Staffing Changes for Term 2
There are some changes to our staffing for Term 2.
Mr Soumalias is taking leave for the term. As a result Ms Snow
is replacing Mr Soumalias as an Assistant Principal and Ms Vida
will become the Head of Maths. Mr Danny Gervezian is
coming in for Term 2 to fill the gap in this area. His references
are excellent.
Due to the illness of one of our Maths teachers we have also
had to employ another maths teacher to fill this gap: Ms Erin
Mahar. Erin is a Canadian Teacher with experience in
Canada.
Ms Chelsea Giannino will be working in the Phys ED KLA for the
remainder of the year.

Open Day and Evening 2015
The College will conduct its annual Open Day on
Tuesday 28th April. This will be a pupil free day for all
Rosehill students. Primary school students from the
area will be in attendance and taking part in classes
conducted by our teachers.
Open Evening for this year will be Thursday 30th April.
All students will be dismissed from school at 1.15pm
allowing teachers time to prepare for the evening.
Many students however will be involved in the
evening, either as guides, assisting with
demonstrations, experiments, providing music and
classroom activities. The Open Evening will begin at
4pm and Mr Rouse will address parents in the
College Library at 6pm. There will be tours offered
from the Library every half hour until 7pm.
These days are very important for the College and
we appreciate the time students give in assisting
teachers to make these days successful.

Year 7 Achievement Awards
As year level coordinator, I receive data that informs
me about which students have achieved
outstanding results on their interim reports. The
students pictured all received outstanding reports
and have been recognised by their teachers as
displaying the school values of Respect, Initiative
and Learning in the classroom. Congratulations to
these students on displaying such positive behaviours
in their first term of secondary school.

Japan City Tour In Melbourne 2015
On Sunday 8th March, our Year 10 students studying
Japanese participated in a Japanese City Tour. We
visited the National Gallery of Victoria to see the
Pauline Gandel Gallery of Japanese Art. After the
exhibition, we went to Federation Square to
participate in the Melbourne Japanese Summer
Festival 2015. We saw drumming and Japanese
dance performances. Some students enjoyed
eating Japanese sweets and food.

Pi Day 2015
The Maths Department ran a Pi Day Competition at
lunchtime on Friday 13th March. Students were
required to recall from memory the first 30 digits of Pi:
3.14159265358979323846264338327 to win a meat pie
or muffin. Our overall champion was Hayden Ho (8G)
who recalled 113 digits!! Second place went to his
brother Lachlan Ho (7E) with 81 digits and third place
went to Jack Macumber (11F) with 62 digits. In total,
there were 34 students who were able to recall over
30 digits of Pi which was a fantastic result and we
look forward to running the competition next year!

Year 7 Boys Cricket
The Year 7 Boys cricket team travelled to Fairburn
Park on Wednesday 11th March to play in the
interschool sports. The boys made a strong start with
the ball against Buckley Park SC, dismissing 7 of their
batsman in 13 overs. An outstanding spell was
delivered by Kye Attard who finished with figures of 3
wickets for 4 runs. Unfortunately the boys struggled
with the bat and fell short of the total set by Buckley
Park SC.
The second game was against Essendon Keilor
College and after winning the toss the team elected
to bat first. The opening pair of Michael Jones and
Nathan Johnson made a promising start, with both
boys retiring. The team finished on 65 runs from 12
overs. During the second innings the game began to
slip away from the Rosehill SC side as the sundries
started to accumulate. The boys eventually lost by
only 5 runs.
A big thank you must go to Lucus Watson for assisting
with scoring, umpiring and coaching on the day.
Year 7 Boys & Girls Volleyball
On Monday 16th March the Year 7 boys and girls
volleyball teams competed at the Whitten
Community Sports Stadium. The teams made short
work of the opposition with both teams winning their
games in straight sets.
All students were very well behaved and showed
excellent sportsmanship throughout the event. The
teams will progress through to regionals towards the
end of semester 2.
Thank you to Brittany Bonner who showed excellent
initiative and respect as a student helper.

Introduction of a New School Policy
Non-attendance at the Swimming and/or Athletics
Sports results in not being eligible to represent the
College in any Interschool sport or be eligible to
apply for a Student Leadership Position for the
remainder of the year.
We are aiming to have every students attend the
Athletics Carnival this year. There will be a range of
activities in which students can participate. This may
include; face painting, jumping castle, music
performances, dance competitions, and novelty
events.
Please ensure that you attend as this is a compulsory
whole school event. Also this will enable you to
represent the College in other sports during the year
as well as be eligible to apply for a student
leadership position.
If you are not able to attend due to illness or injury
you will require a medical certificate, a parent note
will not be enough.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing everyone
in their house colours on the day.

VCAL Startsmart Incursion
In the last few weeks the VCAL Year 11 students
participated in a number of workshops held by
Jaime Robertson from the Commonwealth Bank.
These workshops focused on a number of different
financial topics including earning, saving, spending,
investing and enterprise.
Jaime delivered the content in an enthusiastic and
easy to understand manner. His examples were
based on real life scenarios and his personal
experience, thus making the workshops both
engaging and relevant for the students. Targeting
common financial issues faced by young people,
the workshops covered topics ranging from getting
your first job and managing your mobile phone to
basic investment principles, setting savings goals and
budgeting.
Hopefully students have been inspired to make
responsible and discerning personal financial
decisions.

White Card Training
Wednesday 6th May
An email was sent to all parents of students who
indicated they are doing work experience in the
building and allied industries, who need to do white
card training. The cost is $60 and the money was due
before the end of Term 1. If you have not yet paid,
this must be done on the first day back from holidays.
Ms Young must confirm the numbers with the
provider of the program.
STUDENTS WORKING IN THE BUILDING AND ALLIED
INDUSTRIES MUST DO THIS TRAINING.
Year 10 ID ‘Fight For Your Right’ 2015 EXPO
As part of the Term 1 Year 10 Interdisciplinary Studies
program, students participate in Civics and
Citizenship Unit. In this unit students explore social
issues of importance and then advocate and
promote them at the ‘Fight for your Right’ EXPO.
The EXPO this year has been a real success. In this
program students build understanding of positive
social relationships and become linked to society by
developing a sense of belonging. They learned how
local and global values and beliefs determine their
own and others’ social relationships. Each class
voted for a current social issue or injustice and then
campaigned and advocated for a not-for-profit
organisation promoting the cause to the wider
school community. Some of the causes which were
supported this year are; The Lost Dogs Home,
Thankyou Water and the Rainbow Network.
This was an opportunity for students to experience
preferential voting and discover their right to be
heard. While there was a range of important issues
that our students are concerned about, one class
won the year level vote, promoting the Cancer
Counsel charity. 10D will work with student leadership
to further support the cause and seek to run a ‘Moon
Light Cinema’ fundraiser in Term 2.
A Special thanks to East Keilor Woolworths and Auto
Trac for supporting our students with sponsorship for
the event.

Work Experience
Year 10 Work Experience
Monday 15th June to Friday 26th June 2015
Thank you to all those students who have submitted
their work experience forms. The holidays are the
perfect time for students who have not finalised
placements to visit employers to collect forms and, if
you have not found work experience yet to visit
prospective employers to enquire about work
experience.
It is often better to actually visit organisations, as just
emailing will not always get a response. This way the
prospective employer has the opportunity to meet
you at that time and may be more willing to offer
you a placement. The best options at this late stage
are in the retail and hospitality industries or through
friends and family. Please return all forms by Friday
24th April.
Year 10 students will begin occupational health and
safety training in the week commencing Monday
27th April 2015.
Ms Young is currently following up with all students
who have indicated they do not have a placement
as yet.
RSC Monday Tuition 2015
Students, parents and teachers are all welcome to
attend and participate in the Tuition
Program that is now available in the
College Library every Monday
afternoon from 3.30pm – 4.30pm.
This enhancement and
enrichment program has
proven to be very successful in
assisting students in completing
their homework, classwork and
assignments. The improvement of
literacy and numeracy skills has
been an important priority for students
attending, as well as the development of their study
techniques in preparation for class tests and exams.
Teachers from all key learning areas will be available
to cater to students’ needs on a weekly basis. This
program is easily accessible to students, is cost free
and is effective in improving study skills, results and
the confidence in students to work independently.
For further information regarding the Tuition Program,
please contact Ms De Goederen on 9337 2488.

Fabulous 2015 Rosefest
As the sun rose over the Rosehill
portable area on Wednesday 18th
March, the deliveries for Rosefest
began arriving. Trailers pulled up to
the school delivering an amazing
array of equipment and supplies. The slushy
machines, hotdog warmers and a dunk bucket,
just to name a few, began to transform the area
from a schoolyard to something approaching a
carnival ground.
The bell for Period 3 rang and the Year 9 students
gathered for a final briefing prior to setting up their
stalls. There was a feeling of excitement in the air
as students worked together to collect tables,
hang signs, set up stalls and began cooking their
food, ready to sell to the hordes of students and
staff.
Within seconds of the lunchtime bell sounding, the
portable area was packed full of students. Mr
Hosking and Mr Blicavs led the way, bravely
plunging into the ‘Doughnut Dilemma’ activity.
With hands behind their backs, they raced to eat
a donut temptingly dangling from a string. Mr
Martens took his place under the dunk bucket,
ready to be drenched by the students throwing
tennis balls at the target. Mrs Anic donned her
plastic poncho ready to be creamed in the face.
It was a great day for students and their teachers
joining in the funfest.
As 1000 students poured into the portable area
the excitement was palpable. The Year 9 students
leapt into action, serving customers and working
together to ensure their stalls were successful. They
provided the rest of the school with a wonderful
example of what student-lead cooperation can
achieve.
With all students across the school in casual
clothes for the day, there was a great carnival

vibe with students from Year 7 to 12 coming down
and getting involved in the Year 9 festivities.
Intensive preparations and a comprehensive
learning program underpinned the Rosefest
success. The enormous fun the students and staff
were clearly having was the product of 7 weeks of
preparatory work. All Year 9 ID classes worked
through the Contributing to the Community
Program, which developed in students, the
capacity to plan, organize and undertake this
challenging and exciting project-based learning
activity. Students brainstormed ideas, gained
sponsorship from local businesses, planned their
Rosefest stalls and staffed all aspects of their
project. Adding to the exciting carnival
atmosphere was the Rosehill Music Department
and the amazing student performances we all
enjoyed throughout the afternoon.
This fantastic authentic learning experience saw
students working within teams to learn about their
community and contribute to a range of
charitable organizations like World Vision,
Children’s Tumour Foundation of Australia and the
East Keilor RSL that are responding to the problems
of human suffering and social inequity. Guest
speakers early in the term, expanded students’
understanding of each of these organisations and
how they work improve people’s lives.
The Year 9s did an amazing job on the day,
showing maturity, creativity, responsibility and
organisation in the running of their food and
activity stalls. Their financial contribution to each
of these worthy causes will ensure that Rosehill
students are making a difference to the lives of a
wide variety of people.
I’m sure that the Rosehill students want to
particularly thank the large staff team involved in
the planning and support of the students
throughout the day, the parents, siblings and
friends who came down and supported the
students.
A huge thank you also needs to be said to the
vast array of local businesses which contributed to
Rosefest. We hope that the school community will
be able to support these wonderful community-
minded businesses as much as they have
supported us.
