FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome to the first newsletter for Term 2. I am sure you will enjoy
reading the information in this edition as it shows the range of
activities taking place around the school: Rosefest, Athletics
Sports, Year 7 camp etc. It is an indication of the broad range of
events on offer for our students.
Enrolments for 2019
It feels strange to be talking about enrolments for next year
already, but parents of Grade 6 students in Government schools
need to make decisions about what school to select by 11th May.
We have been conducting tours every Tuesday morning and
there has been a lot of interest with some large groups of visitors
coming through. On Tuesday next week we are holding our
Open Day and we will be hosting around 900 students from
various primary schools on the day. Note that Rosehill students
are not expected at school on the day unless they are involved
in the activities. On the Thursday we will be holding our Open
Evening. Rosehill students will finish at 1pm so that teachers can
spend time setting up.
NAPLAN
During week five of this term the NAPLAN tests for Year 7 and 9
students will be held. These tests provide us with valuable
information about our students, especially growth rates between
Year 7 and 9. All students can be expected to progress at normal
rates in line with their age and the data we get tells us if this is the
case. More information will come out shortly about the tests,
including what to do if you wish to seek an exemption for your son
or daughter. Ms Snow is the organiser of the tests so please ring
and ask for her if you have any questions.
Self-Evaluation
As I have mentioned regularly, 2018 is the year of Self-Evaluation
and Strategic Plan writing. This occurs every four years. Our
formal evaluation will take place in Term 4 but we will be running
a mini-evaluation this term. We have already begun to plan for
this process and at some stage we may be running a forum for
parents. School Council members will also have some
involvement.
Anzac Day Ceremony
Last week a number of our Student Leaders attended an Anzac
Day service at the East Keilor RSL. We have a wonderful
relationship with the RSL and this has been the case for many
years now. This year we had asked our students to provide copies
of memorabilia in relation to any relatives they had who had
served with the armed forces and we were very pleased with the
interest. One of our students also had the opportunity to read a
poem that she had written.

Principals Report (Cont’d)
Ben Carroll
On Friday 27th April Ben Carroll, our local member and
Minister for Industry and Employment, will be visiting the
school during the afternoon. Ben has been lobbying
his fellow members for funding for Rosehill so we can
continue our capital works program. Ben had
promised some time ago to drop in so I am really
looking forward to catching up with him. 2018 is
turning out to be an interesting year in politics.
RAMP program
In this newsletter, you will notice a copy of an article
that was recently published in the Moonee Valley
Leader Newspaper. The article is about our RAMP
program which has been set up to cater for students
with high level mathematical ability. It involves around
36 students split into two classes of different ages and
prepares them early for Senior Maths. For example, we
now have five Year 9 students who have been in the
program for over a year and are completing Year 12
Further Maths this year. Mr Fotias is the teacher taking
the program and it is proving very successful.

Windows of Four Seasons
A Japanese origami artist, Mrs Hisako Kawaguchi, has
donated her work ‘Windows of Four Seasons’ to the
College. 26-miniature artwork represents seasonal
events in Japan. Her work will be exhibited in the
library.
VCAL BBQ on Athletics Day
Once again the VCAL Year 11 students with the help
of the following enthusiastic teachers: Alfio Raiti,
Leanne Mortellaro, and George Pavlidis, ran a very
successful fundraising BBQ on Athletics day.
The VCAL students, were continuously involved the
whole day in various tasks. This included loading Mr
Raiti’s trailer and teachers’ cars with food, drinks (and
of course the BBQ itself), cooking the meat, serving the
hungry crowd and finally packing up and cleaning of
the grounds at the end of the event!!
A special mention to our Parent helper, Mr Ahmet
Karabay who supplied us with Halal sausages and also
donated to our program, a brand new BBQ!

students to view.
Athletics Day
On Tuesday 20th March, Rosehill Secondary College
held its annual Athletics carnival at Aberfeldie athletics
track. Our school’s four house colours: Sapphire, Ruby,
Diamond and Emerald were proudly on display both
on the track and on the field.
The enthusiasm and participation from students and
staff was fantastic. There were highlights in all events
with huge throws and lightning speeds.
The staff race and tug of war also proved very popular
drawing big crowds.
Diamond reigned victorious and were the winners on
the day. A big thank you again to all staff for their
contribution in assisting with the event, it is greatly
appreciated. The students were fantastic all day and
should be congratulated on their participation.

Year 7 Camp
On 22nd March, 174 excited Year 7 students and 18
teachers attended a three day camp at Forrest Edge
Recreational camp in Neerim East.
The purpose of the camp was to assist with the
transition process from Primary School to Secondary
School. Students were able to further develop social
relationships and establish organisational skills. They
were also able develop a sense of belonging and
connectedness to their peers. More importantly, the
aim of the camp was to have fun. Students embraced
the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and
test their skills in an alternative learning setting.
Students participated in a range of recreational
activities such as raft-building, forest walks, mountain-
boarding, high ropes, flying fox, archery, frisbee-golf
and trampolining. In addition to the recreational
activities, students also participated in a reflection
session and they created a time capsule to be opened
at their Junior School graduation at the end of Year 9.
In the evenings, students enjoyed trivia, newspaper
dress-up activities, a crazy categories game, a talent
show and a disco. Without a doubt, the highlight of the
camp was witnessing some of our talented students
perform on stage. We had singing, dancing,
acrobatics, jokes and comedy sketches.
Congratulations to all participants.
A key part of the transition process came during the
reflection session when students discussed the school’s
values of Respect, Initiative and Learning. Possible
scenarios and dilemmas that students may face during
their time in high school were also discussed. It is
through sessions like this that we help to prepare our
students for the adolescent years ahead.
Over the course of the three days, teachers were on
the lookout for a Camp Champ. The Camp Champ
award is presented to a student that displays Respect,
Initiative and Learning at all times. In addition to the
Camp Champ award, we also presented 12 group
champ awards to a stand-out member from each
group. A big congratulations to the recipients of these
awards. They have been awarded with prizes and a
special presentation at assembly.
All students were incredibly well behaved,
participated fully in all activities and they even
managed to get some sleep at night. I’m confident
that each student benefitted from the camp
experience and I know, from the smiles on faces, that
they all enjoyed their time away. Thanks to all staff that
volunteered to come on camp. Your support of these
extra-curricular activities is much appreciated and
without you the camp would not have run as smoothly
as it did!

ROSEFEST 2018
As part of the Year 9 program at Rosehill Secondary
College, students participate in an Interdisciplinary
subject where they explore their personal strengths
and weaknesses and work towards developing their
teamwork, leadership and communication skills. As
part of their assessment, our students organised and
ran Rosefest (our school carnival) on Wednesday 14th
March.
Year 9 students were given a few weeks to prepare
everything from brainstorming their stalls, calling
sponsors, designing signs and last minute problem
solving. There were a wide range of stalls such as: BBQs,
hot chips, donuts, biscuits, milkshakes, spiders, slushies,
pizza, fairy floss, nachos, a raffle, dodgeball and pie
the teacher.
In total they raised $5981.50 which will be donated to
the following charities: Fred Hollows Foundation,
Wesley Mission, World Vision, Hunger Project Australia,
Melbourne Homeless Collective, Water Aid, Cancer

Japan Tour 2019
Trip to Japan Program for Years 9, 10 and 11 students.
Would you like your child to experience the beauty of
the Japanese culture? How about joining us on the
2019 Trip to Japan? All students are welcome
regardless of the language they are studying at the
school.
Highlights of the trip will include a visit to Tokyo
Disneyland, beautiful historical places in Kyoto and the
peace park museum in Hiroshima. We will also visit
Kogakkan High School, our sister school in Mie
prefecture, and stay with their families. The last trip was
extremely successful and those students who have
taken part in this program have found it to be one of
their most rewarding experiences.
The trip to Japan will take place in May 2019 (Term 2).
We intend to depart around the last week of May and
return the end of the first week of June.
The cost of the trip is approximately $5,100, however
this will decrease if additional students participate. The
tour cost includes: return economy airfares, 6 night
hotel accommodation, 6 breakfasts and a 7 day rail
pass, Tokyo Disneyland entrance and all insurances.
Return the slip attached to Ms Snow or Mr Hayakawa
at the College if you are interested in joining us!

Japanese Exchange Program 2018
Once again, Rosehill SC is seeking host families for 10-
12 Japanese students from our sister school, Kogakkan
High School. The students will be in Melbourne for 10
nights from Wednesday 25th July to Saturday 4th August
2018.
Conditions and Roles of Host Families:
Host families will be paid a nominal amount to
contribute towards costs and weekend activities.
Japanese students do not need their own room. As
long as everyone is happy the students can share a
room with your child. Boys will host boys and girls will
host girls.
Weekend activities can be as simple as shopping in the
city or watching your child’s sport match on a
Saturday. In the past, some families have organised a
Sunday BBQ together.
Japanese students are here to learn English so
Japanese language skills are not required. Students
studying Italian can also host students so that they can
make friends in Japan.
If you are interested in hosting a student, please return
the slip below to the Administration Office. If you would
like additional information about the homestay
program, please do not hesitate to contact us.

THE SONG FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE –
A.F. Harold
Frank doesn't know how to feel when
Nick Underbridge rescues her from
bullies one afternoon. No one likes
Nick. He's big, he's weird and he smells
- or so everyone in Frank's class thinks.
And yet, there's something nice about Nick's house.
There's strange music playing there, and it feels light
and good and makes Frank feel happy for the first time
in forever. But there's more to Nick, and to his house,
than meets the eye, and soon Frank realises she isn't
the only one keeping secrets. Or the only one who
needs help...
WHITE NIGHT – Ellie Marney
Bo Mitchell is in Year 11 at a country
high school with little on his mind
except footy and friends. Aurora
(Rory) Wild has grown up on a nearby
commune and is attending 'normal'
high school for the first time. Rory
belongs to an 'off the grid' radical
environmental community, and Bo is
initially intrigued by her community's 'no footprint'
philosophy. Meanwhile the council is planning to
demolish the local skate park and Bo and his friends
decide to organise a 'WhiteNight' event as a fundraiser
to save the park. As Bo is drawn away from his friends
and towards Rory he gradually comes to believe that
the commune is not a utopia after all, and that their
goal to go 'off the grid' may be more permanent -- and
more dangerous -- than anyone could have
predicted.
BALLAD FOR A MAD GIRL – Vikki
Wakefield
Everyone knows seventeen-year-old
Grace Foley is a bit mad. She's a
prankster and a risk-taker, and she's
not afraid of anything-except losing.
As part of the long-running feud
between two local schools in
Swanston, Grace accepts a challenge
to walk the pipe. That night she experiences something
she can't explain. The funny girl isn't laughing anymore.
She's haunted by voices and visions - but nobody
believes a girl who cries wolf. As she's drawn deeper
into a twenty-year-old mystery surrounding missing girl
Hannah Holt, the thin veil between this world and the
next begins to slip. She can no longer tell what's real or
imagined - all she knows is the ghosts of Swanston,
including that of her own mother, are restless. It seems
one of them has granted her an extraordinary gift at a
terrible price. Everything about her is changing - her
body, her thoughts, even her actions seem to belong
to a stranger. Grace is losing herself, and her friends
don't understand. Is she moving closer to the truth? Or
is she heading for madness?
