Trends in Incidence of out- of-hospital cardiac arrest in Perth, Western Australia, 1996-2010

Background Estimates of the incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) are important to determine the burden of OHCA and provision of services. This study aims to investigate temporal trends in the incidence of OHCA in metropolitan Perth (Western Australia) between 1996 to 2010. LOCATION: -Perth, Australia -single ambulance service (St Johns Ambulance)

Methods Age and sex standardised incidence rates (ASIRs) using the direct method were calculated for all Perth OHCA cases attended by St John Ambulance (Western Australia)(SJA-WA) using SJA-WA OHCA data. Australian Bureau of Statistics population numbers for the Perth Statistical Division were used for rate denominators and the 2011 Australian population used as the population standard. Incidence rates are reported per 100,000 population and in four age categories (paediatric=0-14, young adult=15-34, adult=35-64, older adults=65+).

Results Over the 15-year period, there were 13,280 OHCA attended by SJA-WA in Perth.

Conclusions Overall, a decreasing temporal trend in the incidence of OHCA in Perth was observed prior to 2002, and is largely attributed to a decreasing incidence in the population aged over 65 years. ASIRs in Perth have since remained fairly constant. Australia-wide OHCA incidence data is required to form the basis for monitoring the impact of public health and clinical interventions.
