Due to her merit, a well had been granted to Israel in Miryam’s honor, and when she died, the well disappeared. Midrashic texts teach us about Miryam’s well. They say it was a sieve-like rock where water gushed out from the top. It travelled along with B’nei Yisrael through the wilderness and when they stopped to camp, the well would stop too, resting by Moshe’s tent near the entrance to the courtyard. The princes of the tribes would raise their staffs and the water would gush forth and separate into four streams which would form the layout of the camp. There would be so much water that women would travel by boat to visit each other in the different tribes. The Talmud teaches us that one who wishes to see the well should climb Mt. These midrashim correspond to Pesach and our people in a beautiful way. The story of Pesach is filled with water. The story begins with water when Pharaoh orders all the Jewish male babies be thrown into the waters of the Nile. It continues when Miryam places Moshe’s basket in the waters of the Nile. She follows it to where Pharaoh’s daughter draws him out and grants him his destiny. The waters of the Sea of Reeds rise up like walls, creating a path that led B’nei Yisrael to freedom. Water purified the Priests when they performed their sacred service and it was on water that boats travelled and brought chalutzim (pioneers) to build the land. It is water that drips, every precious drop that makes the Negev bloom; like water, the Torah quenches the spiritual thirst of our people. In recent years, there has been a tradition to place a cup of water on the seder table in honor of Miryam. Whether you choose to do this or not, Miryam’s legacy should have an impact on your seder. We often associate Miryam with water, not only because she stood with Moshe when B’nei Yisrael crossed the sea. Many of the significant events in Miryam’s life were surrounded by water. We can all learn important lessons from Miryam. We should be courageous like she was when she put the basket in the river; we should learn from our mistakes like she did when she spoke ill of Moshe’s wife; and we should be devout like she was in the way she dedicated her whole life to Israel. This Pesach, keep in mind these lessons with hope for a year full of blessings that flow like water. Chag Pesach kasher v’sameach! “... like water, the Torah quenches the spiritual thirst of our people.”

My Cup Runneth Over…with WaterBy Ben Kreshtool

As we enter the month of Nisan, we begin our preparations for the Festival of Pesach which occurs on the 14th of the month. Nisan is filled with many significant days, not just Pesach. On the 10th of Nisan, we learn that Miryam died after 39 years in the desert. Miryam is the first of Israel’s three great benefactors to die, and when she died, there was no water for the congregation. It is taught that three gifts were given to Israel because of the merit of Moshe, Aharon and Miryam.

Carmel and look in the distance. You will see a rock in the sea; this is Miryam’s well that fills all of the wells in the world.

She follows it to where Pharaoh’s daughter draws him out and

grants him his destiny. Whether you choose to do this or not, Miryam’s legacy should

have an impact on your seder.

4 The Voice of Beth El Congregation

The quiet calm of early rising. First stirrings. A creak on the steps, always that same spot. The dog rustles in his bed, sniffing the air to know what the day will bring, stretching his legs, wondering about food and weather, sensing his master’s mood. A moment to stop and think, to consciously embrace a new day, its challenges and the gentle grace it brings. Breath and life, an old song rattles in the back of my mind. When did I first hear that, those artful notes, that plaintive melody?

He is older now, our pooch. Almost venerable in his doggish ways. He patiently sits by the window and waits, looking out, scanning the yards, his domain. He knows every inch of it, every corner and crack, every twig fallen from a tree. We slip out of the door from the warmth of home to another world. A red light slowly, softly, gently, yet inexorably rises in the east. Street lights begin to sputter and go out, like giant candles whose wicks have run down into melted wax, agents of their own destruction.

Up ahead a raccoon crosses our path, pausing for a moment to stare balefully at us with his bandit eyes. Everything is heightened. Each bird’s song can be heard. The wind, only in the upper branches of the trees, murmurs of summers past and springs to come. Stars and

planets shine brightly. There is Venus, there Jupiter, there red-tinted Mars. A sickle moon presides over the heavens, almost austere in its dignity, its endless rounds of waxing and waning. There is a quiet in these moments that is restful and pregnant at the same time, soon to be released, but also precious.

Lights flicker in homes along the way, others rising to a new day. Soon the phones will be ringing, the highway in the distance humming, the emails dinging, all of the noise of modern life in its constant cacophony. But not quite yet. Dawn still stubbornly clings, refusing for yet another moment (or two) to relinquish this early morning sacred time to the sun. With gratitude, we’ll wait patiently, and walk on.

Alvin and Lois LapidusAlvin and Lois Lapidus have had a long and meaningful relationship with Beth El.

Lois’s parents were founding members when the synagogue was established in 1948. Eight years later, Alvin and Lois were married and became synagogue members; and it has been a place of connection for them and their family ever since.

The family values its relationships with Rabbis Schwartz and Saroken.

Alvin and Lois Lapidus have created a Center for Healing and Spirituality that will offer unique experiences to both the synagogue community and the community at large. The tenor of the Center and its purpose are to offer compelling programs to people who want to experience growth, rejuvenation and emotional wellbeing. Other features will focus on attracting younger people to encourage meeting and connection with one another.

Their three daughters, Caryn Corenblum, Nancy L. Oring and Dr. Simone L. Cohen, attended Beth El schools, celebrated their B’not Mitzah here and were Beth El brides. All three daughters are enthusiastic supporters of this initiative and are inspired and committed to the Center’s unfolding purpose and vision.

Alvin and Lois hope the Center will be a welcoming beacon, available to those who yearn for personal growth and/or face problems, whether they’re financial, emotional, loss, illness, or any number of family issues. The couple envisions a Center that will help and inspire positive results for its constituents.

Book Review: Killing a King by Dan EphronThis non-fiction book provides a riveting account of the assassination of Israel’s Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. This death remains the single most consequential event in Israel’s recent history and one that fundamentally altered the trajectory for both Israel and the Palestinians. Killing a King relates the parallel stories of Rabin and his assassin Yigal Amir. It traces their lives during the two years leading up to the assassination as one of them planned political deals he hoped would lead to peace and the other plotted murder.

Dan Ephron, who reported from the Middle East for two decades, covered both the rally where Rabin was killed and the murder trial of Yigal Amir. He describes clearly and concisely Rabin’s efforts to resolve the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians and reveals what led Amir to commit his murder of the Prime Minister. Ephron recounts in detail how the extremists on both sides undermined the peace process with ghastly violence and he reconstructs the relentless scheming of Amir. The book also exposes how the agency charged with safeguarding Rabin missed key clues, overlooked intelligence reports and failed to protect him at a critical moment.

Killing a King has been designated as a Notable Book of 2015 by the New York Times. It will keep your attention because it is vividly written and presents an insightful narrative. As you read it, you are reminded that sometimes an assassin’s bullet really can alter the course of history and it will make you ponder what Israel would be like today if Rabin had lived.

If you glance at the Beth El Sisterhood Gift Shop windows, your next step will be to walk in so you can take a closer look at the beautiful items on display. Our buyers have been to the famed New York Gift Show with the Beth El Congregation in mind. There are wonderful offerings for Passover, such as Kiddush cups of every size and design, Miriam cups to adorn your table, as well as beautiful serving dishes and containers. Matzah plates and covers are yours for the asking. We have a variety of unique gifts for both adults and children and, as always, the magnificent tallit for those anticipating B’nai Mitzvot along with a variety of unusual jewelry. Stop in early so you can have first choice of the amazing things that fill our shelves.

May MeetingThe Beth El Seniors will be holding their next meeting on Sunday, May 15, 2016, in the Myers Auditorium, at 6:30 p.m. The cost for this dinner is $21.00 for members and $24.00 for guests. Shannon Wollman will provide entertainment for this evening. Reservations and payments for the evening are due no later than April 30, 2016. Please advise us if you would like a sugar-free dessert and with whom you wish to be seated. The seating committee will do its best to accommodate your seating wishes. Please try to get your reservations in on time. Mark envelope: Ruthye. Come join us and bring some friends along with you. We offer an entertaining, inexpensive evening, dinner, entertainment and friendly company. Who could ask for anything more? It’s even cheaper than Restaurant Week. Join us and we won’t be strangers anymore. For further information, call Ruthye Steinberg at 410-655-8242 or Maxine Kontoff at 410-486-1653.

MembershipBeth El Seniors is always welcoming new members 50 years of age or older to join our active organization. Dues are still only $15.00 per person per year, plus monthly dinner and enjoyable entertainment at the ridiculously low cost of $21.00 per member. Where else can you get such a deal?

Call Ruthye Steinberg at 410-655-8242 for a membership application.

Torah Maintenance CardsA project of the Beth El Seniors is to support the care and repair of our synagogue’s Torahs and Megillot. A kosher, usable Torah must be written by hand with a pen and special ink by a learned scribe. Every letter must be perfectly formed and every word must be correctly spelled. The ink cannot be chipped off even a little bit. The parchment on which the Torah is written must be flawless. The slightest tear or smudge will render the Torah unfit for use. The Beth El Torahs are regularly inspected and repaired. This is a costly process. It is a mitzvah to contribute to a process that keeps our sacred scrolls preserved for future generations. Torah Maintenance Cards may be purchased at the Beth El front office or call Dorothy Fineblum at 410-653-2631. These all-purpose cards are six for $10.00 or $2.00 each.

We will hold meetings on Sunday April 17, Sunday, May 22, and Sunday, June 26, all at 9:45 a.m to discuss upcoming events and plan the calendar for next year. We will not have a gathering in July or August, but at the June meeting, we will publish our schedule through June 2017.

We have committed to continuing the great tradition we started this past year with the Steak in the Sukkah with the Rabbi as our marquee annual event. Subject to confirmation from Beth El, the tentative date for this event will be on Wednesday, October 19, from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. If you attended this past year, you know why we are continuing this new tradition. The event was absolutely amazing. Nearly 50 men, three types of steak, an education in three to four types of scotch, along with tastings, honoring Rabbi Schwartz and celebrating The Men’s Club in the Sukkah! If you were unable to attend, mark your calendar now for this amazing event!

The Men’s Club is establishing its presence as a monthly gathering where Beth El’s men can hang out and enjoy each other’s company. We will have a few large brunches during the course of the year, and we will have far more gatherings of different shapes and sizes to learn more about each other, our careers, and how we can help each other throughout our lives.

This is your Men’s Club, and you are going to love it! Attend what you can, when you can. We will work hard to give you advance notice, and/or last minute notice. We will have a presence on Beth El’s email updates, website, Voice, Shofar, and Facebook.

As always, we thrive on all feedback from everyone, so please, don’t be shy and give us your thoughts!

Finally, we would love if each and every one of you could send me a quick email, telling me what topic you would enjoy sharing with other guys at a monthly gathering. Suggestions could include some aspects of your life you want to share with others, something about your background, about your career, or my favorite, some aspect of your life that you could share with others by way of networking or mentoring. We have so much to share, so many ways to help each other.

Yours in brotherhood,

Harry Siegel, Beth El Men’s Club President [email protected]

Adult Education Offers Another Successful Year of Programming At a recent Shiva home, the comment was made about how proud Rabbi Loeb would be if he could see the current schedule of Adult Education classes being offered at Beth El. This whole year has been filled with a myriad of different programming and week after week, we are delighted to see so many people being inspired by our Adult Education Program. Whether a packed house for the Agus Academy, or a Scholar in Residence weekend that crossed the generations, the Adult Education Committee works tirelessly dreaming up creative ideas and implementing them. This year, Mah Jongg has been a success, as has Jewish Mysticism and Qu’ranic Theology. The diversity of our offerings can compete with a college course catalogue, and we are always looking for recommendations for new topics. For more information on Adult Education programs, please contact Ellen Marks at [email protected] or 410-580-5166.

Agus Academy Spring SessionClose Encounters of an Unusual Kind Join Rabbi Dana Saroken on Mondays, April 18, 25, May 2, and 9 for close reading of biblical texts and midrash about some of the most well-known and some of the lesser known characters in Tanakh. Rabbi Saroken’s discussion, “The Imahot - Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah; What makes these women so great?” takes place in the Agus Library from 7:00 – 8:15 p.m. There is no charge for this series.

Evening Book Club for Men and WomenTuesday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m.Jill Eisen, Director of Outreach and Assistant Principal, Beth El Schools, will lead a discussion on The Art Forger by B. A. Shapiro. Coffee and snacks will be provided. For more information, contact Denise Franz at [email protected].

A Wing and A Prayer Wednesday, May 4, at 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.Celebrate Israel’s 68th birthday with the acclaimed documentary, A Wing and A Prayer. This tells the virtually unknown story of World War II aviators who risked their lives and freedom in 1948 to prevent what they viewed as an imminent second Holocaust. You will hear award-winning Boaz Dvir, the documentary’s writer, director, and producer. He will facilitate a discussion about the courageous pilots who flew this mission and others who were part of this remarkable quest. Mr. Dvir secured exclusive, once-in-a-lifetime interviews with the operation’s mastermind and secretive leader, Al Schwimmer, who went on to create and run Israel Aerospace Industries; chief pilot, Sam Lewis, who went on to help launch El Al, and Christian radio operator and crew leader Eddie Styrak.

Enjoy a dessert reception following the documentary and panel discussion. This program is in collaboration with the Macks Center for Jewish Education.

You are invited to sponsor this special evening as an individual ($54) or for your business ($108). This evening’s sponsors are invited to meet with Boaz Dvir at a reception preceding the screening at 6:15 p.m.

New Program Project Atid Teaches Lessons About American-Jewish IdentityThe 7th grade students in the Berman-Lipavsky Religious School are having a transformative year as the pioneering cohort in Project Atid. Project Atid is a collaborative endeavor between Beth El and Chizuk Amuno. It aims to bring relevant and engaging learning about American Jewish identity and responsibility to our students at the same time when they are approaching Bar/Bat Mitzvah and their own ideas about Jewish identity are forming. Project Atid begins with a look at the foundations of America, our founding fathers, and sacred American documents such as the Declaration of Independence and Constitution to explore the Jewish influences and themes that are clearly present. It is the perfect time to explore American – Jewish identity, since most of our students in their public schools are learning about the foundations of America as well.

During the second part of the year, our students learn about Jewish immigration to America. They study the pogroms, the choices faced by Jews fleeing Europe, and what happened upon arriving in America.

The year finishes with a unit on Social Justice, and the Jewish obligation to be an upstander in the community. These units are multi-sensory and include a day long retreat in cities such as Philadelphia, NYC and Washington DC. The Atid students also participated in three classrooms without walls seminars, including an amazing Shabbat dinner at Chizuk Amuno where they had the opportunity to become immigrant children in the Lower East Side of New York City.

Project Atid is being funding by a grant from the Blaustein Foundation. Its impact on our students has been deeply felt,

as students are eager to make connections between their secular and Jewish worlds. Many of our Atid students have already told us they will be joining us again next year in Achshav!

19The Voice of Beth El Congregation

By Debbie Abrams, The Buzz Agency

Beth El members since 1948, Lou and Edith Bluefeld celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on February 23. Louis is 95 and Edith is 94.

The couple met at 16 and has been inseparable ever since. Lou’s family owned a Kosher catering business in Baltimore, Maryland and he worked in the business all the time as a teen. He told Edith that if she wanted to see him, she would have to come work beside him in the business, so she did.

Their catering business, Bluefeld Caterers—The Orchid Touch, was responsible for Koshering the White House kitchen during the announcement of the Peace Accords under President Jimmy Carter. This was the first time a Kosher meal had ever been served at the White House. They also catered all the food for Menachim Begin while he was in Washington, D.C. the week of the Peace Accords announcement.

They even catered President Nixon’s Inaugural Ball and events for Congressmen and Senators. Everyone in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. used Bluefeld Caterers for their affairs, even though the food was Kosher, because it was considered the best catering in the city at that time.

The Bluefelds now live in Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, Florida. A number of their former customers live in the community, as well.

“We never took deposits. Our business was built on trust. And it was never just another wedding. We knew how much each event meant to our customers,” Lou Bluefeld said. Lou presented unsigned contract after unsigned contract to demonstrate how the business was built on a handshake.

Lou and Edith’s life together is a real love story. When Lou was 19, his mother asked him what his intentions were. He told his mother he didn’t have the money to get married and she told him not to worry about it. His mother put on a beautiful wedding for them, with her favorite flowers, orchids, everywhere. His mother died suddenly later that year.

During World War II, Edith traveled for three days by train across the country to say goodbye to Lou when he shipped out from California. And, when the war ended, Lou stood in line for nine hours to send a radiogram to Edith with details on when he would be coming home.

Lou and Edith, along with his brother Philip and sister-in-law Ethel, dedicated the Bluefeld Chapel in memory of Charles and Betsy Bluefeld (Louis and Philip’s parents) in 1960.

Both Edith and Lou have been active volunteers at Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, Florida where they live. Even at 94, Edith still organizes luncheons for her building. Lou says he’s become a bum, playing cards several days a week.

Lou said, “We’re so thankful we’re both well. More and more, health means everything and money is nothing.”

When asked about the most important life lesson this vibrant 95 year-old could pass on, Lou said that his father always told him that, “Namen is everything” —your good name is what is most important.
