Introduction: origin & goal
• MYRRHA accelerator risk evaluation → list of critical elements:
– RFQ in CW mode (4-vane or 4-rod)– ...
• OECD review (MIRT, 2009) → request to SCK•CEN of showing relevant accelerator activity
• need for reliability test platform• need for innovation platform
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 2
Test platform overview
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 3
to be located at the Centre de Ressources du Cyclotron, UCL Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium
Components
• design & construction modalities– collaborative
• MAX Collaboration• research institutes: IPNO, LPSC, IAP, CRC, Soleil• industries: Pantechnik, NTG, Cosylab, IBA, ...• research consultants (MoU): Spiral2, CERN, ...• private consultants: Linac Dynamics, ...
– strong MAX involvement: WP1 and WP2 partners• CNRS• CEA• IAP• KULAK• SCK•CEN
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 4
RFQ@UCL is also an "accelerator consortium test platform"
Components
• ECR proton source ← Pantechnik (Bayeux, France)
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 5
principal characteristics
voltage 30 kV
current 20 mA
RF 2.45 GHz, 1200 W
emittance 0.1 π.mm.mrad norm RMS for 5 mA
Components
• LEBT ← IPNO, benchmarking & error analysis by Linac Dynamics, realisation and commissioning by LPSC, controls by Cosylab
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 6
Benchmarking
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 7
Components
• RFQ ← IAP Frankfurt, benchmarking (3D fields) by KULAK and Linac Dynamics, manufacturing by NTG, tuning at IAP
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 8
Benchmarking

Components
• Diagnostics: low energy, high current– beam current
• interceptive: FC• non-interceptive: BCT
– beam position– beam profiles– emittances– longitudinal bunch properties
• likely to be based on existing items– Spiral2– Linac4
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 10
Components
• Power RF for RFQ: 176.1 MHz, 160 kW CW– TH781 tetrode based final amplifier– SS amplifier, Soleil technology
• efficiency• modularity for reliability
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 11
Components
• Controls– main target: be representative of full-size system
• distant• 3-tier• EPICS• low level with PLC's (slow) + FPGA cards in crates (fast)• will include timing
– Cosylab for architecture and realisation– test platform!
• LLRF– discussion with IPNO ongoing– looking for elegant integration
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 12
Components
• Services:– 750 kVA– profiting from CRC infrastructure– elec cabinets with remote diagnostics and controls– PLC-controlled cooling system
• deionized water loop• chilled and temperature stabilized deinonized water loop • air cooling loop
– integrated industrial procurement– test case for integration in EPICS system
Dirk Vandeplassche, MAX International Design Review, Brussels, 12-13 November, 2012 13
Conclusion
• setup at UCL/CRC has a high potential as a test platform:– 4-rod CW RFQ evaluation– beam characterisation– long reliability runs– innovation
• target date "first beam end of 2014" is still achievable
• possible extension with CH cavities (IAP)• SC-CH?
