Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically toline up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the sameemployer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimesconfusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet companyrepresentatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one.

ResumesBefore the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are goingto be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’reinterested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not asinterested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Besure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread thembefore you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness onyour part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t beafraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you arethere for!

Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of yourresume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about yourabilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very muchlike your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support yourqualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representativeknow why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Schmitt offers the following socialmedia tips to give yourself the bestchance of getting the job you arehoping for:

• Audit all your social mediaprofiles to make sure there aren'tany posts or pictures you wouldn'twant a potential employer to see.

Assume guilt by association –delete any offensive posts by yourfriends and hide them if they have ahabit of posting questionablecontent on your profiles. After youare done, Google yourself to makesure there's nothing hanging out onthe Internet you might have forgottenabout from an old account or fromsomething someone else hasposted.

• Demonstrate knowledge ofyour profession. Repostinginteresting articles you come acrossrelating to your field demonstratesknowledge and passion. Use your

LinkedIn profile to share yourexperience and expertise, and postanything of interest that you mayhave authored on all your socialmedia profiles.

• Make connections. LinkedIn isgreat for connecting with oldteachers and other professionalcontacts. If you had a goodrelationship with a teacher or formercoworker, ask him or her to write arecommendation that you can poston your profile. Connect with thosethat you meet at job fairs or industryevents.

• Learn about your futureemployers. Follow companies forwhich you might eventually like towork so you can build yourknowledge base about thecompany. Following the Twitter,Facebook and LinkedIn feeds ofcompanies and professionalorganizations is also a great way tolearn about job openings - and youcan mention that you learned aboutthe opening through social media to

show that you're adept at usingthese networks.

"Some may lament that byaccessing your profiles, employerscan dig farther into your personallife than you would like," saysSchmitt. "But these platforms giveyou an unprecedented opportunityto market yourself to prospectiveemployees and make connections toother professionals."

Networking your way to opportunityBy Deana Barcz

We have been hearing about peoplewho have been laid off from their jobsor choosing to change their careers.Who do you turn to when everyoneyou have known was at your previousjob? Or what if you raised yourchildren as a stay-at-home parent andnow you are looking for a volunteeropportunity or are re-entering theworkforce?

Building Your Network

When you are seeking an idealsituation for yourself, networkingcould be your answer. One of thebest ways I know to find a "perfect fit"is through networking and growingyour circle of friends. Networking isnot just for sales people anymore. It isan extremely valuable "tool" to knowhow to do and to put effort into.

Networking is defined as "aninterconnected system of things orpeople; an extended group of peoplewith similar interests or concerns whointeract and remain in informalcontact for mutual assistance orsupport". When you become clearabout what you want and you have a

network of friends / associates tospread word through, it becomeseasier to then get exactly what youwant. By going outside of your usualroutine, you will meet groups of newpeople and this is a valuable asset inlife that you will always appreciate.

Here are some tips to building yourown successful network:

1. Focus

Figure out where you want to focusyour efforts. Do you want to work fora large corporation or a smallbusiness? Would you like to volunteerfor an organization that focuses oneducation or nutrition?

2. Reach Out

Make a list of the people you knowright now. Send them an email or givethem a call asking for suggestions.Perhaps they have contacts who maybe helpful to you. Maybe they belongto an organization, such as theChamber, and can bring you as aguest. Or they may have ideas onwhere to spend your time and who tomeet. Many opportunities come fromthe people who are already in your

"circle". From there, you can growyour network. Within a short periodof time, you can develop a largenumber of "leads" in your areas ofinterest.

3. Follow up

Send a personal, handwritten thankyou note to the new people you meet.It is so important to recognize thepeople who have helped you or mayhelp you in the future. Not only willyou stand out (regrettably, peopleforget to let others know how gratefulthey are and do not realize how thissimple, "takes a few minutes" kind ofeffort means to the other person) andthis will help that person rememberyou, keeping you in mind for newopportunities.

4. Stay Connected

Once you find your ideal career /volunteer opportunity (and you will),keep your new network alive bychecking in. Send an email, give aquick call, meet up for coffee. Andremember to keep your network inmind in connecting them to their idealopportunities and resources. It is

Financial tips fornew graduates

(ARA) – If you are a new graduate, acollege degree is just the first step inthe new direction your life will betaking. A new career, potentially anew community to live in and a bit ofcash in your pocket to spend - thereare a lot of changes happening.

College graduates carry an averageof $25,250 in student loan debt, according to The Project on StudentDebt, by The Institute for CollegeAccess and Success. Compiled withthis debt are the potential expenses ofjob searching, moving, aprofessional wardrobe and a newcar or bus pass. But receiving that firstpaycheck - and subsequentpaychecks - can lead to bad financialmanagement if not properly handled, says John Vaccaro, senior vicepresident from Massachusetts MutualLife Insurance Company(MassMutual).

"New graduates should curb their

urge to spend freely and think abouttheir future goals to avoid financialsetbacks like credit card debt andspending beyond their means,"Vaccaro says.

To help prevent new graduates fromsinking deeper into the debt hole, and to look ahead to saving forretirement, Vaccaro has somefinancial planning tips to help gradsget the most out of their newpaychecks.

• Develop a budget

Almost half of Americans reportthey're living paycheck to paycheck, according to a 2011 CareerBuilderSurvey. New graduates should createa budget, including all expenses fromrent/house payments, to haircut costsand weekly groceries. Also includespace for savings—if possible.Categorize each expense into anecessity category and adiscretionary spending category,

But I think it might be time for me todo something different.

So, what do I do? Which train of life, which path should I take?

As I think about the possible paths Ican take, the uncertainty andunpredictability of the economy andtrying to figure out a career stressesme out. I get anxiety just thinkingabout it. You can't count on anythinganymore, much less "plan" a career. With so much career uncertainty, what always helps me think clearly isa conversation with a friend. So I satwith my friend Ben to catchup at acoffee shop outside Grand CentralStation in New York City.

I told him that I was thinking of anumber of career paths. All of whichSEEM no better than the one of sittingstill. Path 1 has these advantages butit doesn't pay as well and who knowswhat will happen after the first year.Path 2 seems pretty good but will Ireally be satisfied? Path 3 is a big riskwith a payoff years away...maybe.Path 4 is a radical shift and willrequire me to make a lot of sacrificesand should I be risking so muchduring a tough and an unpredictableeconomy when I have a mortgage topay and a family to feed?

Did you ever feel like all the paths infront of you are all bad?

Speaking to Ben made me feel better. He told me of his experience with thisstart up business he and his businesspartner operate. They started a smallcompany a few years ago andrecently approached a potential bigcustomer. Being skeptical at theirbusiness, this big customer askedthem what they've accomplished todate. Slightly unsure, they scrambledto pull together a presentation thatreflected their achievements sincestarting the business.

When they finished the presentation, they were pleasantly surprisedbecause they had actuallyaccomplished a lot...significantlymore than they thought. They hadn'trealized how much they actuallyachieved until they looked back andwrote it down.

What I learned from speaking withBen is that you can only connect thedots in your life looking back. Thatwhen you take a good hard lookback at all the points in your life, allthe choices you made, all the pathsyou took-it all makes perfect sense. And it usually works out! But whenyou're the midst of all the chaos of life

or deciding which path to go to next, you are unsure where it will lead you.

What I realize is that We havealways lived in chaos and have beenembracing it all along! It onlyappears orderly or connected whenyou look back.

I met my wife by chance. I live whereI live through random coincidence. Imet my friends amidst chaos. I workwhere I work by a stroke of luck. Halfway in my career, I was given what Ithought was the worst job ever. Yearslater, it was the best thing that everhappened to me! So much of my lifehas brought me to my present momentby chaos, luck, chance andrandomness. No path I took backthen had a guaranteed outcome ofsuccess. No path was really all thatsecure. Or perfect.

I believe that as I think about takingthe next step in my career and my life,I don't need to over-analyze thepossible consequences. Instead, whatI need to do is to balance my overlylogical, hyperactive mind with myintuitive mind and choose a pathbased as much on my gut, instinct, passion, personal interest and corebeliefs.

I have realized that if I am to feel less

stress and anxiety about careeruncertainty, I need to accept thatchaos and unpredictable events willlie on every path. No matter whichroad I take, it will be full of bumps, shocks and maybe even LUCK!

And just maybe taking one of thosepaths will put me into what I call the"Sweet Spot" of Luck, Randomnessand Chance! You have to be in it towin it!!!

And maybe the guy who everyonesays is 'lucky' will be me? Maybe theperson everyone thinks has got a'golden chance' might just be me.Why not? In a world full of chaos andunpredictability, anything is possible -bad and good. But why not good? Why not awesome things? Why notsuccess? Chaos favors those whoembrace it!

So, on the road full of chaos it doesnot matter which path I choosebecause there is no sure outcome ofany path. All the dots will connectand everything WILL make sense inthe end. What really matters most isthat I stop staring at the lists of prosand cons and start walking!

Recently I had my 19 year anniversary working for a Fortune 500 company. NineteenYEARS!!! I can't believe it. When I started, I never expected to stay as long as I have— by luck or by choice. It just turned out that way. And with all the uncertainty at work, chaos in the economy and unpredictability of life, I have no way of truly knowing if Iwill be at this company for another few years.

By Bob MiglaniBob Miglani writes about dealing with stress and anxiety by learning how to moveforward in life on his blog called Embrace the Chaos. which will help highlight areas whereexpenses could be cut - if needed. For example, are payments for cableor satellite TV necessary, or could yousurvive with free local TV and a lessexpensive subscription for wireless ormail delivery movie rentals? Settingup a budget can help a newgraduate determine if more moneyfrom a paycheck can be put intosavings.

• Look into work benefits

The first job is a learning experience

for many in figuring out benefits andmaking them work. Recent graduatesshould take advantage of anyemployer offered retirement plans like401(k)s as soon as they qualify. Foryounger new grads, the combinationof time and potential for a retirementaccount to grow are powerful inplanning for retirement down theroad. Health, life and disabilityincome insurance are also goodbenefit options to research. If yourcompany doesn't offer these kinds of

benefits, consider obtainingcoverage independently.

• Pay off the right debts first

Debt can occur in a lot of differentforms for new graduates. Carpayments, student loans, mortgagesand credit card accumulations are afew of the more common forms ofdebt. It's a good idea to pay off thosedebts that have the highest interestrates and are not tax deductible first.Ideally, a person should have enoughsavings on hand to pay off a short

term debt, like credit card purchases,on a monthly basis.

• Rein in spending habits

Look yourself in the mirror andidentify your spending habits. If youlike to impulse buy, try forcing yourselfto delay impulse purchases by 24hours. Also determine if yourspending habits are influenced in anyway by emotional factors or peerpressure. Once these habits areidentified, it's easier to establish waysto circumvent bad financial decisions.
