of December, we will be working on completing rest of their project -- experiments must be done prior to December. **Flyers will be sent home with more detailed information.

CPAC SPRING PRODUCTION PARTICIPANTS Congratulations to the following that have been chosen to represent our He’eia 5

th graders in the Castle Performing Arts Center Spring production of “Thoroughly

Modern Millie Jr.” – Emali Malohi and Tanaya Tafa! We are excited to see them perform in February.

SPIRIT DAY WOOHOO! Congratulations to our 5

th graders for having the most spirit on Pink

Day! That’s our second win, bringing us one step closer to the championship! Our next spirit day will be Pajama Day on Wednesday, November 25. To help us get ready for the long 4-day weekend, wear your comfy pajamas to school (be sure to follow our dress code). Thank you Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Goo and Mrs. Wilson

Grade 4

During the week of November 16, fourth graders will participate in the bicycle education program provided free of charge by the Honolulu Bicycling League. Students will learn important safety tips and practice their riding skills. More info can be found at www.HBL.org. On October 20th, we participated in a program called Junior Judges. It was presented by a lawyer named Gary Kam. He shared a video with us about situations that may arise. The topics were stealing, cheating, bullying, vandalism, and teasing. After each video we had a discussion on ways that we can handle these situations in our own lives. It was very enlightening, and we thank Mr. Kam for coming and talking with us. Mahalo to the Portillo, Tynanes, and Nomura families for their continued donations to our students and classrooms. Thank you for your kokua Mrs. Taba, Mrs. Galindo, and Mrs. Tanaka

Grade 1 Our first graders have accomplished a lot during the first

quarter and look forward to another quarter filled with learning new concepts and fun activities. It seems as though the days just whizzed by!

We enjoyed our visit to Waimanalo Country Farms on October 27

th. The day was “just right” – no hot sun beating down on us,

just a slight breeze and a bit overcast. We had a lot of fun going through the sunflower maze! Luckily, we did not lose any of our children. It was a close call for two of our parents, though! Everyone enjoyed the animals and the tractor ride. There were pumpkins for each of the children to take home at the end of our visit.

Another recent highlight of our school days has been the chance to meet with our parents at the Parent-Teacher conferences. We were able to discuss our students’ progress and establish good working relationships to foster further success this school year.

We are so grateful for the support we received at the “Taste of He’eia” event of the 30

th of October. The delicious fried rice

provided by Sophia Kiyabu’s family (Planet Pho restaurant in Kailua) was “out of this world!”, “Yum!” A big heart-filled “Thank you” to all the families who generously donated to our first graders.

We look forward to more growth and learning in the first grade. We have many things to be grateful for this month. Mrs. Upton and Mrs. Kaio

Grade 2 Taste of He’eia: BIG MAHALO to all our parents who donated food for our hot dog and chips booth. We would also like to thank those individuals who purchased hot dog and chips from us. The proceeds will be used to purchase necessary supplies for our students. Language Arts: The writing traits we are working on are: ideas, word choice, and organization. We will also learn about the different kinds of nouns, such as: singular, plural, common, proper, and possessive. Learning their vocabulary, high frequency words and spelling words will help build fluency and comprehension. Math: We are currently working on measuring lengths using inches and feet. In Module 4 we will be taking a look at subtracting on a number chart and number line and revisit fact families. Congratulation goes out to the following students who have completed their speed drill facts progression and are masters at adding and subtracting within 20: Alana Andrade, Addison Aquino, Kobe Compoc-Bruhn, Brody Driscoll, Leila Dunn, Lawena Kalehuawehe, Dexmend Loando, Dylan Machado, Chlairyn Okuno, Lilyanne Oldham, and Keira Torres. Social Studies: We are working on conducting research for our animal habitats projects. We are learning to use thinking maps to take notes as we search for information about our habitat using Google and other sources on the internet. Grade 2 Teachers
