O N G O I N G O P P O RT U N I T I E S Rockwood Park & Museum

Love history? Have a special interest in decorative arts, the Victorian era, architecture, or antiques? You will enjoy guiding visitors back in time to 1895 to explore the Bringhurst family’s turn-of-the-century lifestyle at Rockwood. This rural Gothic home was built in the early 1850’s by Joseph Shipley, a Wilmington native, and purchased by Sarah Shipley Bringhurst, his niece, in 1890. The rooms at Rockwood represent the way the house looked between 1895 and 1901, the early years of the Bringhurst occupancy.

Volunteers are needed to help: Be a costumed tour guide Assist with one-time projects or special events Help set up special exhibits Research the collection and archival records Garden in the formal garden and surrounding 72 acres

Volunteering at Rockwood Museum has great benefits! A rare opportunity to work closely with museum objects

and to lend a hand in setting up special ongoing exhibits in the museum.

Free admission to museum for volunteer and guest. Educational sessions about interpreting the museum and

other aspects of the collection and local history. Volunteer discounts at the museum gift shop. Field trips provided quarterly to other museums for continuing education and socializing with other Rockwood Museum volunteers. Yearly appreciation dinner for all museum volunteers.

The purpose of the Rockwood Preserva-tion Society is to pro-mote, preserve, and enhance the education-al, historical, architec-tural, and natural re-sources of Rockwood Park and Mansion.

Connecting Generations

Every year mentors and students are making connections that make a difference. Well, we like to ask….Who men-

tored You? How many times have you thought to yourself that you should volunteer because you would like to make a difference in someone’s life,

too? Creative Mentoring is a great opportunity for you to do all that and more. We’re all about inspiring youth and improving future generations.

Mentoring helps children achieve success in school and life by helping to build self-esteem, self-confidence, interpersonal communication skills, social values, aspirations and school engage-ment. Through personal one-on-one time in schools, mentors work with students to develop

their unique qualities and to reach their full potential.

We find that mentors get as much out of the relationship as the students. Come join us and make a difference in the life of a student!

At the heart of our programs are our exceptional volunteers. If you have time or talent to share, come join our Claymont Community Center volunteer team. You’ll enjoy helping neighbors improve their quality of life, and you’ll see first-hand how our programs make a positive difference. Unsure about the time commitment? We have a wide range of short-term and long-term projects to choose from. Perhaps you’d like to volunteer for just a couple hours to call BINGO. Or maybe you’d like to donate more time by tutoring a child, teaching an art class for seniors, lending a hand in the Food Closet, or serving on our Board of Directors.

You can also help by doing administrative work, joining a committee, or working on our grounds/facilities. Groups are also welcome to help out for a day when extra hands are needed. At Claymont Community, you’re sure to find a volunteer opportunity that’s right for you! The center is very much in need of a Customer Service Aide! Responsibilities would include: Greeting all people entering the Center Asking guests to sign in Directing people to various locations in the Center Answering the phone and direct callers to the appropriate

Reader Volunteer

Reading Nourishes the Imagi-nation of a Hospice patient. VITAS Healthcare® is looking for avid booklovers to read to hospice patients in their homes, the hospital or long term care facilities. Many hospice patients are un-able to read on their own. Vol-unteer readers offer hospice patients the ability to stay in touch with the world around them or the opportunity to escape into the world of a fa-vorite novel for a short time. By taking a small amount of time out of your busy schedule you can make the biggest difference in another’s life.
