I design architecture as frozen frames of life. Architecture should be simple and easy to be realized. My work represents modern moments. However, its principles are driven from the identity of their surroundings. I design with simplicity because it is uninvolved and clean. I refine moments as simple lines and shapes to represent the unmovable frame. Sketching for me is as fuel to my imagination. I use all the media that available for me as tools of thinking and processing. Life is simple. We make it complicated. This also holds true for architecture. While I use simple lines and shapes to create geometries, I use purposeful materials to finish the artwork purely. The same methodology is consistent in all my work. I don’t force my style or identity , I express that occurred in my vision rather than likeness..

ARCHITECTURE AND DEMOCRACYREDESIGNING BENGHAZI COURTHOUSE AND PUBLIC SPACE

As a Libyan citizen first and an architect second, the author of this thesis proposed to create government buildings that will support and practice newly develop democratic laws for the new democratic Libya. The architecture will represent both tradition and modernism Libyan design tradition. As a Libyan architect, the writer of the thesis would craft architecture that combines new methods of design and construction while keeping the Libyan characteristic. The author will create a symbol that reflects the recent history focusing on the revolution to remember all the heroes that we had lost their lives for the name of freedom. This

thesis is about helping to keep the revolution in our memories by creating architecture to support democracy among the Libyan people, to create a civic justice system, and to merge the Libyan identity to the rest of the world community. The project for this thesis is to design the new courthouse, public space, and memorial in downtown of Benghazi, Libya. “Tear it down, build it up” Jami Floyd. This is what this thesis will attempt to do. Tearing the old building and building the new courthouse of Benghazi to represent the new law and justice for the new Libya.

LIBYAN REVOLUTION 2011

On February 17th 2011, the people of Libya made the largest movement toward the new Libya. By conducting revolution movement to over thrown the Gaddafi’s regime.

Where’s the Justice?

On the first day, people gathered in front of Benghazi’s Courthouse. Their main demand was the justice system. They started a revolution to create justice among people.

Then, the revolution spread out to all Libya. During the revolution, many civilians died to free their land. After 8 months, Gdaffie were killed by the rebels and Libya consider to be free and to start the new Libya

Color coded spaces, which shows the main spaces in the program that will make Benghazi Court-house. The spaces were scaled proportionally according to their areas.

The function of the building requires three zones. The main spaces were arranged according to their use. Public zone, which includes Clerk and a library, dedicated for public use. Interface zone contains the courtrooms and auxiliary spaces. This zone is where the public and private zone meet. Private zone is the private spot in the building, which includes judge’s chambers and administration spaces.

The main spaces were organized based on the courtyard. As the courtyard one of the identity of architecture, it’s so important to create a building with courtyard and to have the ultimate protection of the sever weather, and to bring the natural light deeply into the building.

Social aspect of democracy is how to make people interact with the building and with each other. The cognitive idea is to create clear navigation system within the building. The physical is the ease to access to the building (Deigned for all). The openness is the symbolic part in democracy.

The courtyard is not just a dead place to bring the natural light to the building, such as other public buildings surrounding the site. The three component of the site are the public space, courtyard, and pedestrian paths.

To make the courtyard attractive and engaged with pedestrians, it should be accessible. Therefore, I created a path that penetrate the courtyard, and it will create the third street. By doing that, The courthouse is more social and people interactive with it.

To break the horizontal line, I capture the idea of Benghazi Lighthouse and applied it to create vertical element at the most important corner of the building. To apply the idea of democracy as socialism and openness.

The idea of vertical element at the main entrance is common in Benghazi city. There are many public building were designed to have this tower above the main entrance. Therefore, applying this idea will reinforce the identity of place through architectural principles.

Benghazi/ Site

Libya is an Arabic country in Elmagharb Al Arabi situated in North Africa. Its location is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north and Sahara Desert to the south. Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Algeria, and Tunisia are countries on the border with Libya.

Benghazi is the second largest city in Libya after the capital Tripoli. Benghazi is the capital of the Barka region (Cyrenaica region). Benghazi is located in the eastern part on the Mediterranean Sea, almost 1000 kilometer east Tripoli. To the east of Benghazi is Aljabel Alkhder (the Green Mountain).

The courtyard is the social place in addition to the public space.

It was designed as the third street to cross the courthouse.

People will be able to enter the courtyard without entering to

the main building. By doing this, the building will be interact

with all people, not just people who will use the building, and

the courthouse will transform from a place which people afraid

of to a place people like to interact with as a public space.

The main idea of these umbrellas is to create shadow in

the public space during the strong sunny days especially

in summer season. Thees umbrellas was designed

to be around the palms trees to create more visual

connection to the building without losing the views.

The material of the shaded device is semi-translucent

material to have some smooth lights beneath them.

issue and implies a lot of thinking on how the building looks

like from this view, so one of the main point of the design is to

consider this view as attractive modern lighthouse.

I have designed the loft at the first year of my graduate study. This was the first project in SCAD. The loft located in New York City with one side that faces the street. The loft consists of one bedroom, living room, kitchen, and reading room. I have utilized the loft by taking advantages of every square inch. I have used CAD, Sketch Up, and rendered in 3D Studio Max and V-Ray. My concept is to create a loft in New York City where the prices of living is too high with utilizing the space to be ultimately used.

The idea of the centralized wall was driven by maximizing the use of the spaces. This wall is located in the middle to create a partition that spreads the living room and the kitchen. The TV is hanging on the wall and can be spin around, so people can watch the TV in the living room or in the kitchen. The dining table can move and close in the wall to create more space in the kitchen.

The client loves reading, so I created informal reading space. The client can pick a book and lay down and read it. This space could be used as gust sleeping place. This is the ultimate utilization of small spaces.

Abdo El Hkem El Zaroq’s Villa is one of my favorite work. I applied my thoughts of simplicity and modern mass to occupy the rectangle site. The two story villa is unique in its White color with brown breaks. The client was involved in the processes to get much better result.

I designed the villa in 2009 when i was working in Assarh Company. Other architects also was involved in some parts. Ashreif Bo Lifa was the principle architect in Assarh Company. he helped me to form the villas and to create the proper function that should reflect the client’s need. While I use the simple lines and shapes to create the simple geometries, I use simple materials to finish the simple artwork.

The Villas is located in Benghazi City in Libya. The site is rectangle shape with only 17m width and 34m length. The Libyan standers required 4m set back on the street side and 3m from other sides. The climate in Benghazi is partly hot and dusty. it’s bold to apply a white color in this weather. However, the white color gave it the unique style especially with the surrounding.

I have used many tools to create this work. Starting with sketching by hand the basic ideas on piece of paper. Then, I developed the idea and refined it on AutoCAD. Sketch Up is where I created the

ISLAND VILLAGE is a sustainable neighborhood located in Orlando, FL. This is a team work during my graduate study at SCAD. The biggest issue on the site was the power line that cut

the site. So we shaped our concept based on solving this problem. The main concept of our village design is to make a continuous linear park that branches out and connects all the land on the site.

Within this liner park will be unobstructed lanes for pedestrians to travel from places to place as major mode of transportation. The main transportation system is trolley lines that cut the linear park,

while the cars are not allowed to access the community. There are two major parking garages on the two main entrances. People have to park their cars and take the trolley. By doing this, we created cleaner environment by keeping the natural resource.

A portion of the pedestrian walkway will be paved, covered above, and lit at night using solar powered LEDs. It also will harvest rainwater and reuse it as a misting spray to keep it cool during hot days.

This passage is designed to be pleasant to use in a variety of weather and lighting conditions, such as hurricanes, the community will have the option of finding safety in several storm shelters located along the same linear path.

The individual housing units are designed to be highly customizable. In this way, there will be certain prefab shapes for each style of home that on a website application can be combined in order for

each client to design a home to fit their specific. On the entry points to the village will be a more urban feeling environment with mixed use retails and condos. The other housing will be like beads that dangle

across the string of the linear park. Each of housing arrangements that project from the linear park will group townhouse buildings and about 6 individual houses in a small village neighborhood unit. The center of the neighborhood will include an area for community garden plots.

PERFORMANCE ART AND RETREAT BUILDING The Performance Art and Retreat Building is a mixed used building of two programs. The first part is retreat which is a place for having a great time and enjoying the vacations. The second part is theater for performance art. The building is designed to have a group of performers in one place. They stay at the retreat for a week or more, and at the end

they will perform the art. During their stay, they will use a rehearsal space for practicing before the show time in the main theater. To sum up, this building brings creative people and provides the perfect environment to create an art work. The site is located in Smoky Mountain in North Carolina.

This diagram shows the program in both buildings. The common space in the two programs is the rehearsal space. in addition, the 3D diagram shows the volume of each space and its relation to the others.

The two programs come together to create the basic volume of the building. Then, the reaction of the site came after that. The building starts to take shape based on the site condition, such as direction to the good views, and flat land to rehearsal spaces.

The Carter Family eatery is one of my projects that I focused on processes. The Carter Family Fold is a musical performance and concert venue located near Hiltons, Virginia. It is dedicated to the preservation and performance of old time country and bluegrass music. This place is consider to be one of places where Country Music started. Our goal was to design an eatery to provide foods to the visitors.

My concept started by picking the site to create the architecture. The spirit of place and the emotions of music reformed my idea. By putting the building cross the main road, I created a clear connection to the main theater. The eatery will be inside the woods and trees. This is not eatery similar to typical ones. It’s more an outside and inside building. People can eat in informal way during they are listening to music.

Using the hand that creates the improvisation as the base of the design is the beginning to create a relationship between jazz and music. Visualization work is my hobby, and I’m interested in 3D work as it is frames create the realistic images. I use 3D software to create my views based on the original design. My favorite part is when it comes to light the essence. I like playing with different light tools to create different mode which is suitable for the design. Modeling and rendering are the most important parts to create the perfect realistic images.
