dirEcTOr’s NOTEs
Terry and Gary first appeared on stage
together at the subterranean Dive Bar
at Avery Hill College, Eltham, where
the stage was so small they had to stand one
behind the other to perform.
Written and performed by Ian Long
and Noel O’Reilly. they made regular
appearances in sketches such as “Fruit
Gums”, “Jet-Setting Socks” and “Walking
A Bit Fast Aren’t We, Sunshine?” at the
Woolwich Tramshed and other community
centres and the like, working towards the
downfall of Margaret Thatcher and the
furtherment of avant garde comedy.
They were incorporated into the musical
play “Fish And Chip Paper” by Ian Long and
Dave Burrluck which played the Greenwich
Festival in 1983 and opened up the Tunnel
Club (now …) for theatrical performance.
Some of the scripts were amalgamated into
a 30 minute sitcom (which compromises
much of Act One of tonight’s show)
which failed to set the media alight and
consequently has been languishing in
a drawer until this recent rebirth with a
contemporary sequel and a Christmas
Special to boot!
I don’t know – I’m too close to see it clearly.
All I know is that I am phenomenally grateful
to those people at the EAT who have had
enough faith in this show to want to put it in
front of you (and I’m
phenomenally grateful
to you too for
chancing your
evening and hard
earned cash on an
unknown play)
