Hello and welcome to our Spring Issue I say “Spring” ... more like Winter. My kids think its

Christmas again with all the snow blizzards we’ve had recently, and are hoping Santa will turn up again!

Hopefully, when you are reading this, it will be nice and warm, with the daffs and tulips blossoming in your gardens.

We have introduced a new feature to our magazine and will continue with this over the next few months. We are proud to be supporting our Local Independent Retailers, and we want the public to know all about them. They are not just a nameless, faceless person at the other side of the counter; these people are your neighbours, your friends and perhaps your family. All following their dreams of workingforthemselvesandbuildingafuture.Wefindoutwho they are, what their aspirations are, and what they love most about being in business for themselves. Hopefully this willraisetheprofileoftheseuniqueshops,orlittlegemsaswe like to call them.

Most consumers are thinking more about how much they spend, and a high percentage of those people go to the big supermarkets, and spend all their hard earned cash on food, drink, cards, clothes, electrical goods, you name it they’ve got it! Even holidays these days..... All we are trying to do, is make you think harder about where you spend your money. Lets help Bingley grow as a town. Bingley History - A Photographic TimelineIn previous editions of MyCommunityHub we have presented a collage of photographs of Main Street. These are intended to capture the changes (or not) which have taken place to some notable landmarks (past and present) in Bingley over the last 120 or so years.

This month shows the development of one section of Main Street from the Fleece Hotel looking down towards the Old White Horse, Old Main Street, the Parish Church and Keighley RoadChangesThe StrandTheFleece(alsoatonetimeanExciseOffice)

stands at the bottom of Main Street in an area once known as The Strand. The Strand Stores (102 Main Street) owned by Thomas Hemmant was one of the most popular groceries in the area particularly for its selection of cheeses and Bingley Blend Tea.. Millgate

Millgate, and the junction leading over Ireland Bridge towards Harden was previously signposted as the Halifax - Haworth Road and was a Turnpike Road during the 1800’s. Elizabeth Downsbrough in her book Bingley’s Historic Pubs (2011) records that when a suggestion about the widening of the road leading to Ireland Bridge was made to the Bingley Improvement Commissioners, comment

was made that “the road could easily be widened if Mr Ferrand could only pull down the White Horse Inn, which would be no loss to the town”. Luckily for generations of pub- goers since, this idea was not adopted!Old Main Street

The Improvement Commissioners in proposing widening of Main Street in the 1880’s had to however take account of the dangerous state of Old Main Street. The Keighley News of 3rd September 1904 reported:

“ Because of building the new road with a length of 270 yards and a width of 30 yards and being perfectly straight, all the dangers of the old road with its dangerous curve past the Church are avoided”The New Road

The building of the new road (which took nearly two years), was however not without its problems...bothphysicalandfinancial.Thenewrouteoftheroadrequiredtheremovalofnearly2500bodiesfrom the church graveyard which necessitated the passing of a Local Act in 1901 to enable this to happen.

Additionally the eventual cost to Bingley Urban District Council was nearly £14000, more than half of which was needed to buy or demolish properties on Old Main Street and to purchase a portion of the graveyard. The new road opened in 1904.

As April comes, spring is here and snow! Now will be the time to look for summer migrants, which haveflownfromAfrica.

Down on the reserve I have beenlookingforourfirstofthesummer migrants. The Chiffchaff this warbler is like most of our warblers drab compared with some of the other warblers seen elsewhere in the world.

But the mono tone call of chiff-chaff- chiff-chiffchaff raises the heart as this heralds the start of spring. Our chiffchaff normally turns up to and around the 17th March so far no sign due to the snow we encountered at the end of March.

How do you know you have a chiffchaff in your garden? Easy listen for the song then look for the bird, the bird itself is small and the upper parts of the bird are olive brown the underside (belly) is white-ish.

The Chiffchaff has a fairly distinguishable eyebrow (eye stripe). The legs are black as is the beak. It has short wings but

to put the spanner in the works you have to be careful when seeing a none singing chiffchaff.

If you come across a similar looking bird but are yellowish and with brownish looking legs you may have found a willow warbler itssongisflutyandappearstogo down the scales.

The willow warbler as longer wings than the chiffchaff. Both are very common throughout the UK. If any of these birds arrived at the back end of March they will have had a shock with all the snow. Both these birds are migrants so will be leaving our shores in autumn.

With the weather conditions that we have had this may put the nesting season back so

putting more pressure on the birds to raise a brood faster than normally would be done.

At this time of year you should also look out for ladybirds and later in the month if it warms up thefirstdamselfliesoftheyear.These we will be looking at next month.

Meanwhile why not come down to the reserve and see if you can spot the chiffchaff or the willow warbler.

at the homing centre. We are pleased to be working with such

a fantastic charity, which helps re-home unwanted cats in our

region.

Gwen’s storyHello, Remember me? I’m Gwen and in the last edition of Community Hub I told you all about the way Yorkshire Cat Rescue saved the lives of me and my two little babies last summer.

This month I am going to tell you about Cat Whispering, and how going through the process at YCR turned me from a frightened feral to a lazy lap cat.

Yorkshire Cat Rescue don’t put many cats through their Cat Whispering process as it is very time intensive and for a short period of time means that the cat has to be containedinaverysmallarea.That’sfineforkittens-andtheytameupquitequickly-but for adults it takes much longer.

In my case, the original plan was for me to be neutered and then go and live on a stables or farm, but whilst I was raising my kittens, the volunteers and staff at YCR began to interact with me and I got used to having people around.

So, I was taken into a house and put into a big cage where I had a covered bed, and where I could feelsafe.IcoweredatfirstbutgraduallyIcametorealise that all the strange sounds I could hear were not going to hurt me, and I even enjoyed watching the drum turning in the washing machine.

Whilst I was getting used to being indoors, the volunteers and staff used their eyes to tell me that they were safe. They didn’t stare, they blinked slowly and they didn’t look directly at me. In cat language, eyes are very important - we use them to make our feelings known - fear, intimidation, safety - by staring or blinking.

By slow-blinking at me, the staff and volunteers told me they were safe and I slow-blinked back at them to tell them I too was safe and not scared of them.

The next step was for me to get used to “hands”. Handsareprettyscarythingsatfirstbutthestaffand volunteers used their hands to give me special cattreats,andquitesoonIbegantorealisethathands could be nice things. After a few days of lovely treats, I found myself looking forward to hands, and I began to sniff them and then dared myself to rub my

chin against the hands. It felt good and the hands gently tickled me as I rubbed, which was lovely.

Once I’d got to know hands, hands decided to get to know me, and began to stroke me behind my ears and on my head. I knew it was safe because the eyes which belonged to the hands’ body were still doing lots of slow blinking at me.Thefinalstageofmyrehabilitationwasforme

tomoveintotheoffice,whereIcouldfindlotsof hidey places but could also integrate with the staff.Atfirsttheyignoredme,notmeetingmyeyes at all, but after a few days I got fed up of this and started to play and to approach people. That’s when it got to be really nice as I got lots of strokes, treats and fun games of ball and chase.

It took me a lot of courage, and a lot of hard work on the part of the volunteers and staff, but it was worth it in the end. I am now so happy in my new home, I lie on my back - something that cats only do when they feel really really safe - something that I wouldn’t ever have considered before I went through the cat whispering programme.

Pack of Hounds at St Ives - 1859 (from Ward (2002) - W B Ferrand the Working Mans’s Friend 1809 - 1889)

In 1857 William Ferrand, always interested in country activity, purchased and started his own pack of hounds for StIves,hisestate.Thepackmetforthefirsttimein1859atHarden.

Ward (2002) records that in 1859 Ferrand paid tax on a butler, a footman, a groom, two keepers, two gardeners, two carriages, a pony carriage, a cab, 36 hounds, two setters, two springers a pointer, three saddle horses and his armorial bearings.

Like many who started their own pack, Ferrand possibly foundtheupkeepofthepacktooexpensive.Consequentlyhe gave up hunting on his own account but was a regular participant in the Bramham and Belvoir hunts.

Interesting to Anglers - May 1885“A case of considerable interest to anglers was heard at Keighley County Court yesterday when the Bingley Local Board were sued by Mr William Ferrand of St Ives, Bingley for £50 damages for the pollution of Harden Beck, a trout stream known to many Yorkshire anglers.

It was alleged that the defendants turned a quantity of sewerage on adjacent land for irrigation, but that a great deal of sewerage found its way into the stream and rendered the beck worthless for trout breeding”

“On Saturday, a large number of members of the Bradford Conservative Association accompanied by friends visited St Ives, Bingley, the seat of Mr B Ferrand. The park and other grounds were thrown open for their recreation and amusement and several agreeable hours were spent.

Dancing to the music of a brass band helped while away the time, whilst others rambled in the beautifully wooded park and amongst the well-kept grounds nearer the residence. Lord John Manners, the Postmaster General and his lady were present as the guests of Mr Ferrand.”

Harden Pharmacy based in the village of Harden, just on the outskirts of Bingley, is co-owned by three friends, Adnaan, Shahbab and Qaiser. All born and bred in Bradford, they met at Bradford University whilst studying their Pharmacy Degrees.

When they finished their degrees, they went their separate ways, working for some of the larger Pharmacies in the country, but all with the same dream of opening up their own someday, in Bradford.

The eventually got their heads together and decided to do it. They did some research and found that there was a potential to have a pharmacy in Harden. After many meetings, they forwarded their case to the NHS, and it was approved. In 2009 Adnaan, Shahbab and Qaiser opened their first pharmacy in the Post Office building. This was the first of many steps to fulfill their dream, something they had worked very hard for.

When I met Adnaan, I asked him why Harden, he said “Harden is a lovely village, with two doctors surgeries in the neighbouring villages, and two pharmacies, which belong to a large chain. We felt that Harden was perfect for a small independent pharmacy and there was a gap in the market”.

By 2010, they were excited to find out that a building across the road became available. And so began the next step in their dream building. Within a few weeks, Harden Pharmacy had taken a prime spot in the village, serving the residents of Harden and beyond.

a bit nervous or unwell? By wearing a yellow ribbon on your doggies lead or a yellow bandana round

his neck, you are showing other dog owners that your dog needs some

space.

So what is the Yellow Dog Project?

The Yellow Dog Project was created to bring awareness to dogs who need space while training, recovering from surgery, or being rehabilitated.

How does it work? If you see a dog with a YELLOW ribbon,

bandanna or similar on the leash or on the dog, this is a dog which needs some space. Please, do not approach this dog or its people with your dog. They are indicating that their dog cannot be close to other dogs. How close is too close? Only the dog or his people know, so maintain distance and give them time to move out of your way.

Why might a dog need space?There are many reasons why a dog may need space:

• Maybe it has health issues • It may be a rescue dog being

rehabilitated. The world can be a very scary place for these dogs.

• It may have had a bad experience with another dog or is just not like the kind of friendly dogs which always want to say “Hi!”• A bitch may be in heat• The dog may be in training• It may be very old and arthritic

• It may be very nervous or shy and other dogs cause it stress

History behind Yellow Dog UK Yellow Dog UK was started in November 2012

as part of the international Gulahund Yellow Dog Campaign which was originally launched in Sweden. Yellow Dog UK became the UK Ambassadors for this and launched the website and facebook pages around the same time as Discover Dogs at Earls Court in November 2012. The response and feedback was amazing.

They now have 8000 people who have liked their page on facebook and they sell ribbons, bandanas, dog vests, and promotional materials as well as running a sponsorship progamme.

The Yellow Dog UK Campaign is sweeping the nation and is a very simple idea to give some dogs the space they need. The campaign is internationally running and now covers around 20 countries.
