SO…SO MUCH CAPITAL
Demographics Pop. 104,655 (6 th largest in WA) 49% females 25.4% people of color 20.2% Bachelor’s or higher $47,491 median household
income 16.9% in poverty
Crime Rates Twice as much property crime
as national average 2010 had twice the rate of
rapes than national average Most dangerous city in NW
aside from Tacoma, statistically Boeing relocation USS Abraham Lincoln ticker-
tape parades (no more..) Desolation of paper mill, no
more stinky egg smell
Social/Human Capital
Diversity leaves something to be desired
Crime rates are appalling for a city that is as “developed” as Everett Needs more anti-crime
community programs, rehabilitation for convicts released from County Jail
It’s interesting to see such rallying for local produce and art juxtaposed with moderately large gaps in social services
There are still neighborhoods in desperate need of community intervention
Fragmented community, no real sense of connection to one another
Assessment
Conversations We often put down our
community Crime rates and the majority of
neighborhoods are not in good shape
There is a wide consensus that Everett is trashy and that is often the focus of discussion
Environmental issues Sustainable farming Marine life conservation & clean-
up Conservation parks
Accountability “Operation Warm” firefighters
donate coats to school kids “Meet Your Farmer” school
program Arsenic clean-up Annual field trips to Jetty
Island to eradicate invasive species
Focus on gifts: “community is built by focusing on people’s gifts rather than their defi ciencies” (p. 12). Everett needs to improve
focusing on the city’s gifts rather than on the deficiencies Too much focus is placed on
the deficiencies of at-risk neighborhoods and on crime rates
The “mask” of Everett can be used to address community deficiencies Increasing population = bigger
economy Government service hub; guide
at-risk members to needed services
Community involvement through art and farming

Even though it is highly diverse, Boston is still heavily segregated Don’t go past Columbus…
The poverty level is saddening considering the financial capital of Boston
Inclusivity is undermined by the fact that Boston is consumed by the Irish and baseball fans Of the three days where
bikes are prohibited on subways, 2 of them are St. Patrick’s Day and any Red Sox home game
