Hunting in Europe and Germany is steeped in customs and traditions and has often been exclusively for the upper classes until recently. Gun ownership in Germany is a privilege not a right and they have strict guidelines that must be followed to own, store and fire a weapon. One way is to pass an authorized course that Hunting, Fishing and Sports Shooting offers once a year. Course lasts approximately 10 weeks and meets all therequirements of German law. The courseincludes blocks of instruction in safety, customs, traditions, hooting, properweapons handling, laws, and allgame animals in Germany.

On Post - Hunting permits for the on-post area are issued via lottery. In early spring, interested hunters submit their application to vie for a permit, from these applications 10 names are drawn for permits that run from 1 May to 31 January. The on-post area is an individual driven program where maintenance, up keep, feeding and tracking seat rotation is handled by permit holders with guidance from the HFS Program Manager.

The program is a great way to experience how German hunters are expected to manage their hunting areas; and, presents an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view and harvest game one would not normally see in America. To enter the lottery you must be in possession of a valid hunting license the day of the drawing, and assigned to the Grafenwoehr Military Community. Selected hunters have five working days to pay the €325 permit fee or the

slot will move on to the next person drawn.

The Off Post Hunting Area (Egerstadtwald) is approximately 40 minutes from Grafenwoehr. It is a weekend guided hunt for Roe Deer, Wild Boar, Red Deer, Sika Deer. The hunt is conducted by the HFS office and open to all U.S personal with a valid hunting licenses. Join us October 7-10, November 10-13 or December 16-18. .

Rather than climbing up a rock face Klettersteig involves “crossing” or “transversing” rock walls on an established trial while utilizing a safety harness and safety belays. Just as many Soldiers, I consider myself a Ninja Movie connoisseur. I have often wondered what training and skills I would have to obtain to call myself a “True Ninja”. So, when the Main Post Physical Fitness Center started offering the Knowledge is Power-Self Defense Program, which consists of Tang Soo Doo, Self Defense and Ninjutsu, I signed up immediately to find out.

Ninjutsu may appear to be an animated, fantasy-like martial art taught by men wearing black disguises known for vanishing and weaponry, but there is much more to this craft. CPT Michael Asbury, Ninjutsu instructor, will introduce students to the lesser known, but equally important skills of meditation, information collection, techniques of non-detection and misdirection.

CPT Michael Asbury has trained continuously in the martial arts since 1990 and has studied Ninjutsu under Sensei Robert Stevens since 1999. His training group serves as the German branch of Sensei Steven’s Kageshin Dojo. Sensei Stevens is a student of Kyoshi

Gary Giamboi who is one of the top US students of Soke (“Grandmaster”) Shoto Tanemura, president of the Genbukan World Ninpo Bugei Federation.

With its mixture of meditation and physical training, Ninjutsu can be both gracious and unrelenting. Although there are multiple skills in the training this article focuses on 5 of Ninjutsu’s most significant martial arts techniques.

Whether you are a veteran black belt polishing up skills using your nihonto or a beginner itching for exercise, the Knowledge is Power-Self Defense courses offered at the Main Post Physical Fitness Center will absolutely be a great experience. Visit www.grafenwoehrmwr.com for more information.See you at the Dojo, Sayounara!

The battlefield tested techniques of Ninjutsu, which have been passed down 34 generations in an unbroken lineage since the 12th Century AD use strategies very different from what most modern competition based martial artists are accustomed to.

VISIT AND EXPLORE

THE CHRISTMASMarkets OF

GERMANY!

Winter brings more than just frigid extremities It’s the most wonderful time of the year; sparkling lights overshadow every town, colorful decorated trees stand proudly in the middle of town squares and the aroma of hearty food and sweet treats permeate the air. Although Christmas in Germany means quite a few things, nothing is as popular or reminiscent of the holiday season as Christmas markets (Christkindlmarkt), and Germany is deservedly famous for them.

The history of the traditional markets goes back to the late Middle Ages. For hundreds of years, merchants have erected small wooden huts in the centers of cities and towns all across Germany around Christmas, and artisans peddle handicrafts, baked goods, regional cuisine and millions of liters of gluehwein (to help keep Jack Frost at bay, of course).

Spectators from around the world travel to the German markets to peruse through the handmade wares, one-of-a-kind art and baked goodies. From hand-carved wooden ornaments and Nativity scenes, to jewelry and aromatic candles, the Christmas market is a one-stop holiday shop. GARMISCH, Germany In the early morning hours of July 28, 12 students from the Grafenwoehr military community loaded a bus headed south. Their mission was to hike the Zuspitze, Germany’s tallest mountain peak, on the first-ever partnership between the USAG Grafenwoehr Child, Youth and School Services Edge! program and USAG Garmisch Outdoor Recreation. After a quick stop to link up with their guide, Recreation Specialist Drew Benson, and check gear, the group hopped back on the bus for the short ride to the Hausberg Lodge and the start of their trek. The first day the rain that had threatened to put a damper on the day gave way to drier skies and manageable temperatures. The route took the group on a gradual yet steady climb through the beautiful Reintal Valley, providing a new picturesque view around each bend of the trail. After stopping for a late lunch at a hut along the way, the band of merry travelers continued on along the Loisach River, eventually climbing to a height of 1370 meters above sea level reaching the Reintalangerhuette - the overnight stop. After exploring the surrounding area on what must have been a true adrenaline rush after completing such a grueling day, the hikers settled into their room before enjoying a family-style dinner and some live music by the hut’s talented staff. As the sun began to peak the following day, the weary travelers woke to a cheery wake up song. After a hearty breakfast, repacking and cleaning, the gang was

ready to roll again. The rain that had held off the first day was not so kind the following day and all hikers were donned protective gear as they headed down the trail towards their final destination. After 20 minutes of the same gradual incline as the day before, the trail took a sudden and significant change in intensity. The group battled the rain, the clouds, the cool temperatures and the sheer incline for the next two hours, finally reaching a hut built into the

side of the mountain - a safe haven for wet, cold and tired hikers.

“The second day was definitely harder than the first,” said 16-year-old Taylar Mata. “I learned when hiking a mountain in Germany, where the weather is so unpredictable, you should definitely bring at least five changes of clothes.”After a few hours of drying out and warming up, the gang emerged from the hut to find that the rain had blown over and the temperatures became more pleasant. Recharged by this sudden good luck, they embarked with more pace and were soon crunching through new fallen snow while trying to peer through the thick clouds that had enveloped the tops of the surrounding mountains. Finally through the mist, the SonnAlpin, the main ski lodge for the Zugspitze area at 2600 meters above sea level, could be seen. “I’ve never seen anything so beautiful,” said Mata. “Everything looked so unreal.” After checking with the staff there it was determined that there was too much snow and ice to continue the climb to the peak and this would be the group’s final destination on their trek, but there was little disappointment. Rather, the youth involved were already planning their next big hiking trips with their families and proudly shared their momentous accomplishment of climbing 1892 meters and even more memories.

Computer Addictionand Relationships

1. Do not force the person to stop playing or chatting. That will only make the person resentful, and they may resort to doing it secretly.

2. Talk to the person about what he/she is getting out of being on the computer so much. Be open.

3. If he/she says “it is harmless”, don’t disagree. Just listen. Let the person talk about it in his/her own way.

4. Listen carefully for statements that indicate a sense of need. Try to respond and ask how you can be more supportive.

Strategies for dealing with a person spending a lot of time on computer7

Many of the families that I see complain about one spouse or the other spending too much time on the computer, taking them away from their families or other responsibilities to the household. This can cause considerable anger and

frustration in the home, and make the others in the family feel excluded from the private life of the computer-involved person. Sometimes a spouse is playing computer games or spending time on Facebook to the exclusion of involvement with the family, or at least that is the perception of the other spouse. Whether or not this is a true addiction or not is really not the issue. The issue is that if it is affecting the relationship between the two partners, it is a problem that can harm the marriage or the family. There are many reasons why people spend too much time on the computer. Some people use the computer to escape. They may be escaping from almost anything: work stress, family stress, depression, anxiety, or a need for connection that they are not getting from their real lives. It may be a desire to feel more successful, feel more connected to others, or to feel safer in social relationships. Social relationships over the computer are more distant, less difficult to maintain. But they can interfere with one’s real life and real problems.

FAMILIESgetting involved

5. Let the person know what harm you see, and what the risks are from your point of view.

6. In your daily routine, show that you do care, remember to let the person know that he/she matters.

7. If the problem persists, raise your concerns in a non-attacking way and consider talking to a professional.
