My First Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Explanation for Teachers Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867 in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Born into a log cabin, Laura lived with her father, Charles (�Pa�), her mother, Caroline (�Ma�), her older sister, Mary and baby sister, Carrie.

When Laura was in her 60s, she began to write down the stories of her childhood for her daughter, Rose. The first of these stories were published in a book titled Little House in the Big Woods. Soon children from all over the world were writing to Mrs. Wilder, asking her to tell more of the stories from the days when she was a little girl.

Laura Ingalls Wilder decided to write her next book, Farmer Boy, about the life of her husband, Almanzo Wilder, and his boyhood days in Malone, New York. After that book was published, even more children asking for more stories about Laura and Almanzo. Laura wrote six more books to answer the questions of her readers.

In the series �My First Little House Books�, younger readers are introduced to the wonderful world of Little House and Laura. The first thirteen books are simplified versions of stories featured in the original books, Little House in the Big Woods and Farmer Boy.

All of these books may be read aloud as picture books. The comprehension questions on the following pages can be presented orally in conjunction with the reading or at the end of the story, with the children answering the questions to test their comprehension of the story. For children able to follow directions, the worksheets can be passed out with the children following along with the story and circling the correct answer to the question, or the pages can be distributed at the end of the read for students to answer individually.
