About The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

he Leukemia & Lym-phoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest

voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. We offer a va-riety of programs and services in support of our mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodg-kin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS is a nonprofit organization that relies on the generosity of individual, corporate and foundation contributions to advance its mission.

reSeArcHSince its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $600 million in leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes research. LLS-funded research has led to key advances in understanding blood cancers and has helped produce new treatments to enhance and prolong lives. In-novations in cancer treatment

T over the years have included radiation and chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation and new targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harm-ing normal ones.

pATienT SerViceSLLS has chapters through-out the United States and Canada. Each office conducts life-enhancing patient service programs, including support groups, peer counseling and patient financial aid. LLS also hosts numerous Webcasts and telephone education events, where medical profession-als share the latest research, treatment and clinical trials findings. LLS’s Information Resource Center (IRC), staffed by oncology social workers and health educators, provides the most current information on blood cancers and clinical trials free of charge. Call the IRC at (800) 955-4572 or visit www.LLS.org.

profeSSionAl educATionThe latest scientific and treat-ment advances are shared by LLS’s team of medical professionals through medical symposia, educational events, the Web and printed materials.

in a variety of ways, most importantly speak-ing at and attending events and motivating the candidates.

The campaign launched on March 25th of 2010 and ends tonight with the Grand Finale on June 5th, 2010.

Candidates are nominated by a selection com-mittee made up of past candidates, chapter staff, local LLS supporters and the chapter Board of Trustees. Candidates typically have a personal connection to LLS’s mission or a willingness to learn about it; are self-motivating, enthusiastic, well-networked and success driven; have an interest in increasing public awareness of blood cancers; and have a track record of success in business and/or community endeav-ors.

If you are interested in learning more about the campaign or would like to nominate a candi-date, please contact Julia Stanley, Campaign Manager at 415.625.1133 or [email protected]. The 21st Annual Man & Woman of the Year campaign is scheduled for Spring 2011!

an & Woman of the Year is a unique national campaign that focuses on raising money for the fight against

blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The competition began here in San Francisco twenty years ago! The first event was held in remembrance of John Spencer, a valued Hast-ings Department Store employee who died of leukemia at the age of 39. It was in John’s memory that Hastings began supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Since 1990 more and more chapters have added the Man & Woman of the Year Campaign. Now hundreds of men and women in over 60 cities across America vie for the title each year in a ten-week fundraising competition. Over the last twenty years, candidates nationwide have raised $53 million for blood cancer research and patient services.

All candidates competing for the title of Man & Woman of the Year agree to utilize their leader-ship abilities to conduct their own fundraising campaigns for LLS. Every dollar counts as one vote. The male and female candidates with the most votes are named the chapter’s Man & Woman of the Year. Their totals are then considered in naming national titles.

Candidates raise money in honor of the Boy & Girl of the Year. They are patient heroes chosen for their strength and winning attitudes. Each becomes a spokesperson for the thousands of patients that have been helped by LLS’s patient services and research. The families have pledged to help the candidates and campaign

tella was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) on July

10, 2007 at the young age of two-and-a-half. After spending half her life on chemotherapy, Stella ended her treatment on October 23, 2009 and just turned five years old. During her two-and-a-half years of chemotherapy, Stella has been very matter of fact about things because it’s practically all she knows. Stella had her central line removed so she

could finally take swimming lessons without having to worry about those dressing changes!

Stella is a very happy, inquisi-tive and active preschooler. She is very social and loves to have play dates with her friends from school. Stella loves fairies, unicorns and mermaids but most of all she adores dinosaurs. She plays with her extensive dinosaur collection, watches dinosaur

movies and studies dinosaurs at museums and in books. Throughout treatment, Stella loved going to the clinic because she knew she could watch a dinosaur movie while she got her chemotherapy or transfusion. To celebrate the end of chemotherapy, our fam-ily threw her a dinosaur disco party. Stella is really looking forward to the Grand Finale of the Man & Woman of the Year because she is going to feel like a princess at the Palace Hotel!

y name is Adam Joseph Boegel. I am eight years old, and

in the second grade. I like school a lot. I really like math, but I like to do everything. I like to play with my friends, build Lego projects, and have fun with Kinex. I am a member of a book club for second graders. I also sing for the San

Francisco Boys’ Chorus and I like it very much.

I was two when I got cancer. I don’t remember much. I remember having nurses and doctors put in my port and draw blood out of me. I remember my mom drawing blood out of me too. I liked my doctors and nurses very

much. I remember staying at the hospital and looking out the window at the city. I used to have blonde hair, but now I have reddish brown hair.

I feel great now. Cancer made me a different kind of person, but I still feel like other kids.

The characteristics of “An Unexpected Jour-ney” are unpredictability

and surprise. For me, it was no different. During my eight year “Unexpected Journey” of Cancer, I encountered cancer four times. Through my cancers, Hodgkin’s disease- lymphoma, I learned that the human spirit and will are far stronger than we can ever imagine. Harnessing these, we can have a tremendous impact in our own healing.

Before embarking on my cancer journey, I was living the so called “American Dream.” I was in a high-paced career as

a seasoned and experienced sales management profes-sional diligently climbing the corporate ladder. What I con-sidered a normal life changed the moment cancer entered my life.

I found cancer an invasive dis-ease that impacted my life and everyone around me. Not even with my tenacity and moxy, my ability to successfully run a household, raise my children and care for my husband was I prepared for the unyield-ing single focus needed to travel the road to the state of “cancer-free.” For me, this was a test of my inner resolve to live.

The following metaphors at-tempt to capture how I made it through each of the four can-cer journeys. First, I traveled it

like a “quarterback” grabbing the ball and heading fast and strong to the end zone (the end of treatment) praying for a touchdown (Remission). Score! I traveled it the second time “asleep;” sleeping up to 18 hours a day and metaphorically “asleep” when I was physically awake. I took on the attitude of “It’s no big thing” the third time and floated along in a bubble of denial and avoid-ance. And finally the fourth time, I chose “total aware-ness and consciousness” with healing of my entire being (physical, mental and soulful). All four times, I was able to reach “remission.” Success! Currently, I have been in remis-sion for over three and one half years.

I realize that “We DONT have to go through it alone. WE CAN’T DO IT ALONE!” We are communal beings – our ancestors gathered in tribes, villages and colonies to sup-port, grow, live, and care for each other.

t was April of 2003 and spring had not yet arrived in Ann Arbor after a cold

winter. I was a 19 year old sophomore on the University of Michigan men’s lacrosse team and life was good. Al-though my team was on a trip west for a late-season game in Colorado, I was unable to join them. Instead, I sat in a small doctor’s office on campus star-ing blankly at an x-ray of my chest illuminated on a white projector screen. I listened in disbelief as the doctor sur-veyed the potential causes of the large opaque cloud in the x-ray over the left side of my chest. Later that week with my

parents by my hospital bed-side, I heard our worst fears confirmed in the words of my doctor: “you have cancer.”

After spending several days pondering questions that have no answers, I came to a realiza-tion that has propelled every aspect of my being since: I wanted to live. I fought through eight chemotherapy treatments that summer with everything I had. The poison-ous injections took my hair and my physical strength, but did nothing to dim my resolve. I was declared cancer free in August 2003 and returned to life, determined to build

myself back better than ever. I rejoined the lacrosse team and started my first game just four months after my last chemotherapy treatment. That season I had my best year ever on the field and in life. Each day I fought cancer, and each day I fought to recover from its grasp, I dreamt of a day when such a difficult fight would no longer be necessary. Please join me in the fight against this terrible disease; together we can help make research possible that will someday discover a definitive cure for all types of blood cancers.

carolyn ballingarolyn Balling started her involvement with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in 1998 when she joined the Team In

Training (TNT) Walk Team to complete the inau-gural Rock’n’Roll Marathon in San Diego. She knew from that experience that training for and competing in a marathon would be life chang-ing in some way, she just didn’t know how or by how much.

Twelve years later, she remains involved in TNT. She has been a TNT coach since 1999--first with the Walk Team and now with the Hike Team. In 2007, she was named National Advisory Coach for the Hike program. Over the past 11 years she has coached 1,600 people and has helped to raise over $3 million dollars to support blood cancer research and patient services. Every season Carolyn sees anew how TNT changes lives as she watches participants improve their skills, gain new insights and accomplish their goals.

Every season, too, she’s moved by the grow-ing need for the advances in treatment and research breakthroughs that are made possible by funds raised.

On the work-side of her life, Carolyn is a cor-porate trainer. She has managed the training functions for a wide variety of organizations, including nonprofits, financial services and biomedical manufacturing, and has worked as an independent consultant and contract trainer. As with her work with TNT, Carolyn is attracted to enabling others to make changes in their lives, or adjust to changes that happen to them.

A graduate of UC Berkeley and CSU Hayward, Carolyn lives with her husband, Assistant Hike Coach, Steve, in the Oakland hills.

Thomas A. kleins the Regional Vice President and General Manager of The Fairmont San Francisco, Tom Klein led the way for

The California Collection of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts to define the true spirit of hospital-ity -- by working collectively to raise funds to support vital research for a blood cancer cure and to provide financial, educational and social services for those affected by blood cancer and their loved ones.

Having witnessed the heartbreak and the tremendous strength of hotel colleagues and their families who suffer from cancer, he real-ized that, as a community, we need to work more aggressively toward finding a cure. When Tom and his team met Stella, our 2010 Girl of the Year, they became determined to make a difference.

In addition to managing The Fairmont San Francisco, Klein oversees all Fairmont hotels and resorts in California: The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, The Fairmont San Jose, The Fairmont Newport Beach, The Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica and support of The Fairmont Heritage Place Ghirardelli Square.

Tom would like to acknowledge the following supporters of the campaign:

Heartfelt thanks to the dedicated colleagues of the Fair-mont Hotels and Resorts, his family and friends who gra-ciously donated their time, energy and passion to this ten week fundraising campaign in support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

A Klein’s strong sense of corporate social re-sponsibility has inspired his colleagues to unite in major acts of volunteerism. In the last two years, he has led more than 2,000 volunteers to take part in the annual California Coastal Cleanup. He also guides Fairmont’s volunteer participation with the San Francisco AIDS Walk and the San Francisco Food Bank.

He recently spearheaded another success-ful statewide initiative supporting the brand’s commitment to sustainable tourism and envi-ronmental stewardship, raising approximately $20,000 for the California Save Our Parks Campaign.

prestigious law firms in the country to start the Pranger Law Group, a law firm dedicated to providing high quality legal services at afford-able rates.

Her law firm specializes in all aspects of trade-mark law including counseling, global registra-tion, enforcement, licensing and monetization of these rights. The firm represents clients in several industries including restaurants and bars, wine and spirits, Internet and software services, clothing and accessories, retailers, fitness and select nonprofits. Some of the firm’s notable clients include Prudential Financial, Nike Inc., Juicy Couture, Inc., and rocker Sammy Hagar’s many restaurants and night-clubs. Originally from Indiana, she has called San Francisco home for more than a decade.

Holly’s dedication to raising money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society arises from per-sonal experience. She watched her father die from lymphoma and her best friend’s son, Isaac, has been battling leukemia his entire life. Isaac is now thankfully in remission. Holly dedicates her fundraising to her father’s memory, and to Isaac’s continued health.

Holly would like to acknowledge the following supporters of the campaign:

Committee Mission Remission, “Honoring the Past with Hope for the Future.” Committee Chair, Angela Nichol-son; Fundraising Chair Van Tran; Committee Members: Lisa Águeda, Tanya Ashur, Jenny Burrington, Jennifer Cook, Ashley Long, Meredith McNamara, Allyson Pyrdek, and Heather Robertson; Mentor, Joy Liu.
