SPECIAL PROJECTS: THE IONIAN

Article Samples Cross Country: On the very last day of October, the men’s team

was able to take home the MAAC Championship for the 25th straight time in their remarkable history. The men flat out dominated on the day, topping out at a perfect score of 15 and finishing the race light years ahead of second place Marist. The team received a boost from basically everyone who participated, with the first seven finishers all being members of Iona College. The winner of the race was graduate student Michael O’Dowd, whose final line read at 23:44.3.

Description: wrote and published articles for the sports section of Iona College’s newspaper, “The Ionian.” Majority of articles were written about the men’s baseball team and the men’s water polo team. Baseball: This positive attitude has kept the

Gaels afloat in recent weeks, allowing them to take five of their past seven games coming off the heels of the long losing streak. Although the team has hit several bumps in the road on the way to their overall 7-20 record (3-4 in the MAAC) there is still plenty of ball left to play in this NCAA season. And this recent hot streak is definitely a push in the right direction. Said Stafford, “I believe we'll keep winning games as long as we maintain the mindset we have.”

SPECIAL PROJECTS: RESEARCH PAPER, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS AND “DEFLATEGATE”Description: Wrote a 35 page research paper, attempting to prove if the NFL unfairly targets the New England Patriots in an outlandish effort to create media attention and publicity. Also deeply analyzed the “Deflategate” scandal which featured Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady being put on trial for supposedly cheating during the AFC Championship game. Paper includes clear sources and a breakdown of various issues across the National Football League.

Samples from Research Paper The Patriots are seen as a team loaded with controversy, primarily in the last ten to

fifteen years. Coincidentally, this is also the same time frame in which New England can be considered the best team in the sport, having won four Super Bowls since 2000. But recent scandals such as “Spygate” and “Deflategate” have led to the team being embroiled in tumultuous accusations. This has made them the target of ESPN, but while the Patriots are certainly worthy of this coverage, they’re the only team that ESPN puts this much effort into covering.

“We destroyed the tapes five months ago because I felt it was important for everyone to follow my instructions and I did not want those tapes to be out there” (Cimini). This is an incredibly vague statement as Goodell offered no real reason for destroying the tapes. Senator Specter was immediately dissatisfied with Goodell’s decision to destroy the videoed evidence, leading to him publishing his own report on the matter. It was in this report that Senator Specter had claimed that the NFL may have been guilty of creating a “cover-up” for the Spygate situation (O’Keefe – New York Daily News). Specter claimed that the NFL’s investigation into Spygate was “fatally flawed” and that New England had been filming and cheating for years.

What began to progress afterwards was a series of confusing reports and many people labeling the Deflategate controversy as being ridiculous and completely overblown. Nevertheless, this was the story leading up to the Super Bowl, in fact it basically became a bigger story then the Super Bowl itself. Chip Scoggins, writer for the Star-Tribune, was particularly angered by this which he made clear in his article “Isn’t it about time to get pumped up for the game?” Scoggins writes that the situation was laughable and he makes an excellent point when he compares Deflategate to other NFL scandals, “This isn't Ray Rice punching out his wife in an elevator, or the New Orleans Saints' bounty scandal from a few years ago. This latest "gate" just seems minor compared to some of the other troubling stories we've witnessed around the league in recent years (Scoggins – Star Tribune).”
