My greetings to all the Club members!
Each month, each season gives us reasons to revel in the joy of a festivity, tocome together and celebrate in the bosom of our great Club. Sometimes weconjure up a reason ourselves. Events, small or big, require hordes of personnelto work behind the curtains to ensure a glitch-free celebration. The sameholds in the case of events held at our Club. But they need clarity of purpose;they need to know what they have to do. Let me make myself clear with theassistance of a few statistics. The event ‘Tollywood Nite’ that was held towardsthe end of the last month received 700 registrations prior to the last date ofregistration and an astounding 700 registrations on the last day alone, whichwas a day before date of the event. Not expecting so many registrations onthe last day, food was ordered only for 800 people. This proved to be a majororganizational hindrance. But who is to be blamed? Certainly, not theorganising committee! Let us accept this episode as a lesson for the future. Irequest all the members to kindly register themselves for events prior to thelast date so our memories of the day are not soured.
I also want to use this space to inform the about a party to be held on the NewYear’s Eve. And registrations for this would be closed by the 30th of December. But don’t wait for the last date to register!
Some new rules that are being enforced from now on are also mentioned inthe following page.
Regards.

It was a 'nite' to that would surely go downas one of the most memorable in thehistory of this Club. While fireworksilluminated the sky, the vivacious ParvatiMelton and the lively Vimala Raman litup the lawns of Waltair Club. Truly, a 'nite'to remember!
The UNITY IN DIVERSITY car rally for Waltair Clubmembers was organized by the Ladies Sub-Committeeon 18 th September 2011. The event had a veryencouraging response with total of 30 cars participatingin it. The event began with a word building game usingthe letters in the phrase “UNITY IN DIVERSITY” whileregistration was going on. Each team was given snacks, soft drinks and water bottles.
The first car was flagged off by the President of WaltairClub and the second car by the Honorary Secretary. Soonall 30 cars were flagged off and the rally was off to a roaringstart.
All cars were to follow one of four routes charted out bythe organizers. A total of six points were designated alongthe route for participants to stop, complete activities thereand earn points to win the rally. In keeping with the richand varied religious diversity of our country, the six stopswere a Gurudwara, a Temple, a Mosque, a Buddhist site,an ISKCON temple and a Church. Activities to becompleted ranged from making a flower garland,
decorating a ‘puja thali’, writing Hare Krishna 108times, deciphering a jigsaw puzzle, matchingreligions/organizations/faiths with their foundersand finally a cross word puzzle of world famousmonuments and the countries in which they arelocated.
The entire rally took about 2 hours and the mostheartening aspect of this year’s rally was thatALL cars that registered returned back to thestarting point.
For the first time in the history of Waltair Club carrallies, two judges were requested to compile thepoints earned by the participants at each pointalong the rally route and announce the winnersafter totaling the points. The two judges who tookout their time and the worked through the tediouscompilation were Mrs. Ammaji Rayudu and Mrs.Usha Monish Rao. While the points were beingtallied, checked and re-checked, all participatingcars were presented a Reebok watch, a mini-gymbag and a cap all worth about Rs 4000. Hugethanks to the event sponsor Mr. Shekhar of M/sMichelin Pit Stop who sponsored all theparticipation gifts, the cash prizes and all other gifts.
The first prize of Rs. 7,000/- was bagged by Mr. P.Krishnakant, Mrs. Rajiji Chitra, Mr. Shaad Mehdiand Dr. Sailesh Atmakuri. The second Prize of Rs.5,000 was won by Mr. Atmakuri Ravi Kumar andhis family. The third prize was won by an all-ladiesteam of Mrs. Vani Kancharla, Mrs. Jaya NarasimhaRao, Dr. Sugandhi Atmakuri and Mrs. RadhikaBodepudi. Looked like a very lucky day for theAtmakuri family since every prize winning car hadsomeone from the Atmakuri family. A luckycoincidence for them! The best decorated car alongwith the best dressed team was won by Mr. ShabbirEkhlas and family for depicting the theme toperfection. Two consolation prizes were also given.Congratulations to the Ladies Committee for awonderful event that was meticulously planned andperfectly executed.
It is difficult to say goodbye to good people…especially when they have been true friends andicons to the world. The time has now come for us to say adieu to Shobha Prasad whose untimelydeath a few days ago is a reminder to all of us about the vagaries of time and the shortness of life.In the passing away of Shobha, we mourn the silence that is left behind after the mega celebrationof life…like the silence that comes after a catastrophic tsunami…like the quietness that befallsEarth after the wild storm has passed. Her sonorous voice calling out the numbers at Tambola andher impeccable command over the English language will always come first to our mind when weremember this great soul.
The word “Shobha” means “brilliance” in Sanskrit. Truly, our friend Shobha Prasad was the epitomeof brilliance and her radiance permeated our lives and every corner of the Waltair Club. In her own sweet, soft way she wasthe chosen leader and a unanimous member of every Ladies Sub-Committee…and a valuable player at that. Shobhawould be just a call away for every creative activity and her intelligence and dedicated help made her the true pillar of manysuccessful events in the club.
Shobha was the combination of many wonderful personalities. She was the perfect host to many a party, the smilingguardian to youngsters who were inspired by her dignity and grace, the loving mother who rocked the cradle of one of thefinest cricketers the state of Andhra Pradesh has ever seen, the gracious wife of one of the most legendary sportsmen, thegolden voice of many events , the energetic teacher to many a baby in her crèche, the intelligent friend to kitty group ladies, the talented cook who could turn out the best Andhra cuisine dishes and the typical Andhra daughter who brought pride andglow to women around her.
The story of life is very strange and God’s will and verses of destiny will always amuse me. I always wonder at the irony ofthe cycle of life and death and reminiscence at the drama of the whole act. The exit of Shobha marks the end of an era ofexcellence and the Waltair Club will always miss her motherly touch and finess at many occasions. For the women of theclub…..we have lost a dignified sister and a beacon of light which had guided us on our journey in the past. We will alwaysmiss her warm smile and reassuring words and whenever the world talks of eminent women…Shobha Prasad will beremembered with great respect.
May her soul rest in peace and the club members and committee pray that God gives her son Kinnu the strength to bear withthe loss of such a positive aura in his home.

A Squish Branch
I hold a tree branch,My grip is very tight,A dark green squishy branch it is,A caterpillar’s plight.
I examine the goo on my hands,In my head I think, “Dear me!”I have crushed the dreams,Of a butterfly-to-be,
I wash my hands with sorrow,The slime washes away,I watch the green get sucked into the drain,This is not a fixable mistake.I’m sorry, caterpillar.

THE COCHIN SUBURBAN CLUB
The Cochin Suburban Club located at Ernakulam was established in theyear 1979 as a small time club in an unused house but with prominentpersonalities as members. Activities, though, began only in 1981 when thefirst committee took charge. With time, the club expanded and started offeringbetter facilities to its members. The club got a huge makeover under its PresidentMadhavan Nair who introduced swimming pools and several other facilitiesturning it into a club that could be compared with several esteemed clubs inthe state of Kerala. Over the years, the Cochin Suburban Club has grown intoa respected club with facilities like a restaurant whose tandoori food is a hotfavourite, space for all major indoor and outdoor sports like badminton, tennis, and billiards apart from a grass topped play area for children, a library, twoparty spaces with the ability to accommodate 300 people each and a full-fledged conference room. The club’s Ayurvedic Centre though, is one aspectthat sets it apart from other clubs. Something that is unique about the club is the fact that it arms both husbandand wife in a family with voting rights. The Cochin Suburban Club, apart from its latest affiliation with the WaltairClub, has affiliations with major clubs in India as well as countries like France, Australia and Kenya.
1982 is one of the leading clubs of the state, TheCosmopolitan Club. The Club started modestly witharound 150 in a rented building but in a period of threeyears acquired land and shifted to its building. The Clubhas now expanded to about 800 with the most prominentpersons of the city being its members. The Club boasts ofa number of facilities which include arenas for both indoorand outdoor games. The most attractive among thesewould be the Tennis Courts with synthetic turfs. The facilityhas been applauded by players of international staturelike Ramesh Krishnan. It also houses tables for snookerand table tennis. The swimming pool at the Club tookabout a year to complete which in itself provides an insight to the amount of effort put in to build the facility. Apart from these, the Clubalso has air-conditioned rooms for its members and members of associated Clubs in addition to a restaurant Punjabi and Chinesecuisine along with the local food.
