Thank you so much for picking up our 2020 calendar. We’re grateful that you’re following our work.

Throughout the year, we work hard to earn your trust through our daily programming and our weekly newsletter, which includes highlights about new initiatives and updates on real-community impact of our work.

We are here to support the spiritual growth of all Muslims in the East Bay.

Here’s what you can expect from us: relevant weekly youth and adult programming and inspirational speakers to help you and your family find faith through community.

Here’s what you can expect when you walk through our doors: a diverse congregation and a committed set of community leaders who feel privileged and honored to serve you. We act on your ideas and we embrace you wherever you are on your spiritual journey.

Our programming and outreach mirror your experiences. Together, we strive to proudly

retain our Muslim identity while being integral components of our larger community.

Here’s what else you should know about us: We’re unlike other religious non-profits. We opened MCC’s doors in 2010 on a visionary self-sustaining model that means our day-to-day operations are secure, by the Grace of God.

We ask only that — if you find value in the work we do — you invest in our future growth and community support efforts. We are accountable to you.

community members; however, we cannot make community happen without you. You are essential to our success.

A Snapshot of the MCCThe Muslim Community Center (MCC) – East Bay is a vibrant community where each day we attempt to love and worship God (great and glorified is He) and follow the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Our conviction is driven by a community-minded approach to Islam that appreciates the many opportunities and challenges of being Muslim in America in 2020. That ethos is expressed

daily through our many services and programs.

We offer spiritual development and youth empowerment programs that aim to be fun and inspiring. We strive for a family-friendly environment that encourages modesty, creativity, and community involvement. We are responsive, forward-thinking, and an environmentally friendly mosque.

As the largest Islamic complex in the Tri-Valley, our Friday prayer service draws

nearly 450 worshippers from across the East Bay. The Center also sponsors public lectures and participates in interfaith activities through regional and national religious organizations.

The MCC is the spiritual oasis for Americans Muslims living Islam through worship, education, service, leadership, and outreach. Engage with your community center us as we uplift lives as a model Muslim American community.

MCC follows traditional moon-sighting that relies on regional, verifiable naked-eye sighting of the new crescent moon for all Hijri months.

In addition to being a space for the five daily prayers, the 41,500 square foot MCC facility bustles each day with a wide range of programs, classes, and activities that serve the wide-ranging, diverse needs of our community.

Our congregation hails from more than 30 nations around the world.

We host a weekday Qur’an, Arabic, and Hifz program for 135 students; Friday evening halaqas

for 180 young attendees; Sunday School for 425

students; a family and couples’ counseling room; a youth office; and a multipurpose space for community functions and events.

Our programming mirrors the experiences of our congregation members as they retain a unique

Muslim identity while being a part of the larger American community.

Our programs include Friday evening family halaqas; several large events preceded or followed by a communal dinner; basic Islamic creed classes in Farsi; martial arts; Urdu and

Farsi language classes; toddler play sessions; senior and post-Fajr socials; hikes and outings; a substance abuse family support group; new Muslim and women’s book club meetings; civil rights and civics training; programming for our special-needs families (MCC is the West Coast’s first gold-certified special-needs friendly mosque); and so much more!

The blessed month of Ramadan is when MCC is at its most active. Attendance for most daily

prayers triples or even quadruples.

With his melodic voice, Qari Amar Bellaha leads the Taraweeh prayers which are broadcast live to the world via Facebook and YouTube. MCC provides Taraweeh babysitting and a teen lounge.

MCC also hosts a nightly singles’ iftar; a youth iftar on Fridays; a community iftar on Saturdays;

and on Sundays, an iftar for specific cohorts: a

special-needs family iftar, an interfaith iftar for

neighbors, an iftar for new Muslims, and an iftar for our families headed up by single moms.

Throughout the month, MCC hosts qiyams and suhoors for the community, our women’s group,

and for our teens. We also have Itikaf in the last ten days.

MCC encourages younger children to keep a Ramadan good deeds chart. The winners are

awarded on the night of the grand Khatam-

ul-Qur’an, which last year attracted 1,500 worshippers.

For Eid Al-Fitr, MCC hosts three prayer sessions to accommodate about 1,000 worshippers as well as a family Eid carnival in the parking lot.

In Ramadan, MCC hosts our canned food drive for our neighbors in the Tri-Valley

who are experiencing food insecurity. The MCC Girl Scouts Troop also collects new Eid toys for

the children in those families to which MCC is honored to provide Zakat funds..

In 2003, about a dozen Tri-Valley Muslims organize a Friday Jum’uah service in the basement of one person’s home. From there, the community grows and leases a progressively larger space for its worship services and Sunday School.

In 2006, community leaders draft a charter for a new regional community center focused on the youth. The MCC East Bay is born.

In 2010, a former self-defense training institute in a Pleasanton business park goes up for sale.

The building’s owner accepts a $5 million offer for

the 41,000- square foot building - about half its appraised value from just a few years prior.

In the fall of 2010, a dream is realized when the community moves into its permanent digs: a five-acre site which - after major phases of improvements - houses a large prayer hall, conference hall, banquet hall, and 21 classrooms.

In 2017, all interest-free loans (Karz-e-Hasana) are returned to community members. The building is also paid for by sale of a three-acre parcel of land in Dublin that the community had owned in hopes

of one day building a purpose-built mosque.

In 2018-19, all bathrooms renovated, landscaping and fire sprinkler system upgraded, and sound barrier wall encased prayer hall.

Since 2013, a tenant has been leasing 10,000 square feet from MCC and hundreds of members have been paying monthly dues that together provide a steady stream of operating income to fulfill the founding mandate of a bustling faith-based community space, professionally managed, and dedicated to family and youth.

The Future of Muslims in the Tri-ValleyWith each passing year, the Muslim community in the Tri-Valley has grown more diverse and more visible. The fusion of immigrant and indigenous influences has shaped the region’s cultural landscape over the last several decades.

We are now positioning ourselves for a growth and engagement trajectory as second and third

generation families expand and mature.

Major building projects in the past five years have included renovation of the worship space,

conference room, and bathrooms; landscape, parking lot, and security upgrades; and

improvement of our classroom spaces along with our Montessori tenant’s rental space.

A full-scale expansion and renovation is being planned and will be scheduled, God willing.

The future remodeling plans include the addition of a library, senior and youth lounges, a cafe, and a new banquet hall space with a service kitchen.

Some upcoming programming for MCC include youth camping trips; food delivery and Jumu’ah shuttle services for seniors; visits to homebound elders and the ill; and services for our young professionals who tend to be transient and require more specialized programming in order to engage.

Last year, MCC provided hundreds of thousands in Zakat and Sadaqa to hundreds of your deserving Muslim neighbors in the Bay Area.

The funds helped settle newly arrived refugees and recently released Muslim inmates; helped stave off evictions; helped get homeless Muslims off the streets; helped cover final expenses for indigent Muslims; and helped sisters and their children flee domestic violence and begin new lives.

As a leading Islamic charity provider in the Bay Area, we have a fiduciary responsibility to you

and to God. We verify information, and we often develop a plan with applicants to help get them to eventually be self-sufficient. The plan may include monthly stipends with conditions; financial or mental health counseling; and job search resources.

Some of our other charity efforts include more than 100 vehicles donated from our congregants to needy families in the past few

years; 50 laptops donated to refugees and domestic violence victims; sponsorship of the Lighthouse Mosque in Oakland via Imam Zaid Shakir’s urban-suburban mosque partnership program; raising of nearly $30,000 for North Bay and Camp fires victims; and many other charity programs.

In 2019, we held our first-annual mandatory financial literacy and empowerment workshops for repeat charity applicants. In 2020, we bring on staff a part-time social worker to help our growing caseload.

Youth

Expanding our youth programming during the past two years has been a significant growth marker and a point of personal pride for MCC’s founders.

As Youth Director, Shaykh Rami Nsour has thoughtfully overseen this expansion with a vision to help develop our youth into better citizens and better Muslims by integrating

mainstream educational techniques with Islamic principles.

Every Friday evening, Shaykh Rami and his team of youths — in partnership with The Rahmah Foundation (which leads girls’ halaqas) — educate young minds by emphasizing Islamic values through lessons and extracurricular activities.

The next generation has responded well. That vital pipeline to the youth has already returned dividends. In long-running programs like the Sunday School and Friday Night Halaqas, we see

young graduates returning to teach and mentor even younger students.

To help guide them on their journeys, Shaykh Rami keeps bi-monthly office hours for spiritual care. He meets regularly with our young Muslims whose challenges range from undergoing

a crisis of faith to having parents undergoing a divorce to just needing to be heard while undergoing a confusing time in their own lives.

The vision for MCC’s youth programming is to instill and develop an understanding of Islam based on sound knowledge so that every one of our youth can individually cultivate and maintain an intense spiritual relationship with God throughout his or her life.

Welcoming Our NeighborsThe MCC routinely opens its doors to community members. Many visitors join us for Friday services. They come seeking to learn about and appreciate Islamic beliefs and Muslim cultures.

We’re American and We’re Muslim

Our work in interfaith cooperation and community outreach is representative of a strong trend by

American-Muslims to help clear up misconceptions about Islam.

We speak about Islam reguarly at community gatherings; host daily English language classes; co-host monthly Adopt-a-Highway clean-ups and food distributions; host quarterly blood drives and interfaith events; host four county voting precints and candidate

forums each election; and we serve as an emergency Red Cross diaster shelter as well.

An extension of our community work is prison outreach. MCC provides Islamic literature to Muslim chaplains in two area jails and one prison; we are also honored to sponsor two Eid banquets for inmates.

Our outreach work is focused on finding common ground with practitioners of other faiths while conveying the truths about our own faith with the utmost clarity.

MCC employs an operations manager; a youth director; a bookkeeper/Zakat administrator;

and staff for the facilities, events, and additional support.

The organization is overseen by a two-tiered administrative structure consisting of a Board

of Directors and a Board of Trustees. The organizational structure is grounded on a visionary self-sustaining model so that its crucial daily operations are not directly dependent on donations. MCC’s expansion and growth is contingent on community members seeing

continued value in what MCC does.

MCC has a strong organizational structure based on the Islamic precept of servant-leadership, which is laid out in its bylaws (mcceastbay.org/bylaws).

Leaders are composed of men and women volunteers selected from the congregation who demonstrate a clear commitment to service. The Board of Directors has been led by a sister since 2016.

The MCC’s bylaws also require that each MCC Board member provides geographic diversity so that the three areas served by the MCC

(Pleasanton/Castro Valley, Dublin/Livermore, and San Ramon/Danville/Alamo) are adequately represented.

Contrary to most well-established mosques, MCC does not employ a full-time imam. In the last decade, there has been a trend in the United States towards institutionalizing the role of the imam.

MCC’s philosophy is that having a rotating cast of preachers allows for a greater diversity of opinions while limiting possible cultural biases. Each Friday, a pair of different community members or visiting scholars delivers the weekly sermons.
