I’ve analysed various digipaks to see different

features that I think could work well with my artist. The digipak reperesents not only the songs on the album but the artist themselves.

I want the digipak too feel personal, this will make it more desirable to fans.

I also want it to be interesting to look at but not overly fussy. It’s not about selling the artist as a celebrity but the artist as a musician.

Looking at other digipaks

These are three album covers by Ben Howard, Bastille and Vampire Weekend. I like the white framing around these covers, I think it draws the attention into the centre and makes the colours more prominent.

I like the natural feel

with this digipakcover, I think the sketchy writing makes it feel personal but I don’t know if this type of font would be to immature for my artists album.

These are two artists very

similar to Erick Baker, I like the emotion in their faces in both of these digipak covers, I think the image of James blunt seems very natural and not like he’s posing which I like but I like the warmth in the James Morrison album.

This is the album art

work of Jamie Fidell, I like this image has depth, the sketchiness on top makes it seem personal and the font used doesnt make it look to child like.

Something else I will consider is art work. In the

indie acoustic genre it is common for artwork to be used as an album cover.

TRIAL

This is an image of a galaxy painted on hands, I think this works really well and I’d like to try and recreate it but maybe by painting a forest or a skyline.

Page 15: My Project Pitch

This image is by one

of my favourite artist Nathan Ford, I think this style of artwork could be interesting to you. This is something I want to consider recreating but maybe using the face of the actor or something relating to the song.

For my genre of Indie/Acoustic the album cover

tends to be an image of the artist posing naturally or artwork (digital, paint, pencil etc.)

The fonts tend to be block bold or sketchy.

Not overly fussy or commercial looking, the focus is on selling the music not the artist as an individual.

One criticism of indie/acoustic digipaks is that it can be to simple and almost boring, that is not something that I want for my digipak.

Digipaks

These are two extremes of digipak designs, the XX digipak is very simple and plain and the Katy Perry digipak is very colourful and artificial. I don’t want either of these styles for my digipak, I want it to be personal and have a very natural earthy feel.

This is the original cover for

Erick Baker’s album. I like the block writing for his name but I think the yellow for the name of the album isn't very easily seen and I think the whole style of it seems very dated, the image is interesting but again I don't think it relates well to his style of music and its just a bit irrelevant.

Magazine Design

Page 21: My Project Pitch

For the magazine album I would like to use the image

used on the digipak cover, I think seeing the same image more often will make it more recognisable.

I want it to look professional and eye catching, it will be in a magazine which has a passive audience, it needs to stand out enough to make people want to stop and look at it.

I want it to have the same theme as the digipak so fonts etc. Will be the same.

It also needs to reflect the genre and the artist, this wont be as personal as the digipak because it is directed at a different audience.

This a magazine avert

for tom odells album, they have used the image from his album. It also has ratings from music magazines, this makes the album more desirable and in bold at the bottom it has the date of release, I like that it doesn't stated this it should just obvious.

The target audience for this Erick Baker song is 17-21

year olds, this is because the song is about a relationship and it reflects relationships that could be between these ages.

For the digipak the target audience is mostly fans, so it will need to be personal so the fans feel connected to the artist.

For the magazine advert its directed at the general public so it needs to be eye catching and interesting, these basic features also apply to the digipak.
