PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVES Thank you and congratulations to all staff, students and parents involved in our NAIDOC celebrations at the end of Term 2. Our students were involved in a variety of activities that have contributed to our knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Culture. The students level of engagement and their sense of having fun while learning is a credit to all involved. It was pleasing to see many parents attend our school assembly in the final week of term. Students always thrive when there are parents in the audience. Congratulations to all of the award winners. Thank you again to all students, staff and parents involved.

Balranald Central School would like to welcome Grant Mannix to our staff team. Grant has just completed a Bachelor of Education degree at Federation University in Ballarat and has been teaching in the Victorian education system for the past 6 months.

Grant was born and raised in Balranald and having accepted the Rural Area Relief teaching position is ecstatic to be back home and a member of the community once again. Congratulations to Kiandra Dalton, Tessa Duryea and Jordyn Jolliffe who competed in the Hay War Memorial High School AFL team that competed in the State carnival last week. The girls defeated Scots Albury 31 to 5 in the Grand Final and are now the State Champions and the holders of the Giants Cup. Well Done! Thank you to Mr Will Godber for organising our students to be part of the AFL school system.

On Friday the 4th August, Balranald Central School will be celebrating “Education Week”. Education week is a state-wide, annual event to celebrate public education in NSW. This year’s theme is I Learn, We Learn. It is a celebration of our schools’ commitment to ensuring: • We cater for the needs of each individual student • We have a culture of high expectations for our

students • Every student will be known, cared for and

respected • Partnerships with local business and industry create

opportunities for our students to thrive in society

To celebrate education week our teachers will be opening up their classrooms for parents, grandparents and community members to see teaching and learning in action. Visitors can arrive at any time during the day and will be greeted in the foyer by student representatives who escort visitors to the classrooms. A free sausage sizzle will be provided at 12.40pm. See the open classroom timetable in this newsletter. We have our parent/teacher evening on Tuesday 8th August. This is an important event on our school calendar and it is hoped that as many parents and students as possible, take advantage of this opportunity. We are all aware that quality education is a partnership between students, the school and parents and these interviews are a valuable way for information and student progress to be shared. On Monday 14th August from 6.00pm, we will have our Year 10 into 11 student and parent information evening. The evening will provide general information about the Higher School Certificate requirements, subject/course preferences, pathways and an opportunity for questions and answers. It is important that parents and students attend the evening if at all possible. Aaron Flagg

PRIMARY PONDERINGS Lion Club Public Speaking Winners The Balranald Lions Club Final of the Junior Public Speaking was held on Thursday 29th June at the Balranald Central School. Students from BCS and St Joseph’s Primary participated. The Year 3/4 section of the competition was taken out by Lilian Matarazzo from St Joseph’s Primary School and the Year 5/6 section by Rylan Dalton from BCS.

Pictured: Rylan Dalton Welcome back to term 3, I hope everyone had a well-rested holiday and are ready to hit the ground running. This term will be as busy as last term with many things happening. We will continue with the Mathematics groups on a Monday with Kindergarten to Year 6 involved. We will also continue with the Writing groups twice a week. It is important with colder months that all clothing worn to school is clearly labelled as it is much easier to hand back when it is left in unimaginable places. District Athletics Carnival This Friday a team of Athletes will be heading to Tooleybuc to compete in the Moulamein District PSSA Athletics Carnival. The Carnival starts at 9am sharp. Students are required to wear full school sports uniform and appropriate running shoes. A BBQ will operate on the day. Students will need to bring their recess and a water bottle. Parent/grandparent helpers are required to assist with timekeeping. These carnivals do not work without parent helpers and it would be great if we had quite a few parent/grandparents to work on a roster system. If you are able to help please let me know ASAP. Good luck to all our students who will be competing on the day. 100 Nights of Reading Congratulations: Ryan Johnstone Will Cimino Celena Cimino Zara Ellis

Read Aloud to kids It turns out that reading aloud; a time-honored tradition in so many families is actually a wonderful way of helping children to reach their full potential:

Reading aloud is a great way of engaging with young children.

Reading aloud promotes language development and early literacy skills

Reading aloud: • Builds motivation, curiosity and memory • Helps children cope during times of stress or anxiety • Take children to places and times they have never been -

enlarging and enhancing their worlds • Creates a positive association with books and reading Donation A very big thank you to Kerry White my Aunty for her very generous donation of 50 plus novels and picture books to be used in the primary and secondary classrooms. Kerry White is an author, reviewer and a judge for the Children’s Book Council of Australia.

MUSIC AT ASSEMBLY (TERM 2)

It was fantastic to see such talented singers, piano players and performers from primary and secondary school students at assembly in Week 10 of Term 2. Well done to all students who performed! Unfortunately, Year 3/4 was unable to perform due to the internet being disconnected. Miss Carmen Woods

My lost thing written by Rylan Dalton

As I was mining helplessly for profitable gems, I had no luck at all! Out of nowhere, I heard a horrific BOOM! As I took cover, there was another BOOM! After the explosions ceased I walked to where I thought the sound came from, and there it was, a gigantic hole. I decided to explore it. As soon as I walked in, a million lights shone at me from every direction! There, right in the middle of it all it was… T.N.T! I ran and took cover… but surprisingly there was no explosion! I went back, and figured out that it was not just a pack of T.N.T; it was combined with a scorpion! I had never seen anything like it. Who, what, where, why, how? Not only had I never seen anything like it before, it looked furious! After it had calmed down, I could pick it up. I called it Scorpoimite. Later on I went and mined many of those valuable gems and went home with Scorpoimite because I had gained its trust, big mistake we no longer have a house just a creator. Mum and Dad were furious so I showed them the gems I had found. It quickly quietened them and made them happier then I mined the rest of the gems through the year and made millions!
