  • Myrtles CottageThis attractive three bedroom detached stone built period cottage, which has a delightful, secluded rear garden, is located in the sought after village of Ramsden to the north west of Oxford.

Ive had the property since 2001, recalls Ian. Having friends here, I first came as a weekender, then more often, then permanently. The original cottage fronting the road was built in the 18th Century and includes the sitting room, which has a wood-burning stove set in an original stone and timber fireplace, while the rear extension was added about 25 years ago. Behind the sitting room is a large dining room with French doors opening to the rear garden. Theres also a study, which Ive had fitted out with oak-panelled cupboards and book shelves, while the kitchen was refurbished eight years ago by Cotteswoods and has an Aga and integrated appliances. Above the kitchen and cloakroom are the master bedroom and its en-suite shower room, while above the sitting room theres a double bedroom, a single bedroom and a Jack and Jill bathroom. Ive updated the bathrooms too.

The garden was a mess when I first came and had a rickety old trellis at the front, remembers Ian. I replaced the trellis with a stone built wall. At the side, theres parking space for two cars and theres a log store, which I had built in stone to my own design with a slightly curved pyramidal roof, like those at Hidcote Manor Garden. The gravelled area adjoining the rear of the cottage is separated from the garden by another new stone wall, which is topped by a lavender hedge. Steps lead up to a lawn fringed with herbaceous borders, mature shrubs, and trees including weeping willow and plum. The garden backs onto coniferous woodland and is very private. Ive opened it up to the public during the villages biennial Gardens Open, which attracts hundreds of visitors and raises money for the Memorial Hall. Ive also hosted supper for all those that took part in a big tent on the lawn. Ramsden is a friendly, active and diverse little community, which holds many events in private homes or in the Memorial Hall, such as musical evenings and theatrical productions, continues Ian. Profits from these and the 200 Club, which I run, support the Memorial Hall and the church. Ramsdens pub, the Royal Oak serves good food and is a stopping point for bus services to Witney, Charlbury and Chipping Norton. Witney is just four and a half miles distant and offers every amenity including a Waitrose, a Sainsbury, and a Marks & Spencers, and has a free multi-storey car park. The local secondary school is also there, while the neighbouring village of Finstock provides local amenities including pre-schools, a primary school and a Post Office. Ramsden commuters use Charlbury station, which connects to London Paddington.

Ian concludes: Having now retired from the interior design industry, Ive bought Ramsdens old vicarage, which Im currently refurbishing, so Im not going very far! *
