Minna LaFortune, CEO/Designer
I was born in Kingston Jamaica and enjoyed a very idyllic
childhood. I learned to develop my creative mind
while I engaged myself in my art and craft classes while I
attended Tarrant Junior High School during my teenage years. I
passed my Arts and Craft exams for the Civics Exams and for
the Grade 9 Achievement test.
After Tarrant Junior High School, I attended Ardenne High
School were I continued my Art and Craft classes. My Art and
Craft education continued again when I went to college at the
University of Technology (formerly College of Arts Science and
Technology-CAST)
I enjoyed all my Arts and Craft classes. They opened a area of
my mind that is expressive and bold and full of ideas. I painted
still life objects, plants and the human anatomy. When I painted
I used acrylic and oil paints. I learned embroidery, sewing and
how create batik designed fabrics. I also learned to decorate
fabrics with various objects which included potatoes, and
designed printing blocks. I also worked with burlap and created
various designs on fabrics and garments using silk screens and
fabric dyes. During my spear time over the years, I enjoy doing
batik and Tye dye for my friends.
After years of being haunted by ideas for Tshirts and other
garments I Recently decided to embark on a career I have only
lived in my mind, and that is to become a T-Shirt and Cap
designer. Out of this decision my company JJA&M TSHIRTS
PLUS was born. The name of my Lable is Social Mixer.
*This is a new Clothing and Accessory line is designed for the
young at heart-for the International Urban market. Dedicated to
Jullian, Jason and Andre, my young nephews!
The response to my design is very encouraging. It makes me
feel that my artistic ideas can have a positive impact in peoples
lives.
Because of the warm reception to my designs I have called my
lable Social-Mixer! because that what it does it brings people
together, makes them smile and starts conversations!
The inspiration for my designs comes from being Jamaican
born, with African ancestry and having a deep appreciation of
the Jamaican patois language and its power to communicate
efficiently and effectively in beautiful musical rhythm!
I also get inspirations from my experience living in the major
metropolitan and beautiful multicultural, mosaic city- New York
City where people from all over the world lives including people
from Jamaica and the Caribbean region, such as Haiti, Puerto
Rico, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and Panama.
While my basic palate for my T-Shirts is Black, White and Red,
the influence of Africa is incorporated with the Tye -Dye skills
of the famous Nigerian designer Jimi Gureje, of Brooklyn, New
York. Jimi have created several one-of a-kind hand dyed T-
Shirts for my Summer collection.
Men,women and children like wearing my Tshirts, they feel
very comfortable in the 100 percent cotton Tshirts, they like the
feel of the cotton on their skin.
