In the olden days, the trishaw was a very popular mode of

transport in Malacca or Melaka as it is knew today. The elderly

used the trishaw to take them to the clinic. Housewives took the

trishaw when coming back from the market with her heavy

baskets. Schoolchildren took the trishaw to and from school.

Therefore, it is clear that a trishaw was a very common sight in

town these days. It was also common to see a family taking a

trishaw ride to the cinema in town. Parents would sat on the thinly

cushioned seat while children would squat at their feet, held on to

the iron bar in front of them. The trishaw puller usual cycled

barefoot, used hand signals when making a turn. When a pedestrian

or cyclist blocked their way, he would sound the bicycle bell in his

thumb and forefinger. It was pitiful to see old trishaw puller having

to pedal for their livelihood. Trishaw ride was a mere 40 cents or

so. Trishaw pullers were usually seen lining up the streets waiting

for passengers. Over time, these trishaw pullers became close

friends with their passengers. And of course, they were their

regular customers.
