BACKGROUND • Kuala Lipis is a district located in north-west of Pahang• It covers an area of 5198 km² and bordered by Cameron

Higlands and Perak on the west, Jerantut on the east, Kelantan and Raub on the north and south.

• The former capital of Pahang from 1898 until 1953 before the state capital was shifted to Kuantan in August 1955

• The word Lipis is related with a herb plant known as ‘Serau Lipis’ (Pavetta indica)

• Lipis had been a house for the top names of Malaysia such as Sultan Pahang, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Tun Muhamad Ghazali Shafie (former Minister of Internal Affairs), Ishak Haji Muhammad or famously known as Pak Sako (a journalist/writer and political activist), celebrity chef Redzuwan Ismail known as Chef Wan and the national favourite singer Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin.

POPULATION GROWTH

• Population in 2000: 73,391• Population in 2010: 89,730• It is stated that Kuala Lipis have small

population after Cameron Highlands with 38,471 population in 2010 which is smaller compare to other district in Pahang.

• The population increase leisurely within year since the development of the city is quite slow.

AIR QUALITY

• Picture shows local weather for 5-day forecast at Kuala Lipis from 24 Feb until 28 Feb 2014.

• With greenery and natural environment, less construction and transportation, it gives a good air quality for human being.

BIODIVERSITY• Slow development makes fragmentation and

degradation of habitat can be controlled. • The natural looks provide clean air, fresh water and

food products. Thus it gives a good health to human without disturbing the ecosystems.

WASTE AND RECYCLING• Low awareness in reuse and recycling among residents

cause environment need to bare with waste. • At rural area, they use to have their own landfill which

is not environmental friendly and it will create pollution and release greenhouse gases which is not good.

ECO FOOTPRINT

• It is a measure of human demand on the Earth’s ecosystems.

• In Kuala Lipis, the ecological footprint is average since it is balance usage between the environmental demand and human consumption.

TRANSPORTATION• Public transportation: Buses, Taxis,

Train• Less public transportation services

require affordable residents to use private transports to access town.

HEALTH AND HEALTHCARE

• With Hospital Kuala Lipis had been upgraded and a few private clinic available nearby, health facilities become more proper.

• Rapid increase in average life expectancy at birth would be the indicator to a health and longevity.

GREEN SPACE

Kuala Lipis offered a lot of green space which is vital for human wellbeing. The existence of many natural places will provide good quality of environment.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Subsequently, with lots of green spaces, it will be a key criteria to control the climate change. Indirectly, they can help cool the environment during heat waves and good infiltration and accessible of water will reduce flood risk. Also with low traffic congestion, it reduces climate change impact to residents.

FOODS• A lot of locally produced food become a key to a

sustainable food system. In this region, old residents like to eat the self-plant vegetable which is free insecticide. With famous fishing and farming activities from this area gives an extra mark to sustainable food system.

• Some of famous food in Kuala Lipis is Nasi Kebuli, Sambal Hitam, Gulai Masam Keladi, Asam Rong and Gulai Masam Tempoyak Ikan Patin.

Kuala Lipis have one of the biggest gold mine in Malaysia at Penjom. Mining industry, plantation, farming, logging and manufacturing becomes an economic base for residents.
