Inspiration through various authors on differentiation and participatory culture

It’s been quite a term of self-discovery. With a new home, a baby on the way, and some very real changes happening in my life, my practice has also started to undergo some key pedagogical shifts.

Included here is a map of my growth throughout the course thus far -- with links to various additional components (or “areas”) of growth.

Influential Readings• I am currently reading “Drive” by Daniel

Pink - it offers tips for teachers and adults, discusses the pitfalls of reward systems, and goes into details on the three main components of motivation: autonomy, mastery, and purpose.

• This read has influenced (and helped justify!) my first inquiry into choice in presentation styles.

Participatory Culture• Low barriers to expression• Social connections• Knowledge is decentralized• Students are part of construction

knowledge

These concepts resonated with me - they speak to a new generation of learners that have a different social network than us… and a far greater ability to communicate their ideas.

Another key concept addressed in this report is that of “negotiation”.

Negotiation• The ability to travel across diverse communities,

respecting and understanding multiple perspectives and grasping cultural differences.

Here’s an idea I hadn’t considered… that students will need to use their knowledge of other cultures, tolerance, and understanding to properly process the context in which many types of information are made available.

Publishers, Participants All• Will Richardson discusses the changes in

the generations - it’s okay to talk to strangers, and everyone needs to be aware of their potential on-line audience - both in the short term AND in the long term.

I had this in mind when I had my students respond to Alye Pollock’s “Sticks and Stones” Youtube video. We’re sending her Facebook page our compilation.
