  MY SALAMANDER

SCIENCE REPORT BY SAMANTHA SELMAN

08/28/07

One day, I was playing in the front yard. My cats were chasing after some toads, and

all of the sudden I saw a salamander come up out of it's underground burrow. I ran inside

and I told dad. Mom grabbed a cottage cheese bucket and we put the salamander in a big

container. I ran outside to catch a grasshopper for my salamander to eat. Soon, I saw the

grasshopper's leg sticking out of the salamander's mouth. At first I thought that my

salamander was a lizard but dad said it was a salamander.

That day I got on the internet and found out how much a salamander eats, whereand how it lives, and what it eats. I found out that a salamander will eat every two or

three days, a salamander eats anything smaller than itself, and that it lives in Virginia,

Georgia and Florida. Since I live in Oklahoma, I thought it was strange that a

salamander would live here.

The next day, I looked in my salamander's container, and she was gone! Soon, she

came out from under the dirt that was in the container. My salamander spent most of her

time in her underground burrow. I decided to call my salamander Sally. I put a lid full of

water in her container. Two days after I put the lid full of water in, I saw her lying in the

water.

One day, I was studying salamanders on the internet and found out that

salamanders can live in small ponds, lakes, and rivers. They also lay their eggs in the

water. While studying salamanders I also found out that they are related to snakes and

frogs, but not lizards.

A week later, Mom made me let Sally go. I let her go in the same place where I found

her. There were toads everywhere. Suddenly, my salamander bit one of the toads! I think

she might have ate one of them if they hadn't hopped around so fast.
