What are your thoughts on the current state of hip-hop?

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Inglewood California, but I now stay in Reseda CA (818 area). What is your background musically/ or anything else you want to tell ppl out there about yourself? I started writing lyrics when I was 9 years old. My 1st passion for music wasn’t necessarily Hip-Hop; more of the line of Neo-Soul. I was singing for quite some time. I then dipped into metal for a little while, and from there was my transition to Hip-Hop. Who inspires you/ your music? Great question…I think what truly inspires me to do music is other’s doubt upon my behalf. I’m very spiteful, so when someone is belittling me in any shape, form, or fashion, I tend to spitefully prove them wrong. When faced with a negative situation, one must maintain hope in a positive outcome. So, what are your thoughts on the current state of the game? Hmmm, I think the game is currently at a standstill, regarding musical standards. What I mean by that statement is that in today’s music, artists don’t necessarily create, they just tend to make. The difference is that when you CREATE, you’re developing your own unique sound from the ground up, whereas when you MAKE, you’re simply using a

template that people hear frequently, with intentions of mimicking the crowd response effect. Artists should focus on making music, consisting of LONGEVITY. How do you separate yourself from other artists? I simply isolate myself from those who do not give off positive & productive vibes. People tend to draw towards me for the wrong reasons, so rather then being flamboyant about my progressional where abouts, I just stay to myself or selected individuals. By doing that, I’m capable of CREATING music on scale that will be carried throughout history. Who influenced your style? I would say my biggest influences are KRS-ONE, Guru, Big L, 2Pac, Tech N9ne, and D’Angelo. Would you become mainstream to make more money? Definitely. At the end of the day, everyone in this game is trying to provide for their loved ones, so yes, I would definitely consider the mainstream. Who do you want to work with in the future? I would like to work with Tech N9ne. I feel like him and I would create something EPIC.

Where are you from? Baltimore, MD

What is your background musically? I don‘t have any "formal" musical background. I just always payed attention to what sounded good in all genres of music. from instruments, to vocals, to background noises, to wordplay.

How long have you been rapping? I've been recording since the end of 2011. But I had always been playing around with rap since I was about 11, mainly just freestyling on camera with my brothers.

@JuegoTheNinety

Musicventure 7

Page 11: Musicventures 2nd edition

How do you define your style?

I call it Phantom Rap. I mix a a lot of reality and fiction in my verses and just leave it up to listeners to decide what they believe.

Who influences or has influenced your music?

I go back and listen to the music i used to really fuck with when I was a kid and try to take parts of what i liked about it and try to put my own edge on it. and its been working.

Who inspires you/ your music?

My brother Rock. He was always good at freestyling growing up so we'd jus battle each other and make whoever came around us rap, even though most of it was ass. then Rock started taking it serious in high school and naturally it made me want to have something to do with it. It's just been building and getting more solid since then.

What are your thoughts on the current state of hip-hop?

It's cool. theres so much music out here, something for fans of every lane of Hip Hop. And its cool that the underground sound i grew up fuckin with is coming back.

How do you separate yourself from other artist?

I automatically throw popular topics in hip hop music out the window. I just mix my stories up with crazy made up stories.

What is unique about your music? How would you define your style?

I just want my music to be to people what great music is to me. The type of shit that makes you think about things differently.

Would you ever become mainstream to make more money?

Of course. especially if i could stay independent.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

Anyone with a similar vision as me musically.

Musicventure 8

Page 12: Musicventures 2nd edition

Where are you from?

I'm from Park Forest. A far south suburb of Chicago. I go everywhere in the city, but I lay my head in Park Forest every night.

What is your background musically?

Well, music honestly runs through my veins. My grandfather used to write and compose music for some artists like Lou Rawls, Temptations, etc... way back in the day. My great-grandfather used to teach music at Dunbar in Chicago. I used to play three saxophones and my brother the drums and the sax... So music would definitely be the biggest, if not one of the biggest things in my life.

@daveamazin

Musicventure 9

Page 13: Musicventures 2nd edition

How long have you been rapping?

Honestly, I've been rapping since probably 2007. I gave up rapping for a while, then started back in 2010, recording some features with my homies here and there when they wanted my bars, but that didn't last long. People who knew that I actually had talent and an ear for great music told me I should start up again, so I decided to take it serious again and dropped "Death Comes In 3$" January 2013. My first full project, and semi triumphant return to rapping.

How do you define your style?

There really is no definition. I let the music and the listener define what they hear and how they interpret it. I hear some sh*t and I start freestyling over it a couple of times with like 10-12 different flows... Pick one I f*ck with heavy and mix it up with some freaky stuff to appeal to me, but most importantly, appeal to whoever is listening. So I honestly could not explain what my style is. That's up for y'all to decide. Haha.

Who influences or has influenced your music?

Well, with rap, I have so many different influences. Everything from Kanye West, to Lil B The Basedgod, to EPMD, to Nas, to Dom Kennedy, Wiz Khalifa... It's so many rappers that I love and f*ck with and have helped me find what works for me. But musically, rap isn't even my favorite genre. I love grunge. Nirvana honestly is my favorite band/artist ever... So it's hella varied on influences. I just love music.

Who inspires you/ your music?

I feel like I inspire myself. Wait, that's a lie. The higher being really inspires me. Whatever happens in life or what I see and experience helps me write music. I never really have writer's block. I can write a song in 10 minutes and it'll be better than most people stuff they been writing for months. I just take my time with it though. Like one verse will be some sh*t I went through already, and the next verse will be some sh*t that happens a couple weeks down the road. It's just life that helps me write and compose.

Musicventure 10

Page 14: Musicventures 2nd edition

What are your thoughts on the current state of hip-hop?

Rap is weak as hell. It's a state of emergency. Over saturation causes the music to fall second to gimmicks... Whoever go the best scheme on making people like them get the most plug. I'm an artist first, and a business man second. I know that my product, (art) has to be the best and appeal to the most and marketing that product is important, but not the most important. Because, if your music is good, 7/10 times it markets it self.

How do you separate yourself from other artist?

I just talk what I know and what I do and what I've done. I'm humble but, confident. I don't talk crap behind people's back and I just keep it real... I'm not in it to make friends, but the friends I have made are invaluable. A lot of these artists honestly do this to be liked. I could care less. I'm just doing what I love, I guess.

If you could change something in the world with your music, what would it be?

Blacks killing blacks. Violence and ignorance in general. People are so stupid. I hate it. And I don't hate anybody, but I do hate a lot of worldly sh*t that the powers that be have tricked us into believing in. I would just want to lift the veil.

Would you ever become mainstream to make more money?

I mean... Most cats who go mainstream don't own themselves. If I could own myself and my art, hell yeah I would. You can reach a bigger base that way. I mean, isn't that the goal of art? To show it to the world? Getting paid for it is a plus.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

There's a lot of artists I want to work with forreal... But one I want to work with in extreme depth is Syd Da Kyd from Odd Future... I feel like her voice and my raps could take some stuff to a whole another level.

Where are you from?

I am Born And Raised In San Francisco, California.

What is your background musically?

I play the guitar and dabble with the piano. I have been a professional performer since August 19th 2008!

Coming up on my 5th year anniversary of my first independent Release "I'm Tryin To Make A Livin And Not A Killin"

Free Download Here: http://sellassie.bandcamp.com/album/im-tryin-to-make-a-livin-not-a-killin

How long have you been rapping?

We'll i have been rapping and writing my own songs for the last 15 years.

How do you define your style?

I define my style as "Anti-House Negro Rap Music" Rap music that doesn't glorify the ills of the ghetto and black life in Amerikkka.

Its a style where you have to be yourself to pull off. Thats why i have no trouble getting booked all across the country because people appreciate smart, articulate,

original rap music. Never selling my soul for the gold.

Who influences or has influenced your music?

I have lots of influences; 2Pac, Gil Scott, The Watts Prophets, KRS-ONE, Prince, Bob Dylan, Rick James, Steely Dan...I was raised and influenced by a wide variety of music. Coltrane, Miles, Vince Guaraldi, The list goes on and on. All musicians

who didn't have any issues of being just "themselves"

Who inspires you/ your music?

I was really influenced by Tupac Shakur. Who took it amongst himself to never sell out his people via a rap song. Always making us realize that

you can't blame the oppressed, you have to blame the oppressor, And he ultimately paid for it with his life. I made a pledge that i would carry on the tradition of a

smart, charismatic, articulate, black rapper in this day and age of the almost extinct smart, charismatic, articulate, free speaking black rapper.

Musicventure 14

Page 18: Musicventures 2nd edition

What are your thoughts on the current state of hip-hop?

There are two industries within the rap game, there is the mainstream, that is run by the prison industrial complex. Where they profit on how many brothas and sistas get locked up in their federal, private prisons from the influences of the

negative messages given to the listener emotionally and psychologically by the rapper & coproration they put on the soap box. That industry i don't even trip on.

Thats for the Sambos and Black Bolue members. Then there is the independent side of the game. Where you have control of your publishing, royalties, music you put out to the public, how, where and when you tour, you control your merch, the list goes on and on. But the latter you have to

work hard, thats why so many are driven to the former because the masses watch TV and are fooled into thinking the videos are real, the money is real, the respect is real, They waste so much time trying to integrate into a system where you don't get elected because of how good you may be, but you get selected dependent on who

much money you can make for the corrupt corporations pushing the buttons.

How do you separate yourself from other artist?

Listen to this: http://sellassie.bandcamp.com/track/bury-the-man-continue-the-plan I don't make fake rhymes, mirrored with lies, i don't follow trends, i don't kiss ass

and join hip-hop cults to be accepted. I just let time tell. It always does.So far, lots of emcees who started when i started quit and have given up just in the

last 5 years.

If you could change something in the world with your music, what would it be?

For the world to see that you can be a successful rap artist that tours, and enjoys making conscious, progressive, political hip hop/rap music. You don't have make rap music that glorifies drugs, black on black crime, murder, violence, degrading

women, promoting under age drug use, alcohol, Insecurities. The current state of mainstream "hip hop" as they call it is sickning!!

Would you ever become mainstream to make more money? No sir! i'd rather work at the post office!

Who would you like to work with in the future?

great question, id have to get back to you about that one! The next interview i'll think of some cats!

Where are you from?

I’m from a city called Prichard, Alabama. It’s inside Mobile County. Mobile is on the Gulf Coast and we are also the Birthplace of Mardi Gras.

What is your background musically?

Well I grew up in church so growing up I heard a lot of Gospel and soul music. My Older sister sang in different groups and sometimes I would go along. I got into music at the age of 10 when I decided to play the trumpet after being inspired by an amazing trumpet player at my church. I learned a lot vocally in High school

chorus. I played all through college. I got my big start musically at Alabama State University where I was a part of The wind ensemble, Symphonic band, Jazz band

and of course the Marching Hornets.

How long have you been making music?

I have been making music for 16years now

How do you define your style?

It’s Very theatrical and edgy. You never know what you’re going to get with me. I love to keep my audience in suspense. It’s exciting and I love it

Who influences or has influenced your music?

Some of my biggest influences are Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Left Eye, Fantasia, Ginuwine, Tupac, and the list goes on. I chose those in particular because of their originality and uniqueness. I have truly been influenced by all of the music that

has been around me my entire life.

Who inspires you/ your music?

Some of my musical inspirations are Louis Armstrong, Trombone Shorty, John Legend, Miles Davis, R.Kelly, Jill Scott and several more. All of these artists

inspire me with their ability to reach any audience with their passion. I love them!

Musicventure 18

Page 22: Musicventures 2nd edition

What are your thoughts on the current state of hip-hop/music/music industry?

Nothing is like it used to be. You never know what to expect these days from some of these artist. I feel like the current state of Hip-Hop is saturated and has become less real and more material. Some of my favorite rappers coming up were Tupac, Biggie, Andre 3000, Nas, Eminem and Missy Elliot...Etc. and I felt that I could

connect with them and they were true life spitters. They kept it real regardless but now there are not many rappers that I can really connect with because it seems like

everyone’s just trying to be like everybody else and I just can’t get with that. It’s too saturated. The current music industry just doesn’t have enough originality. The

industry needs more true talent.

How do you separate yourself from other artist?

I remain humble! I’m just a different breed. I make sure I can only be imitated but never duplicated. Everything that you would have to go to 3 or 4 different shows for, I do it in one show. I act, sing, rap, play and just try to release everything that

is inside of me. God put this in me and he gets all the glory.

What is unique about your music?

I would say it’s universal. I feel like I connect with any audience because of my diversity. One song may have 3 different genres. My first single”Cold days in

July” is a good example of R&B, Soul and Rock. Have you ever seen a female on stage singing or rapping and pull out a trumpet and play too? That’s what makes my music unique because it’s just something new and exciting to see. God made

me Unique so that I could be able to reach everyone and one day I will.

If you could change something in the world with your music, what would it be?

I would change hearts and the minds of the lost people who feel that they have to possess material things to be happy. I want my music to give hope and

encouragement to make it in this cold world. I Dream big!

Musicventure 19

Page 23: Musicventures 2nd edition

Would you ever become mainstream to make more money?

Yes, I would love to have a better life for me and my son but it will be for more than the money. I feel that I would have a better chance to reach a bigger audience and possibly change lives. The more lives I touch then the more I do what I was purposed to do. It’s not about me; it’s about God’s plan for my life. Becoming

mainstream is actually where I’m headed.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

I would love to work with John Legend, Fantasia, Miguel, Missy Elliot, Andre3000, Wale, J.Cole, Ginuwine, Dream, Timberland and the list goes on.

Where are you from?

Georgia born-N-raised baby.

How long have you been rapping?

I’ve been behind the microphone going on 7 years now.

How do you define your style?

I’d say it’s somewhere at the crossroads of an emphasis on lyricism & commercial viability. I try to bring the best of both worlds. Something you can ride to that

doesn’t compromise my lyrical integrity, you know?

Who influences or has influenced/inspires your music?

Man, honestly music is my influence. Pretty much any artist from any respective genre that takes their craft seriously & legitimately delivers with the music inspires

me to do my thing.

What are your thoughts on the current state of hip-hop?

I think Hip Hop is headed in a great direction. It’s slowly but surely making its way back to a time when a higher value was placed on the meaning behind your lyrics,

at least to some degree. And that’s not to down the records that don’t place as much emphasis on lyrical ability, I just think there should be an even balance. Given

time, I think we’ll make it to that point.

Would you ever become mainstream to make more money?

Well, that depends on your definition of mainstream. If by that you mean compromising the integrity of my music in hopes of monetary gain, then absolutely

not. But if by mainstream, you mean creating music that caters to the general population, I honestly see no issue with that. I most certainly believe the latter can

be accomplished without altering the uprightness of one’s craft.

What project are you working on currently?

I’m currently working on an album entitled “Invictus” that will be released before the years out. It’s a concept album that centers around the theme of perseverance.

It’s about 85% finished.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

Man, I’d love to work with anyone that’s passionate about their craft. Talented artists with conviction and ill ass beats.. That’s the recipe man. Let’s get it.
