Penalties stiff for writing bad checks

By Maj. A.E. Turbyfill Joint Legal Service Center

Lance corp- oral is sentenced by a General Court Martial to be confined at hard labor for three years; to forfeit all pay and allowances; to be reduced to private; and to be discharged with a Dishonor- able Discharge.

A private is sentenced by a General Court Martial to be confined at hard labor for two years; to forfeit all pay and allowances; and to be discharged with a Dishonor- able Discharge.

A private first class is sentenced by a General Court Martial to be confined at hard labor for eight months; to be discharged with a Bad Conduct Discharge; to forfeit all pay and allowances; to be reduced to private; and to pay a fine of $1,500 with up to an additional six months con- finement to be served if the fine is not paid.

Another private first class is sentenced by a General Court Martial to be confined at hard labor for eight months; to forfeit all pay and allowances; to be reduced to private; and to be discharged with a Bad Conduct Dis- charge.

It would appear that there Marines must have engaged in some serious criminal mis- conduct. They did! Each of them was court martialed for writing worthless checks.

Article 123(a) of the Uni- form Code of Military Justice prohibits the making and negotiating of worthless checks. The maximum pun- ishment for passing a single worthless check for an amount in excess of $100 includes confinement at hard labor for five years; total forfeiture of all pay and allowances; reduction to pri- vate and a Dishonorable Discharge.

A single worthless check for an amount less than $100 is punishable by confine- ment at hard labor for six months, total forfeiture of all pay and allowances, reduc- tion to private and a Bad Conduct Discharge.

Writing and passing worthless checks is a serious criminal offense. Such con- duct, in addition to having a serious adverse effect on a Marine's career can result in a court martial and severe criminal penalties. A Marine who knowingly writes a worthless check is no differ- ent from a Marine who steals money or property. The pen- alties for writing a worthless check are identical to the penalties for stealing money or property of the same value.

In the past two months, six Marines from the Air Station have been tried by court martial for writing worthless checks. They are all now in the Pearl Harbor brig.

Bronze Star arrives 22 years later for former Marine now with FBI By SSgt.Ray Tademy Jr.

MCDEC, Quantico, Va. - Robert Rogers stood proudly as LtGen. Frank E. Petersen, commanding general, here, pinned a Bronze Star medal on his coat ... a moment that was 22 years overdue.

The medal was earned by the 46-year-old former Marine captain while he served as a platoon corn- mander in Vietnam.

Rogers didn't spend the last two decades waiting for this moment, he spent the time cultivating the ideals that worked for him in com- bat - ideals, he feels, earned him the Bronze Star Medal and have since become the cornerstone of his life.

The evening ceremony brought back memories of men who had trained in the deserts of California; the jungle brush on Okinawa; and the mountains of Japan - men who were members of one of the first two Marine units sent to action in Vietnam.

"I served with Marines who never backed off from themselves," said Rogers, who is now a program man- ager for the FBI Academy's physical fitness program.

"They had a tremendous sense of duty and responsi- bility. I was privileged to work with them, and proud to be their platoon com- mander."

Rogers' Marine experience began three months after he graduated from Notre Dame University in 1962. He com- pleted the Officer Candi- dates Course, here, in December of that same year and The Basic School in June 1963. He was assigned to the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, and was serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marine Regi- ment, when it was reas- signed to Okinawa and became 1/3.

"We trained in the North-

Robert Rogers, program manager for the FBI Academy's physical fitness program, received the Bronze Star Medal during an evening ceremony 22 years after he earned it.

em Training Area of Okin- awa and in Camp Fuji, Japan," said the Rockaway Beach, N.Y., native. "We were one of the first Marine units to deploy to Vietnam, along with the 9th Marines, from March to October 1965."

By then, they had trained together about a year and knew each other very well; from the fire teams to the commanders, according to Rogers. "Everything we emphasized during training came to fruition in Viet- nam," he said.

In Vietnam, Rogers was a first lieutenant who, accord- ing to his cita- tion," ... aggressively led his Marines on numerous pla- toon and company-size patrols, ambushes and search and clear operations. As a result of his continued efforts toward training, members of his platoon inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy."

Receiving the medal 22 years after the fact, because of administration setbacks,

didn't leave Rogers feeling bitter or forgotten. In the contrary, he welcomed the medal, no matter how long it took to receive it.

"It has come during a time of my life that makes it an overwhelming experi- ence, said Rogers." "It makes me think about what works in life - what mat- ters and what doesn't. It's going to help me for the rest of my life to not let the little things get to me,"

Today, Rogers believes his commitment to self, Corps and country, corn- bined with his training, made him an effective leader and helped him earn the Bronze Star. These same ideals carry, over into his current profession, he said, and its emphasis on physi- cal fitness; an interest which was sparked by the Marine Corps.

"The Marine Corps stresses physical fitness, and I emphasized it with my men," said Rogers. "I fig- ured that if you had a group of young Marines who could

outrun, outclimb, have a sharper perspective on things and maintain a calm- ness of temper and judge- ment, you would have a tough force to reckon with.

"I realized that if a person had a greater physical capacity, logic demanded that they had a greater capacity in other areas that made them better able to accomplish their mission," said Rogers.

Rogers believes these ideals also apply to law enforcement.

"The mission we have in law enforcement is compara- ble to the mission of the mil- itary on foreign shores," said Rogers."Here, we ensure domestic peace and tranquility within the United States."

Rogers believes the key to accomplishing this mission rests with the individual being the best he can be so that he can function better, professionally and person- ally. According to Rogers, the key to reaching this potential is physical fitness.

"The academy," he said,

"teaches fitness as a philos- ophy of challenge. We address fitness not only in the physical capacity, but as an overall philosophy of challenge that increases all other capacitites. That includes the emotional, intellectual and spiritual capacities," said Rogers.

"If we can get a person to challenge themselves physi- cally, and take themselves out of the comfort zone, that enhances their other inner capacities, Rogers com- mented." It will make them a stronger total person who can work toward accom- plishing their mission in a more viable, meaningful manner."

Rogers had tours of duty at MCRD. Parris Island, S.C.; as an officer selection officer at Hartford, Conn; and worked for a major cor- poration for a year and-a- half before joining the FBI.

"The corporation was a fine organization, but I missed the challenge and idealism of the Marine Corps and thought I could find it in the FBI." said Rog- ers, who has been with the FBI since 1969.

His assignments include duties as a firearms instruc- tor and service with Special Weapons and Tactics units in San Diego, Calif. He also studied Spanish at the Defense Language School in Monterey, Calif., and served as a liaison between Mexi- can and United States law enforcement authorities while he served with FBI offices in California.

He requested a transfer to Alexandria, Va., in 1978 so he could be closer to his wife, Didi, and daughters Jennifer, Natalie and Cris- tina. He has been with the FBI Academy since 1981.

"The nice thing with the FBI is that you always have the opportunity to come back to Quantico," said Rog- ers. For him, this is where it all began, This is where he first learned the ideals of the Corps and what it meant to be a Marine.

Out/in-patient care defined

What's the difference between outpatient and inpa- tient care?

Inpatient care is what you get when you're officially admitted to the hospital and stay overnight.

Active duty and retired military hospital or any other service medical facility. Their families get the same care from military facilities, but on a space-available basis. Or they may be treated at a civilian facility under CHAMPUS.

To get CHAMPUS to share the cost for outpatient care, there is no need to ask per- mission from the local mil- itary hosptial. However, it is best to ask the health care provider if he or she partic- ipates in the program, which means the amount CHAM- PUS says is reasonable is accepted as fully payment. In fact, a participating provider

may even file the claim for you.

If you get care from a pro- vider who does not partici- pate, you may end up paying more and will probably have to file the claim yours(31f. File the claim for cost-sharing of covered care with the CHAM- PUS claims processor for the state where you got the care.

CHAMPUS has an outpa- tient care deductible amount of $50 per person or $100 for the family in a fiscal year.

Even when you pay the first $50, include the total amount charged by the pro- vider on your claim form.

Military retirees, surviving family members of deceases active-duty or retired mil- itary and some former spouses are eligible for CHAMPUS - in addition to the families of active duty and retired military members.

Mortgage interest deductible AFIS - Service members

who receive tax-free housing allowances and who do not reside on a federal base will be permitted to deduct mort- gage interest and property taxes on their homes, the Internal Revenue Service announced recently.

This reverses a 1983 ruling that ministers could not deduct interest and taxes on a personal residence pur- chased with tax-free housing allowances. Although the 1983 ruling mentioned min- isters only, the question had arisen as to whether or not is applied to service members, since they, too, received a tax-free housing allowance.

The 1986 provision clari- fies this point by specifically

stating that service members (as well as ministers) are now permitted to deduct mortgage interest when receiving tax- free housing allowances.

The provision applies also to past tax years as well as current and future years.

If you did not claim mort- gage interest or property taxes on a tax return filed for

a previous year and claiming them now would mean less tax, file an amended return - Form 1040X. The amended return must be filed within three years from the date the original return was filed or two years from when you paid the tax, whichever is later.

500th Hornet delivered to the Marine Corps

St. Louis, Mo. - The 500th F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter built at McDonnel Douglas has been delivered to the Marine Corps.

Colonel Robert Pappas accepted the aircraft and flUvv it from St. Louis to Beaufort, S.C., where it will become part of VMFA-451.

i`Everything good you've

heard about this airplane is probably an understate- ment," said Pappas, who is a Vietnam veteran. "The Marines are very satisfied with the plane."

More than 600,000 parts from 2,100 subcontractors come together each time a single F/A-18 Hornet is

produced at McDonnel Air- craft Company, a division of McDonnel Douglas.

Twenty-one squadrons fly more than 375 F/A-18s in the Navy and Marine Corps; Canada, Australia and Spain also use the Hornet. Australia assem- bles its own Hornets near Melbourne.

Motorcyclists have high death rate

If you ride a motorcycle and wonder why you should be cautious, here are a few statistics that may startle you:

According to the Navy Safety Center, in Norfolk, Va, motorcyclists have about 14 times the fatality rate as automobile drivers. In 1985, the motorcycle death rate was 36 per 100 million miles traveled, while the overall vehicle death rate was 2.58 for the same distance.

4 Midshipmen and Marines of "E" Co., 2/3 take a breather after "rescueing" two simulated POWs during a heliborne raid in the Kahuku Training Area.

U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen visit, train with 1st MAB

Midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy,

Annapolis, Md., visited the Air Station, May 21-June 16, to train with Marines of the 1st Marine Amphibious Bri- gade.

Entering their final year at the academy, midship- men have an option, or have already decided, to seek

, commissions as Marine Corps officers.

Instead of the required summer cruise aboard a

naval vessel Tearing "the Navy way," these. 48 young men came to "paradise" to attend a summer training session here to familiarize themselves with the Corps and "get a feel" of life as a Marine Corps officer.

Before the "middies" split up for their respective air/ ground training, they all attended the Leadership Reaction Course with 1st Battalion, 3d Marines at Schofield Barracks where they encountered and acted on situations such as mine- fields, quicksand crossing and ammo recovery prob- lems which were followed by a critique session of their decisions.

The midshipmen pursuing the aviation option visited MAG-24 where they were issued flight equipment, and attended flight briefs. They also received some flying time on the flight simulators as well as actual "backseat" time in fixed-wing aircraft with H&MS-24, VMFA's-232 and 235, and co-pilot famil- iarization flying with HMM's-165, 262, 364, and HMH-463.

While the prospective Marine pilots were getting a taste of flying, the other midshipmen were learning to call for artillery fire at 1st Battalion, 12th Marines; attending inflatable boat and scout swimmer training with A Co., 3d Reconnais- sance Bn; and learning infantry tactics from 2d Bat- talion, 3d Marines.

their "Zodiac" boat exercise.

Middie tours his fallen father's squadron By Sgt. Joe P. Jascur

Midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy

visited the Air Station here recently as a part of the academy's required summer training program.

The midshipmen visiting here have a desire to be com- missioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. One midshipman, First Class Todd W. Hansen-Hickerson, 20, has had somewhat of a difficult time in selecting between the Navy or Marine Corps

1 commission ,- more so than his friends visiting the Air Station.

Todd's father, Major Steve Hansen, was a Marine Corps helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War for Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron-165 and was declared "missing in action" (MIA) during 1967-73.

"I was born but, he had

already been deployed - and I was nine months old when he was actually killed," explained Todd.

According to Todd, his mother, Carole, was very

involved in bringing the prisoners of war (POW's) home.

"As the president of the National League of Fami- lies, she travelled all over

Lieutenant Colonel B.F. Luby, commanding officer of HMM-165, welcomes Midshipman First Class Todd Hansen-Hickerson as an honorary member of the squadron, and presents him with a squadron plaque and patch.

the country, gaining support for the POW's because at the time she didn't know if my father was a prisoner."

After finding out the truth about Major Hansen, Todd's mother remarried a Navy pilot who had been a POW in Vietnam for five years.

"The controversy with me," Todd said, "is that the father that raised me, who I don't consider a 'stepfather', is a naval aviator, and my real father was a Marine Corps aviator.

"It's hard to make a deci- sion right now, although I think I'm very lucky to have two great fathers, one is just as real a father to me as the other."

After attending the Naval Academy Hickerson has really been impressed by the Marine Corps instructors.

"The Marines at the academy are the reason why

I'm still at the acedemy because they've always been there when I have 'fallen on my sword'. And coming here it's just been another part of my soul searching process in making a decision as far as my choosing a commis- sion in the services."

Two men who have been an influence in Todd's path has been his father, retired Navy Captain Jim Hicker- son and Marine Colonel J. Ripley, an instructor at the academy.

"I can't begin to thank Col. Ripley enough who, this past year, was responsible for getting information on my father and had met him personally.

"Inside I feel really torn because of my father who has raised me and the Marine Corps organization, who, I feel have raised me too. As a child, whatever naval installation we moved to, they've always been sup- portive and held out a help- ing hand."

Hickerson's goal is to fly the F-18, but after flying the Ch-46E "Sea Knight" heli- copter during his summer training here, he has even a a greater respect and admi- ration for the helecopter pilots and his father.

The Marines from HMM- 165 gave midshipman Hick- erson a warm welcome and made him an honorary member of the squadron.

"This is one of the reasons I wanted to come to Hawaii - to visit my father's squad- ron. I had also realized, after flying a '46' on June 3rd, that it had been exactly 20 years since my father's death."

First Class Hansen- Hickerson, majoring in political science and engi- neeering, will be in his final year at the academy. What- ever the choice he makes after graduation will be the right choice because he will still be serving his country loyally, just as his fathers have.

Corporal recently named `Mr. 50th State'

in body-building contest By Sgt. Diane Oban

Corporal David D. Mer- witz, a 5-foot-10-inch, 205 pound package of solid mus- cle, is a six year veteran of bodybuilding who takes his sport seriously.

David was recently named Mr. 50th State at the Mr. 50th State Bodybuilding Competition held at the She- raton Waikiki. He also took first place in the Light

heavy/heavy weight cate- gory.

"I was 16 when I first became interested in body- building. I picked up 'Educa- tion of a Bodybuilder' by Arnold Schwartzenegger and was impressed with his story," said the Albany, New York native. "When I first became interested in bodybuilding I worked out every night after school for about three hours.

"When I started training my body responded

quickly," said Merwitz. "All the hours of hard work paid off when I entered my first contest in 1983. I was 19 at the time and took first place in the Mr. Teenage Atlantic Coast Competition."

A week after being named "Mr. Teenage Atlantic Coast" Merwitz took second place in the Mr. LeJuene Bodybuilding Competition. Some of his other competi- tions include second place in the Mr. OWAX Bodybuild- ing Contest 1984 at Kadena Air Base, fifth place in the U.S. Armed Forces Competi- tion 1985, and second place in the Independence Day Bodybuilding Champion- ship 1985.

"Bodybuilding takes up a lot of time," noted Merwitz. "If you want to succeed you have to dedicate yourself. If you're really serious about what you're doing and oth- ers see that, you'll gain their support."

David works with A Bat-

tery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines and receives sup- port from his commanding officer and first sergeant.

"First Sergeant Garcia and Captain Meyers are really supportive," David said. "They've sat down with me to talk about my goals and what I want to do with my competition. They see that I'm dedicated to my bodybuilding and help me by encouraging me to fulfill my goals."

David's wife, Arleen, has also given him encourage- ment. "When I first got mar- ried my wife didn't under- stand why I worked out so much," said David. "Once she understood why I was doing it and why it was important to me she became very supportive."

David's training takes up a lot of his free time. "I train six days a week for three to four hours a day," he explained. "I work on each

body part twice a week. I have a well rounded work out this way, each part of my body progresses at the same time.

"In competition this is important," he continued. "The judges look at so many different things during corn-

petition. The most impor- tant being symmetry of each side of the body; proporti- oned muscles on different parts of the body; and cut, definition and size of mus- cles."

David's goal is to compete in national competition in

1988 or '89. He is quietly optimistic about his goals though. "I've been working out for six years now and k still have a long way to go. :

As long as I continue to ded- icate myself by giving my best and pushing myself beyond my mental limits I'll make it."

Sailors help bring home America's Cup AFIS - For Petty Officer

3rd Class David Hammond and Ensign Bill Harrington, it was unlike any duty day they'd ever served. Music blared, crowds cheered and champagne flowed as Stars and Stripes '87 pulled into port in Freemantle, Austra- lia. Two full years of demanding - often grueling - training had finally paid off. The America's Cup was coming home.

To Hammond and Har- rington, both "on loan" from the Navy (under the same provisions that release service people to participate

in the Olympics) to the Stars and Stripes campaign, the victory celebration was the culmination of two years of fine-tuning their sailing skills, building their bodies and training their minds.

Hammond brought to the campaign electronics and computer experience learned at the Naval Submarine School. This enabled him to install and operate an elabo- rate array of on-board micro- and mini-computers that displayed time and dis- tance data, the boat's track on the course relative to the next mark; wind direction

and velocity and other navi- gational information.

Harrington brought more general experience acquired while a midshipman at the Naval Academy: basic sail- ing skills, physical strength and a willingness to follow orders.

He first joined Stars and Stripes'support team, sand- ing, painting and resanding boat bottoms and preparing rigging. Soon he was work- ing as a navigator and bow- man as well.

But just as important as their technical skills, both Hammond and Harrington

Dallas-based Marine takes time off

for island triathlon By Cpl. La Donna Moore

USMCR, MABS-41

Marines are known for giving 110 percent; push- ing to the limits of their endurance, striving to be the best. Staff Sergeant Mike Nelson has found that those traits also come in handy as a triathlete.

Nelson is an active duty Marine training in Hawaii for two weeks with the reservists of Marine Air Base Squadron-41, home- based in Dallas, Texas, where he is the Motor Transportation mainte- nance chief.

Nine months ago, Nelson raced in his first triathlon, and as he puts it, "I've been hooked ever since."

It all began when he saw the competition on televi- sion. "I thought it was an outstanding method of training because it works all the muscle groups," said Nelson, "and I had been wanting to start a well- rounded training pro- gram."

Nelson is now training for the Team Hawaii 1987 Relay and Individual Tri- athlon, to be held this Sun- day at Kailua Beach Park. The race consists of an 80 meter swim, 14 mile bike ride and 4-mile run.

"It's really like a mini- triathlon," said Nelson. "My goal is to finish the race under 90 minutes." Also racing with Nelson is Sgt. Bill Martin, a reservist with MABS-41 who is an experienced triathlete.

Since his first triathlon, Nelson has raced in three others, including the 1987 Texas triathlon. Normally, he trains seven hours a week; but in preparation for the upcoming triathlon, he has increased his training

to 15-20 hours a week, with emphasis on running.

"I feel really good about what I've accomplished," said Nelson, "and will con- tinue to race as long as it interests me. There's no limit."

brought to Stars and Stripes the ability to work as a team for long periods under pres- sure.

Harrington said compati- bility and a willingness to pitch in and do whatever had to be done were weighed just as heavily as sailing abilities during team selec- tions. While these additional criteria may have weeded some of the more accom- plished sailors off the team, they ensured that those who were selected could work together to make Stars and Stripes win.

History shows the formula worked.

"The team had a strong sense of harmony and few personal conflicts," Harring- ton said.

"Dennis (Stars and Stripes skipper, Dennis Conner) knew what he was doing. He had the best boat, but he also put together the best crew. With the kind of teamwork we had, I think we could have tried any- thing - even Olympic bob- sledding - and wor) "

Teamwork we- critical for members of and

Stripes to survive the rigid routine imposed by Conner.

They practiced steadily for month after month, seven days a week, sunup to sundown. Days began at dawn with weightlifting and aerobics sessions, followed by two hours of boat prepa- ration and maintenance. The team sailed eight or nine hours a day, racing their different boats against each other, first in Hawaii, then in Freemantle. After sailing, they returned to shore to wash down, inspect and, when necessary, repair the boats. A crew meeting ended every day.

The regimen was too much for some. Harrington said that while the team was first being organized, some crew members left because they couldn't han- dle the demanding routine.

But as Stars and Stripes entered the America's Cup finals, every team member knew that Conner's demands would pay off.

"No doubt about it, the team was at its peak," Ham- mond said. "Everyone was really confident. Believe it

or not, the pressure didn't seem that high. We all knew ",

we could win." And, as predicted, Stars .

and Stripes did win, outsail- ing the America's Cup defender, Kookaburra III, in four out of four races. -

Now that they've helped V America bring the Ameri- ca's Cup back to U.S. soil, :

Hammond and Harrington have moved on to new chal- lenges. Hammond is an instructor at the Naval Sub- marine School in Groton, Conn., and Harrington recently started flight school in Pensacola, Fla.

Will they race in the America's Cup again?

Hammond says he'd rather remember the special significance of this race. "There was a tremendous reward in personal pride and personal achievement and a lot of memories. The team was the best I'll ever sail with, and together we made history by winning back the cup for the first time in more than 100 years. But I just can't see how the feeling of being on another team could ever compare."

Aerobics! Low-impact fun, fitness

AFIS - "Low impact" is the newest trend in aerobic exercise. "It's a fantastic way to get involved in a fit- ness program," said Joyce Heflin of the Navy's Health and Physical Readiness Office. "It's social; the music is dynamite ; and with a

*good, personable instructor, you can get a great workout and have a lot of fun. And it's not just for the out-of- shape -a lot of Seabees and SEALS are taking the classes too."

The Seabees and SEALS and others obviously don't rely on low-impact aerobics to ensure they score well on

- fitness tests. "But as an adjunct to training, it's

super. It can relieve the boredom of just working on tested skills,"said Heflin. For dependents and civilians, low-impact aerobics can fill the bill for a fitness pro- gram, said Capt. Frank Gross, staff physiologist at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.

Gross likes low-impact exercises because they can improve or develop upper- body strength. "People who focus exclusively on running may be neglecting their upper bodies," said Gross.

Low-impact aerobics includes more floor exer- cises, and the dance routines keep one foot on the floor at all times. There are no high

leaps, such as those found in regular aerobics, so the body weight is not pressing down on the foot as it hits the floor with as high an impact.

Just because it's safer doesn't mean it's easier. "You can achieve a rigorous workout without going into a high-impact situation," said Gross.

Some of the injuries sus- tained in high-impact aero- bic classes might have been avoided had the instructors been better qualified.

Said Heflin, "It's impor- tant that you make sure your instructor is certified by an organization like the American College of Sports

Medicine. A certified instructor will know CPR and other first-aid tech- niques and will know enough about exert...t phys- iology not to instruct you to do anything dangerous." Low-impact aerobics classes are available at many mil- itary recreation and fitness facilities. The instructors at these classes are properly trained.

If you're looking for a class in the community - and there are many good ones - Gross suggested looking at the room where the class will be taught as well as at the instructor's qualfications. "You want a floor with some resiliency, but it shouldn't be like danc- ing on a pillow either," he said.

And if you want a change from low-impact aerobic dancing, Gross had another suggestion. Try `jarming" - which gets its name from putting a "j" for jog in front of "arm." This involves sit- ting in a chair with "heavy hands" (small weights in the hand) and making swimming motions with the arm. It's great for upper- body strength, and you're guaranteed to baffle at least some of your friends when you excuse yourself to go jarm.

Of course, it's a good idea to get a doctor's advice before low impacting or jarming.

MIDDIES From B-1

Marines of Echo 2/3 acted as aggressors when the entire group of midshipmen conducted a heliborne raid in the Kahuku Training Area. HMM-165 provided the helolifts while officers from 1/3 provided supervi- sion and training for the midshipmen on the ground. The spectacular raid attracted the attention of a local TV station, Channel 4, which sent a news team along on the raid and aired a feature on the "middies" on June 9.

After that, the midship- men were flown to the Poha- kuloa Training Area (PTA) on Hawaii and spent their last five days observing the Marines coordinating an exercise with infantry, artillery, aviation and ser- vice support units.

Marines from 1/3 gave the midshipmen an in-the-field demonstration on live-firing weapons, observation and concealment tactics, and air- borne insertions and extrac- tions, with air support com- ing from HMM-364. The

midshipmen also observed simulated close air support missions directed by 1/3's Tactical Air Control Party.

After the rigorous sched-

ule the midshipmen followed here, they will soon begin another tough schedule - their final year at the academy.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE YOU STOP?

Brakes, yes, but it takes more than that. Your front tire must grip the road without sliding. We suggest a new Metzeler Lazer. Ball stop you in your tracks.
