Transcript of My Exchange Year in Japan
Hello Everyone! Its been a long time since I wrote my first post. Now, I would like to share to you about my experience in Japan (September 2012 - August 2013). So, on September 24, 2012 I went to Japan in order to participate in a program called Junior Year Program in English or well-known as JYPE. That program was held by Tohoku University. Tohoku University is located in Sendai city, Miyagi prefecture, approximately 350 kilometers from Tokyo. Sendai is not so populated; it is a quiet city with population about 1.065.000 people living in area of 789 km2. In Sendai, I live in a dormitory that belongs to Tohoku University named University House Sanjo.
Part 1 : Living in Sendai
University House Sanjo consists of 3 main buildings (North Building, West Building, and East Building) and one management office building. I lived in the second floor of West Building unit number 2 with 6 Japanese students and 1 international student from Thailand (most of them are freshmen). My unit consists of 8 private rooms, 3 toilets, 2 shower rooms, 3 sinks, 2 laundry machines, and 1 common area with kitchen and TV. The common area was my favorite place since I can interact with my unit mate there. Occasionally, we held some cooking party (most of the time Japanese Food). Because Japanese academic calendar starts on March/April, I had different unit mate in fall semester (October 2012 to January 2013) and spring semester (April 2013 to July 2013) (note: maximum stay for regular student in University House Sanjo is 2 semesters). Here are some pictures of me and my unit mate in spring semester (too bad I did not take any pictures with my unit mate in fall semester).
As we know that living in Japan is not cheap, everything is expensive. A bottle of mineral water (about 600ml) will cost you about 80 - 120; 5 kilograms of rice will cost you about 1800 - 2000; and one-way city subway will cost you about 150 - 290. In order to save money, I did several things such as:1. Cook my own food and bring bento to campus2. Buy a bicycle3. Do arubaito (part-time job)
