Muskegon Tower Today
Muskegon Tower is a Level 5 “Up/Down” facility located on the shores of beautiful
Lake Michigan. The facility went through refurbishment projects during 2011/2012
and we are currently awaiting a boiler replacement and new cab windows. The
facility also has an attached TRACON with three Radar displays to support training
and split configurations.
Muskegon County Airport is currently served by Skywest Airlines, a United Express
commuter flying Regional Jets, with service to Chicago O’Hare. The airport also has
monthly charter services to Laughlin, Nevada with Sun Country Airlines. The airport
has a crossing runway layout utilizing Runways 6/24 and 14/32. Runway 14/32 was
expanded in 2008 to a length of 6100 feet. The airport is home to one FBO, a local
flying club and several General Aviation based aircraft.
Authorized facility staffing consists of two Front Line Managers, one Secretary, one
Air Traffic Manager and 18 Controllers.
Muskegon airspace was recently redesigned and expanded to the South. The new
airspace allowed us to provide better services to West Michigan Regional Airport,
one of our busier satellites. The airspace is configured to support a North/South split
during our busier times of the year such as the annual EAA convention in Osh Kosh,
Wisconsin.
We are an extremely seasonal facility with much of our traffic occurring during the
summer months.

Local Area Information
West Michigan
If you’re a fan of the outdoors, you
couldn’t have found a better place to live.
The “West Coast” offers activities during
all four seasons of the year. If you like the
activities the “big city” has to offer, Grand
Rapids is less than an hour drive away and
you’re only 3 hours away from both
Chicago and Detroit. While the airport
itself is located in Muskegon County, the
area in general comprises several counties.
Muskegon County
Muskegon County, bordering the shores of Lake Michigan offers many attractions to
its residents and visitors. Boating, camping, beach strolling, biking, riding the Lake
Express Ferry, attending Muskegon
Bike Time, and Michigan's
Adventure Amusement and Water
Park are among favorites for
summer visitors. During the winter
months, The Muskegon Luge &
Outdoor Sports Complex offers
cross-country skiing trails, an ice
skating rink, snow shoeing and a
luge run. All year long Muskegon
is a destination to visit, with such
amenities as the Frauenthal Theater, The Muskegon Museum of Art, and The Hackley
and Hume Historic Site, just to mention a few. According to the U.S. Census Bureau
2009 estimate, Muskegon County has a population of 173,951.
9
Ottawa County
Ottawa County is located in the southwestern section of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
Its western boundary is formed by Lake Michigan and its eastern boundary is
approximately 30 miles inland. Thirty-eight (38%) percent of the County's land mass
is farmland. Today the County has a
population of 260,364 inhabitants and is
the 8th most populous county in the state.
Each year this area welcomes millions of
visitors to its vacation playground. In
Holland, people from all over the world
come to the Tulip Time festival each
spring. Ottawa County's convenient
location and never-too-warm summer
climate have made it a mecca for
sportsmen and vacationers. Besides Lake
Michigan beaches, there are 307 miles of
rivers and streams, two state parks, and over 5,000 acres of county parks and open
space lands for visitors to enjoy.
Newaygo County
Newaygo County was named after
Chippewa Indian Chief: Naw-wa-goo,
one of the signers of the Treaty of
Saginaw in 1812. The county has over
230 natural lakes and over 350 miles of
rivers and streams. Three huge dams
were built after the turn of the century:
Croton, Hardy and Newaygo. Croton
and Hardy Dams remain today, with
Hardy the largest earthen dam east of the Mississippi. Today Newaygo County relies
on tourism as its main economic support, with agriculture and small manufacturing
secondary. The Muskegon River continues to be the main attraction for summer
cottage residents and fishermen, who find it nearly the best source for steelhead in the
spring and salmon in the fall anywhere in Michigan. Hunting, camping and RV’ing
10
are also excellent, as over half the county is contained in the Manistee National
Forest.
Oceana County
The scenic agricultural community of
Oceana County is located on the shore
of Lake Michigan about an hour north
of Grand Rapids. Devoid of the urban
sprawl, Oceana County is the
permanent home of more than 20,000
Michiganders, while attracting
thousands of tourists to the area each
summer to experience the recreation
and relaxation of the unspoiled Lake
Michigan shoreline. As of the 2000
census, the population was 26,873.
The county seat is Hart. Oceana
County is thought to be named for Lake Michigan, a freshwater "ocean." However,
there is an opposing viewpoint which holds that it was named for the book Oceana,
written by James Harrington in 1656. One of the largest attractions in Oceana County
is the Silver Lake sand dunes.
Attractions Abound in West Michigan
Up and down the shoreline there are
treasures to be found by those ready to
explore. Regardless of the season, activities
and adventures abound. You can find
various festivals and events throughout the
year. Some of the larger events include the
Tulip Time festival in Holland, the Coast
Guard Festival in Grand Haven and various
music festivals in Muskegon.
We don’t stop during the winter either.
With miles of lighted trails for cross
country skiing, snowmobile trails
11
connecting through several counties and downhill skiing and snowboarding within an
hour’s drive, you can find many things to do to keep the winter blues away. One of
our lesser known hidden gems is the Winter Sports Complex located in Muskegon.
This venue provides the opportunity to skate, cross country ski or even luge. This
track is one of only four tracks in the United States and has been the training grounds
for Olympic level athletes.
