Preparation:

Here are a series of shots evidencing my photo-shoot for the image I was going to use for my front cover of my school based magazine. In shot one I am giving the models a basic brief on posture and facial expressions I would like them to have as I take the shots, I wanted them to engage as though participating in a technology based lesson. I used the technology students and classroom as this is a naturalistic setting and the models would be comfortable around the equipment. In the second shot I’m adding mise en scene feature’s like the apron and goggles to give the connotation of a workshop environment with the need to wear the protective clothing. In the third shot I am consulting my second model as to how I would like him to be part of the shot in holding the paperwork alongside of my first model to show the unity of the school. Also being of different ethnicities this would also give the connotation on my front cover that the school is multicultural. Furthermore I chose these particular models as they are dressed in smart attire reinforcing the connotation that this school is smart and respectable.

First shot type

Evaluation

I chose to position this shot the way I did because I felt it captured a work ethic of a technology student and also gave the connotation of the amount of practical work in the school. Also I think the angles at which the students and teacher are stood reflects the way teachers of the school are helpful and guide students during all aspects of work with a positive attitude. However the lighting on some of the shots limits the focus and the hand in the foreground makes the models in the background go out of focus.

Second shot type

Evaluation

On this shot I also like the positioning because they are facing the camera and there is more of an indication of the practical work, consequently giving a clearer connotation which is what I aim for my front cover. Additionally I think this image gives more of a representation of the ‘lesson’ because of the technology equipment in the background once again giving the connotation that it’s a technology themed magazine , with them being in a workshop. Despite this I feel some of the models are on certain shots unclear and that I should have brought them closer or included more mise en scene features to differentiate between teacher and student.

Third shot type

Evaluation

This shot has more weaknesses than strengths however the lighting in this shot is natural. But the composition of the models is not as close making the space in between them make the front cover look blank. Also I have identified the casual aspects that could be interpreted from this shot as the student is sitting on the table and the model near the machine no longer wears goggles. This may cause some issues in how certain readers like parents and teachers would receive this because the aim of a school based magazine is to promote the school and showing these faults may give a non studious and unprofessional connotation.

Fourth shot type

Evaluation

From all the shots I have taken I find this image most effective. The composition of the models gives the interpretation that the school works in collaboration. There are also aspects of mise en scene within the shot showing aprons and a school whiteboard in the background therefore reinforcing the school related theme. Furthermore the use of the flash on one of the shots brings out a lot of colour which makes the shot stand out more than others ultimately making it ideal for a front cover image.
