Katra, or the search for an environmently

With Katra, the studio Aparte leads an experiment on the use of a
composite incorporating natural fibers, reducing the ecological impact ofstrong materials usually mixing a resin and a reinforcing fiber. The fiber
used in this process comes from a variety of nettle, the ramie, which hasmechanical properties comparable or superior to glass fiber, particularly in
terms of resistance. Remains unsolved the problem of the resin used, andespecially the recycling at the end of life, but it is still better than
nothing!

A very simple idea, just as we like them... The Stadtlabor office hasdecided to create an interesting façade for the Kletterhalle Vertikale
building, an indoor climbing center based in the North of Italy. They uses
perforated and creased aluminium panels to create a net (matériO M-0515), so that the building becomes a changing monolith. Indeed, during
the day, the façade is massive and opaque when looked at from the
outside. It also plays its important role of sun shade while remaining
transparent from the inside (matériO R-1354). During the night, on thecontrary, the net disappears, the façade becomes transparent, revealing
the climbing 15-meters high training wall.

A nice project from Indonesian designer Max Gunawan, smartly using the
laser cutting process in order to bring flexibility to the plywood cover
(matériO O-0936), also using a white LED source, a polyethylene veryresistant non-woven material looking like paper (matériO P-0056), and a
super-strong magnet (matériO M-0002).
Lumio is simple, elegant and intuitive. The book lights up when opened,
intensity varies with more or less opening, several positions are possible...up to creating a cylindrical lamp.

Here is a clever use of the expanded polypoprylene (matériO R1188), acousin of the expanded polystyrene (matériO R0783) : INFINI is a module
of shelves which follows your needs. Infinite combinations are possible,
infinite lightness as a set of 8 modules only weights 20 kg. But it's above
all the fact that EPP is recyclable that makes it desirable. Under heat, EPP
becomes fluid and can be shaped again. EPP was first used as an industrial
material, cheap, light and stable but designers are recently taking interest
in using it.

Stereolithographic Ceramic
Based on the laser stereolithography, the ceramic 3D printing technology
is used for rapid prototyping and production. It enables layer-by-layerprocessing to produce ceramic components. The UV laser beam
polymerizes the paste made of photosensitive resin and ceramic. The resin
is removed by heat treatment and ceramic is densified to 100%.
This process doesn’t break the digital chain. The produced components
have the same properties as those obtained by pressing
or injection. By doing away with the need to create a mold, the process
can be used to produce just about any shape, even complex. Ceramic isunalterable, hypoallergenic and provides silk touch aspect. It is more
robust than most of the surface treatments currently on the market.
These qualities, its similarity with onyx or mother of pearl, depending on
selected mass coloration, or a polished / mirror finish, also quickly
attracted interest from renowned jewelers and watchmakers.

Bakelite is a thermosetting polymer. It is in fact a trade mark rather than a
chemical name. Bakelite is one of a family of phenol formaldehyde resins
and is the first syn thetic polymer to have emerged, in the 1900s. Named
by its ‘discoverer’ Belgian chemist, Leo Baekeland. It remains one of the
best thermosetting plastics but is today often replaced by other less
expensive polymers. From the beginning, its electrical insulation and heatre sistance properties made it very popular for telephone casings,
electrical plugs and switches, gears, kitchen utensils (casserole handles),
toys and jewellery. Its age is now starting to give it a certain charm with
numerous Bakelite objects exhibited in ‘design’ galleries and an tique
shops as ‘collectables’.
Hard, durable, with high mechanical strength, it is still in use today in
domestic electrical appliances, electron ics and aerospace. It used to beseen as ashtrays on café tables.This resin is formed into three dimensional
shapes by thermocompression in steel moulds.
It exists in the form of ‘Bakelised’ paper plates, Bake lite coatings were
used for the first electrical and elec tronic circuit boards. Wood can also
be ‘bakelised’. As a result it becomes a composite material with very high
strength, used in mechanics (pinions, shafts, etc.) or to make high‐
precision models.

A transparent photovoltaic film31 07 2012
American researchers from UCLA are currently developing a new type of
photovolaic cell which has the great advantage of remaining completely
transparent. A polymer film with titanium dioxide and silver nano-threads
allow a 4% efficiency with 70% transparency (it primarily captures theenergy from the infrared). Obviously, this polymer film cannot compete in
terms of performance with conventional crystalline cells (20% for themost efficient opaque cells), but its transparency offers many applications
on windows, in the automotive industry, or even as a coating on smallelectronic devices, just like this film (matériO R1741).

Transparent cement
There's only a small step from darkness to light ! A new type of cementhas been set up which, by bonding special resins into a newly conceived
mix, allows manufacturing solid insulated yet light-transmittingconstruction panels. The excellent flow properties of the mix allowbonding a plastic resin matrix into a final panel that combines the
typical robustness of cement-made materials and the possibility offiltering light both inwards and outwards.
The resins if adequately inserted in the cementitious material have highertransparency performance than the optical fibres experimentally used in
this field, but also cost much less allowing for their application on a largescale.

People Architecture Office to take care of their interior design. Playing
with the 3 primary colors, glass transparency and overlapping possibilities,the architects multiplied the different ways of seing the interior of the
building.

Flexible solid wood
Bendywood® is solid wood that can be worked like normal wood and thenbent in a cold and dry condition (without using steam or heat). In most
cases, Bendywood® can easily be bent by hand. The secret? Bendywood®is produced in an entirely natural way according to a special mechanical
process, starting from still green solid wood blocks that are compressedlengthwise for about 20% and subsequently dried. In this way, the cells ofthe wood are also compressed (like an accordion), which allows them to
straighten out again during the bending on the outside of the bendwithout getting into tension and breaking.

Concrete and glass beads
This material is made using ultra-high performance fibre-reinforced
concrete with glass beads in the surface. Light plays on them and theappearance seems to change with the viewing angle. It picks up light andchanges colour like a chameleon.• It keeps all mechanical an physics characteristics (Compression resistance, natural waterproof quality, ...).
