One point may be of some im-portance ; and I mention it be-cause it is my impression thatto journalists facts are sacred.

Your editorial column headed" Scapegoats" includes thestatement that " Musicians whowere ready to play were gladlyaccepted ; most of them wereMU members." A statement ofthis kind should not be madewithout evidence.

I do not know whether thereis any list available of the musi-cians who were "ready to play"or of those who were "gladlyaccepted." Certainly only asmall proportion of those whoappeared on the platform, oractually played were membersof the Union,

It should not be overlookedthat Union membership is oftenclaimed by non-members ; andit is quite possible that someclaimed it at the Jazz Concertsto support the " line " that mem-bers were ignoring Union in-structions. In fact, very few didSO.

6 Is Jazz Dying ?

THEstage has gone a little

further than dying ; we'realmost to the point of embalm-ing-that is as far as commer-cial proposition is concerned.Whether it dies or not matterslittle to the musician who playsto vent his own feelings, audi-ence or no audience. If follow-ers are needed before it can beplayed, then let's cease callingit art at all.

The reasons then for the pre-sent state of affairs can be laidon several doorsteps - firstly,the musician, with his couldn't -care -less -blast -the -fan attitude.I'm sure the club -goer realisesthat it is nothing short of amiracle that he's there at all ;whether he plays or talks aboutthe weather matters little.

Then the non-playing critics,with power of pen tell us allwhat we must do if we are tosurvive at all, and in the

attempt cut everybody's throat,their own included.

One such critic -cum -compereof a well-known West End jazzhaunt (in this case a modernone) brought dawn from thenorth what he called a " newdiscovery " (you must play inLondon before you are " dis-covered") to blow with the resi-dent trio at the aforesaid club.

After it was all over, " ourfriend " apologised to the "poorunfortunate " about the treat-ment and welcome handed outquite freely from the t'rio'sleader. In his own words : " Asfar as ... is concerned this clubis a closed shop."

Yet hardly a week had goneby before "our deliverer" askedin his weekly "gab" where thenew blood was and why out oftown jazzmen refuse London ? Iwonder if he still pretends hedoesn't know.

Next, the fans who see in jazza kind of teenage escapism.Their attempt to "go backward"has resulted in sandals andbeards, or "going forward" andscreaming at a distorted beat.This has resulted in jazz takingthe place in art that the trailerholds in modern cinema,

So while people think of jazzin these terms, we must acceptthe hand of fate as it is. In themeantime, jazzmen will stillplay and enjoy their music, car-ing little for goatees, typewrit-ers, sandals or screams.

What is Jazz ?AT the present time. there are

numerous conceptions as towhat is Jazz. To some, only themusic played up to 1927 or '28 isthe true Jazz. Others believethat nothing before the '30s and

and exciting proposition to me.If the experiments come off,

then everyone will jump on theband waggon to shout " I toldyou so ". Maybe bongoes etc.,wouldn't have helped Dodds,Noone, Bix and Berigan, butthat is not our concern; theywere greats with what they had.In the case of British Jazz,there's no such thing, or at leastvery Lyttel. Here then is achance to make a genuine con-tribution to the evolution ofJazz.

I don't think HumphreyLyttelton or Wally Fawkes aregimmickers. I do think that astwo of Britain's leading jazzmenthey know what they are doing,and where they are going.

Maybe they will mix a Latin-American cocktail that willprove very palatable.

Then we have those of us whothink that Jazz began when thelast war started. Doubtlessthere are a few, who are stillanticipating the birth of Jazz.

Regardless of all these flutter -brained fanatics, and myopic -minded morons, jazz began (sowe are told) around the turn ofthe century, and has beenaround ever since. Quite simpleisn't it, or is it?

Let us consider just how longjazz would have survived, ifthere had been no developments,branch -offs and progressions, noEllington. Armstrong. Hender-son, Basie, Parker or Herman,even Whiteman and Ted Lewis,for they showed the way thatJazz shouldn't develop. With-out these evolutionary periods,Jazz would have become stag-nant and meaningless.

In spite of this, there remainmany " knowledgeable " Jazzcritics who refuse to accept pro-gress if it doesn't match theirpersonal conceptions of Jazz.Hector Stewart seems to havejoined this unimaginative gi oupof people, qualified by his attackon the application of Latin-American rhythms to traditionalJazz (NME 4/7/52).

Hector accepts the fusion ofmodern Jazz and Latin-Ameri-can rhythms yet rejects theattempts of Humphrey Lyttel-ton's group to apply the samerhythms to traditional Jazz,Why? Surely this is a develop-ment that could revive the flagg-ing interest in traditional Jazz.

Using the traditional melodicand harmonic forms with aLatin-American rhythmicalfoundation sounds an interesting

Well, I suppose this might be

one way of doing it-if enoughpeople joined in the BunyardProtest Movement, but person-ally I think the only way is forthe British musicians them-selves to do something about itwith their Union. After all, ifall the Union members attendedthe meetings as they are sup-posed to do, and voiced theirdisapproval of the existing ban(or would it be approval?) thensurely they could bring the mat-ter to a head so that the Unionas a body would have to recon-sider the whole question.

I am a working musician andtherefore mix with manyUnion members. Frankly I havebeen most surprised to hearnearly everyone I have spokento say that they would like tosee the best bands and soloistsfrom the USA allowed to comeinto the country to work; thatthey do not consider this wouldcreate unemployment, butrather that the fillip such visitswould give the music industryas a whole would quickly re-create a keen interest every-where-in dance halls, theatres,clubs, and thus bring nothingbut benefits to the British pro-fessional musicians.

It seems others, like myself,remember the days when wehad Duke Ellington, Louis, andothers here, and what a " shot -in -the -arm " the music busi-ness got from their short visits !

Café Anglais in Leicester Square. The Managementhave decided to do some economising, as a result ofwhich George Chisholm, trombone and piano, isnow working under notice.

Jimmy says he'll be sorry to leave Jack's finenew band, but is looking forward to a job whichmeans no travelling, and which will give him timeto lower his already formidable golf handicap.

AT the Ambrose broadcast rehearsal last FridayI had a chat with latest arrival from Canada,

trumpeter Ellis McLintoch. Back in Toronto, Ellis isa pretty busy fellow, does a stack of radio work,and is able to maintain a wife, two children, a largehouse and a new Pontiac automobile.

Don't want to be pessimistic, Ellis, but thereain't any trumpet players over here who can man-age those luxuries! Good luck to you, anyway, ifyou decide to stay here!

* * *IF the boys on the Braden show do not sound their

usual merry selves over the air this week, youmight like to knew that owing to Bernie Bradenbeing commissioned to make a new film, BBC pro-ducer Pat Dixon had to have the programme re-corded on Sunday morning. and made the " call "for nine o'clock-a.m. that is!

Bad enough if you live in town, but for the boyswho live further out-oh, brother!

SEQUEL to the story I told you last week, con-cerning drummer Bobby Kevin, who went for

a swim but had to change a flat tyre in OxfordStreet instead.

Well, on the way home that very same evening,Bobby had reason to get out of his car, and to hishorror discovered his boot door was missing. Rea-lising that it must have dropped off en route, heabout-faced and went back in search of it.

Nothing happened until he reached WestminsterBridge, where to his dismay he witnessed a " help-ful gentleman " heaving said boot door over thebridge and into the Thames!

If you see a blue Hillman saloon, minus a coverfor its boot-that'll be Bob's.

* * *CURPRISED to learn from trombonist George" Rowe the other day that for some strange rea-son, many, many people seem to think he left " thebusiness " when he left the Skyrockets at the Lon-don Palladium.

I hasten to make it known to all and sundry, onGeorge's behalf; that he has not and did not leavethe profession, and is still very much in it. At themoment he's on tour with the Ray Martin -DannyKaye show.

SEVERAL of the boys on this tour (Eric Breeze,Jack Bentley, Dave Shand, and one or two

more) took the opportunity whilSt in Newcastle todrop in to say hello to George Evans, resident atthe Oxford Galleries.

They've all come back with the news that Georgehas a pretty sensational band building up there-nine saxes. four trumpets, one trombone, fourrhythm-and should make a welcome addition tobands to listen to, very soon now.

Saxes get some interesting " doubles "-fourtenors and five baritones, and all that sort of thing.Trust George to make full use of tone -colour in hisarrangements. When do we get to hear this bandover the air, I wonder?

BRIGHTEST bit of news to hit the NME officeson Monday was when jazz -page writer Jimmy

Asman dropped in, looking very bronzed, toquietly tell all and sundry that over the week -endhe visited a nudist camp for the first time . .. andthoroughly enjoyed it!

He went along with some friends, and in no timeat all was swimming in a fine natural pool, andsunbathing. Says the funniest thing is that it isextremely difficult to recognise anyone there-justas if everybody wore exactly the same colourclothes in the street! Something in that, come tothink of it!

RAN into that well-known drummer Max Abramsa day or so ago, and he tells me he is kept

very busy these days teaching the younger genera-tion to become proficient drummers, in additionto his freelance BBC work.

Max has just moved to a new house in Hamp-stead, and before he left his old address, threw afarewell party for his next door neighbours, Afterdinner Max's " neighbours " - ballerina MoiraShearer and her writer -husband Ludo Kennedy,

* * *STOOD on the steps of Aeolian Hall, in company

with the cream of the session boys, and acouple of 'bandleaders when a smart and sportily -attired gentleman approached, making a dignifiedentrance past the profession's lesser lights ...onlyto stumble as he walked up the steps.

Turned out to be famed bandleader Geraldo, whorecovered his equilibrium, and addressing the littlecrowd, suggested the incident would doubtless bereported in this column

He then made to enter Aeolian Hall, but suddenlystopped, removed his sunglasses, and said : " That'sin case you didn't recognise me !"

* * *LAST Saturday evening American pianist Ralph

Sutton, from Eddie Condon's Club in NewYork City, joined the party at the Georgian Club.Ralph was asked to sit in with Johnnie Gray'sband, and received a wonderful ovation from thesotiety register clubites. He enjoyed the sessionimmensely, afterwards remarking that Johnnie'soutfit was about the jumpiest group he has heardin the West End.

The leader's future activities include a furthercricket game for the Handlebar CC, who are play-ing Godstone on Sunday next. The side will again

*ATTENDED the Cyril Stapleton broadcast on

Tuesday (15th). Here is a fine band whichplays all kinds of music, from jazz to marches. Onething on which I would like to commend the bandis the formality of its attire. Not one membersports a zoot suit, flash shirt, crew cut or Diz specs,which comes as a welcome relief after some ofthe bands I have seen around.

Incidentally composer -conductor Bob Farnonhas penned an original for Cyril's outfit which fansshould listen for in the near future. Aptly titled" Pow -Wow," it certainly is ! Great stuff, Bob !

LEFT home very early one morning last week,with instructions to wife to 'phone trombonist

George Chisholm to book him for a date. Puttingthrough the call at 7.30 a.m. she confirmed thedate and then apologised to him for getting himout of bed so early, remarking : " Shall you begoing back to bed now ? " Back along the linecame George's voice, from his flat where he wasstanding in his pyjamas. " No, I think I'll go outto a dance !"

* * *CYD RAYMOND, drummer on the " Queen Mary "" blew into the NME offices this week, freshback from the States again. He made many callswhilst he was in New York, and managed to con-tact his old pal George Shearing, who is doingOK, by the way.

But the bit that made me laugh was Syd tellingushow he was getting from George the names ofthe boys with him now in his group. He wascalling out the instrument and George was givinghim the name of the player. Suddenly Syd said:" Piano ? " Back came the snappy answer : " IzzyGarfinkel !" Nice work, -George.

* *ANYBODY want an odd -job man for a week or

two ? I know of a good man free right now-sense of humour, fund of tip-top stories. andnever at a loss for a word. Benny Lee is the name-he's been around the West End these last fewdays prior to taking his annual vacation now thatthe Braden show has come off the air for the sum-mer-and everyone he's met he's asked : " Got anywork for an out -of -work actor ? " Don't take thisseriously, girls-he's only kiddin' !

" That's all very well,"you say . . . " but that's forthe Ted Heaths andGeraldos-it doesn't affectroe.,,

YOU are leader of a smallseven- or eight -piece groupsomewhere out of town. Youhave, say, four saxes, trumpet,piano, bass, drums. You setgood tempos, allow no smokingon the stand and insist that yourboys are smoothly turned outand start on time.

You are even lucky enoughto have perhaps a second altowho occasionally, with muchprodding and several falsestarts, turns out in his ownlaboriously smudgy way, a bop-pish special to please the boys-and those scattered tans wholike that sort of thing.

GlamourAnd you are quietly proud of

the way you announce over themike . . . that crystal clear dic-tion . . . that glowing smile.

" What more can I do ? " yousay.

" You too, can have glamour,"say the people who know."More glamour-more money."

For the small bandleader asabove, adequate though his out-fit is, there are ways of creatinga greater demand for his ser-vices.

Give people that little extrathe other bands don't give. Byall means give them goodspecials, but more particularlygive them vocals-for in vocaltreatment, comedy and serious,lies the secret of that "littleextra."

Maybe our out -of -town -leaderhas noted that when one of hisboys has stepped forward andshouted a raspy and not alto-gether -in -tune "Gandy Dancer'sBall," or something similar,there has been fair responsefrom the crowd.

Maybe he has stretched hispocket and added a femalevocalist-complete with eveninggown-and found after all thatit paid.

Today, it does pay a leaderto consider inserting as manyvocal numbers in his pro-gramme as possible. Nevermind what the jazz critics say.We like jazz-but we also likebread and butter.

And with so many smallbands already jumping on thevocal wagon, it might pay aleader to go one step furtherand form a vocal group.

It's not as hard as it, sounds.* * *

INGREDIENTS: A lead voice,preferably female, and three orfour boys from the band whohave a rough idea of croakingin pitch-and what musicianshaven't? *

THE MIXTURE: Take thelead girl on melody linethroughout. The men fill outthe chord underneath like saxesunder a lead alto, although ifwritten for in treble clef, theyappear to be singing an octaveabove the girl.

*SERVE: At the beginning,

For the best results the leadshould be firm-not to be con-fused with hard-and should beable to hold a note steady with-out wobbling. There should beabsolutely no tremolo (some-times called vibrato).

Tremolo is a rhythmical up-and-down wavering of the voicewhich many singers affect. Itmakes a harsh, badly trainedvoice sound sweeter. Also,although they don't realise itbecause it happens so quickly,their voices are going as muchas a tone or two tones aboveand below the true note. Thisthrows intonation in a group.

A true vibrato is an on -and -off pulse in the voice. It isnatural in a well -trained voice,should have little or no affecton the intonation, and is badfor the singer to try to cut out.

NOT SO IMPORTANTProviding they sing a tune

and balance up to the lead, thetone of the men's voices is notso important.

Best results naturally comefrom the best voices, but if acompromise is necessary, Iwould rather have soft, flat,toneless in -tune voices hugginga mike for balance, than fruityresonant rich tones accom-panied by the usual tremolo.

Toneless in -tune voices don'tsound bad if the lead is good.

First tenor should be able toget high G or A (in treble clefoctave and half above middleC). Bottom voice needn't gomore than a couple of tonesbelow middle C-easy for abaritone.

BILLSHEPHERDclose harmony all the way. Iffive voices are used, that wouldmean bottom doubling leadthroughout.

As those who have written forfour- or five -piece sax -teamswill know, sometimes better andricher sounds can be obtainedby opening up the chord. Butcare should be taken withvoices; unless singers are good,the more open the chord, therougher the intonation.

How about a number like theWhiffen-poof Song ?

The various verses can betreated as solos. We all joinin a resounding unison chorusand just break into harmonyevery time we sing the Baa, BaaBaa's. It's easy . . effective,and they'll applaud..

It might be as well to treatthe first three or four numbersby the group just like that. Bagsof unison and solos, and har-mony here and there for theadded effect. Remember tofinish on a good chord.

Very few numbers will have REHEARSINGa small enough range for the Don't try head arrangements.group to sing in harmony Make sure there's a score, thethroughout. The arranger will parts are clear and all thehave to fiddle. words are under the right notes.

If the singers aren't goodreaders let them learn theirharmony parts one at a timelike separate melodies.

IN a New York apartmentatop Carnegie Hall lives

the Svengali of show busi-ness or if you prefer, thepresent-day Pygmalion.

The wonder of Phil Mooreis that he has been so muchmore prolific than his pre-decessors, factual and fic-tional. The personalitiesthat he has moulded andvitalised are the archangelsin a wolves' paradise -yet they tell only one chap-ter in the story of the amaz-ing Mr. Moore.

The story began in Portland,Oregon, only thirty-four yearsago. Four years after that, ayoungster was taken to his firstpiano lesson and in no time atall he was precociously perchedupon local concert platforms,virtuoso soloist with the Port-land Junior Symphony.

" They tried to turn me intoan infant prodigy," Phil re-members, " and the way I usedto murder the concertos was no-body's business !"

But the old masters wereeventually able to rest peace-fully in their graves once again,for at the age of thirteen some-thing important happened inyoung Moore's life.

First Jobs" I turned my back on the

classics, on account of an offerI had to join Louis Richard -son's Rinky-Dinks," he unblush-ingly recounts.

The first few jobs Philworked as a jazzman were at asoda fountain, and he was paidoff in malted milks. Then thefamily moved to Seattle, Wash-ington, and for Phil, this provedto be a significant shift; it ledto his initial engagement asvocal coach, arranger and ac-companist to a number of sing-ers.

The period was circa 1932,and the two most importantthings on America's mind weredepression (financial) and pro-hibition (alcoholic).

" My folks had lost theirmoney, and it was necessary forme to work after school. Putthat down as plot -laying stuff "advised our eloquent inter-viewee.

" I found a speak-easy thatwas willing to employ me-thatwas what we called an illicitliquor joint, you know-but byway of salary, I had to rely ex-clusively on tips. I don't recallthe name of the place, but it

was a dimly -lit room, and therewould be five, six or seven en-tertainers wandering from tableto table, and singing as theywent.

" It was hard enough tryingto find a key that fitted themall, but when one of themstarted out on Yes Sir, That'sMy Baby' before another hadfinished Road To Mandalay'confusion really did set in!

" There was a kitty in frontof the rostrum, and my share ofthe take was one -eighth of fiftyper cent. The boss took theother half, and charged us fiftycents a night for the hire ofuniform jackets on top of that.We would keep right on untilthe last drunk had beenbounced out, or fallen underthe table."

Piano TravelBetween times, Phil yawned

his way through high school,and majored in music at theUniversity of Washington. Hehad reached the age of eighteen,and that seemed as good a timeas any to go out into the worldand learn the facts of life.

A bandleader who could helphim here was one Eli Rice, self -acknowledged doyen of theWest Coast circuit, and it sohappened that the piano stoolwas vacant just when Moorewas wanting to see what laybeyond his native heath.

" Eli really did know his wayaround every neck of the woodsfrom Washington State to NewMexico " his former protegeacknowledges. " We wouldseem to be in the middle of anuncharted desert, then someonewould switch on a flashlightand behold, there was a pavi-lion. We would set up thestands, and before we knew it,the hall was full of people.Where they came from, whowill ever know ? I guess theprairie dogs used to take overwhen the dance was through."

Chordal StyleSeveral such trips were be-

hind him when Phil found thatthe Californian climate suitedhim best, and decided to stayput at the southern end of theaxis. He worked with severalgroups, and was fired fromthem all-" I was altogether toosmart-alecky," he admits,

" I liked to think of myselfas a Tatum -style pianist, butone day in 1937, a friend ofmine, Marshall Royal. the clari-nettist, was scheduled to makescme records with Art, and Iwent along to the session. Theymade ' With Plenty Of Money

As we know, Moore promptlychanged his mind, but thechordal style he switched to -and, some say, originated, Mil-ton Buckner notwithstanding -was a wilful recognition of thefact that he, for one, hadrealised the odium of compari-sons.

Working for a spell behindIda Cox, " A real earthy bluesmoaner who later got -a freshlease of life at the GreenwichVillage Café Society," Phil wasapproached by a very youngDorothy Dandridge who askedhim to advise and rehearse avocal trio she had formed withher sister Vivian, and EttaJones as second and third mem-bers. Not unnaturally heagreed, and thus was the Dan-dridge Sisters' act started onthe road to success, later becom-ing the vocal group in theJimmy Lunceford Band.

Then Lena Home first flashedacross the Hollywood scene.She was signed to appear in anindependent all -Negro featur-ette entitled, for some obscurereason, " The Duke Is Tops,"and Phil was engaged as musi-cal director.

Film WriterStill in the late 1930's, he

worked on a sequence in theMarx Brothers' film " A Day AtThe Races " at MGM and thisfired him with the ambition tobe a regular staff writer at thecompany's colossal studios.

" I went along for an inter-view," he reminisces, " and theywere very charming and polite,but it all added up to the factthat I was far too inexperiencedfor the sort of post I had inmind."

Yet it was not long before theambitious youth had workedhis way on to the MGM payroll,as rehearsal pianist in the firstplace, later as musical adviser,arranger and conductor.

Some of the movies he wasconnected with were " Present-ing Lili Mars" (starring JudyGarland), " Ziegfeld Girl " (agigantic production with LanaTurner, Tony Martin, Judy Gar-land and a cast of hundreds)." Kismet " and " Cabin In TheSky " (he was head musicsupervisor for both of these andpersonally appeared in the lat-ter), and Lena Horne's firstfeature for the company," Panama Hattie."

" I wrote a song for Lena tosing on her MGM debut-it wasa mixture of Spanish and swingcalled ' The Sping.' I men-

tion this because the othersongs in the score were by ColePorter, so goodness knows whythey wanted any extramaterial." Phil explains.

For other organisations, therewere free-lance opportunitiessuch as " This Gun For Hire."" Palm Beach Story " and " MyFavourite Blonde " at Para-mount and Fred Astaire's " TheSky's The Limit " for RKOwhich had a memorable bar-room sequence conceived byPhil as setting to the number" One For My Baby And OneMore For The Road." Muchmore recently he re -transcribedthe same song for Jane Russellto sing in " Macao," first shownin the West End last month.

directly, as a result of his posi-tion on the scoring staff of JackTeagarden's band. Jack andhis men were given consider-able footage in Paramount's" Birth Of The Blues " withBing Crosby and Mary Martin,and Phil was included in thedeal as arranger -in -chief.

Moore's benevolent and help-ful interest in the careers of theDandridges and Lena Home didnot pass unacknowledged in thetrade, especially after " ShooShoo Baby " which, he says," Lena inspired me to compose "had topped the Hit Parade forseventeen weeks.

Jimmy Walker QuartetFreddie Randall and his

OrchestraMOST times I have listened

to this show, the title hasstruck me as being somewhatmisleading. In fact, even to thefaintly informed listener, thedifference in style was neverobvious enough to warrantsuch a pointed, descriptiveheading.

The contrast, however, be-tween the offerings of Messrs.Walker and Randall basicallydoes provide some authenticityfor its existence, and is a policythat should be continued. Thatis, if the BBC regard the useof titles for nearly all theirband shows as anything otherthan a means of space filling inthe " Radio Times."

I use the word " basically,"because technically speakingthese two outfits, although pur-porting to be of the violentlyopposed " bop " and " Dixie "factions, are, with the excep-tion of influence, nothing of thesort.

Both have taken a differentidiom, dressed it up in mannerthat would appeal to themasses rather than the min-ority, and have gone as near" commercial " as a fans' bandcan go without resorting tocomplete desertion.

Well, I suppose that is theirbed, and they must lie in it, butI've no doubt that it is a verycomfortable bed, and the typethat can always be allotted acosy spot in the BBC. Is thisbad? Only, I think, from thepoint of view of critics whoput their pets in large print,but couldn't care less aboutthem starving in a garret.

Of course, we'd all lilee toplay the music that we like, butif the people who pay thepiper to play their piece, don'tlike it, let's have our own funin our own time, and get onwith the job.

So, with the premeditatedintent of these two 'intelligentgentlemen in mind, let me con-gratulate them on a very goodbroadcast.

Mr. Randall has a very" beaty " band indeed. The factthat it was an unorthodox four -beat, with most of the soloistsforgetting their best " SouthernGentlemen " manners by play-ing near " boppish " phrases,didn't escape me.

But neither did the fact thatthey are all very good instru-mentalists, and the lattershould come first in anybody'sestimation.

A word of criticism-the"half valve" effect of FreddieRandall's trumpet ceases to be-come effective when overdone.Whether the trombonist's" buzz " in the middle registeris an effect or a defect, I don't

know. In either case, I shouldcease to affect it.

Diana Coupland fitted in" Randall Revels " like the ex,perienced " free-lance " perfor-mer she is, and it was a pleas-ant change in her songs not toneed English sub -titles.

Mr. James Walker and hisQuartet I reviewed quite re-cently and am glad to see thattheir talent has been recog-nised, inasmuch as they havebeen re -booked on the air sospeedily. There's nothing muchmore I can add to my previous

If this is to be the meagrereason for providing a band'sstyle title, there's no reasonwhy Dr. Crock shouldn't playthe " Pizzicato " from BalletSylvia, and qualify for Sadler'sWells. Still, maybe it was amisprint in the " Radio Times."

I have a great liking forLatin-American rhythms, andtheir fundamental object, whichis to provide a magnetic attrac-tion to the dance floor, seldomfails to persuade me to swing asly hip.

Thirty minutes of song anddance music that could havebeen produced by British per-formers thirty times better, andif it's the French atmospherethat was supposed to be theattraction, rather than what wasoffered, an improvement wouldhave been the inclusion of Mon -sewer Eddie Gray.

Just what entertainment themajority of BBC listeners gotout of interminable French dia-logue, unending French pointnumbers ond unattractiveFrench jazz, I can't imagine. On

The little lady who adornedto -day's proceedings, however,was such an asset to the pro-gramme, I feel it is necessaryto look for another theory.

DON CARLOS AND HISSAMBA BAND

WHY this outfit was labelleda " samba " band, I can't

imagine. Even the announcerhinted that the inclusion of anitem with this rhythm was anovelty event. Towards the endof the programme he proudlyproclaimed here was TheSamba.

Jimmy Walker is in the reviews on this page, so here is atopical picture of him (left) recording for Melodist with his

outfit last week.

Maybe it's " anno domini "creeping up on me, or maybeit's a case of " corpus delecti"on the part of the Carlos car-case, but I'm afraid during thishalf-hour not even one of mygoose -pimples twitched amuscle.

I can't define exactly what itwas that accounted for thelethargic reaction on my part,for there's no doubt that therewere some extremely good in-strumentalists involved. Theflautist, for instance, had atechnique and tone whichwere superb. His solo in" Sugar Loaf " savoured ofacademic training and wasthe most listenable moment inthe show.

Don Carlos himself, who asthe pianistic leader, I gatheredwould stand out as a salientfeature, confined himself to anodd bar or so here and there.This, I think, is a mistake. Ifa leader is to forsake the batonfor his instrument, then heshould justify the move by ap-pearing frequently in the lime-light.

Don Carlos has got a veryforceful but individual styleand although I admire him fornot adopting the egotisticalattitude taken by several otherpianistic bandleaders I knowof, it `wouldput more of per-sonality stamp on the show ifthe arrangements were wovenaround him more often.

The vocalists could be lis-tened to but not lauded.

Opinion: Inspired rather ashrug than shimmy.

THE only surprise about thisprogramme was the fact

The Camille Sauvage Orches-tra must be heard to be believed.But if you don't want an ordealin the cause of credulity, it'sunderstandable.

Whilst holidaying on theFrench Riviera. I heard theAimee Barelli Orchestra manytimes in person. As a societyband, it is of a standard thatcan compete with most that wehave to offer. As purveyor ofstylish jazz, it is in the wrongsociety.

Its opening gambit was theambitious title " New Rhythm."If warmed -up " boogie woogie "

with soloists trying hard to ke,eptheir heads above the " bop "water is new rhythm, then takeyour partners for a " gavotte " !

Aimee Barelli as a trumpeteris a brilliant player, but unfor-tunately belongs to the greatarmy of musicians who wereweaned on a style of a differentera, and in spite of franticefforts to move with the times,simply can't catch up.

Throughout the whole show.the balance was strictly up" Frenchman's Creek." However,the music nearly drowned themany vocals and from what Iheard of them, I see the engin-eer's point.

Opinion. A Norman invasionthat didn't come off.

JAZZ CLUBSaturday, July 12, 5.30 to

6 p.m. LightIT would seem that our radio

has contracted a slight attackof the French disease this week,for even your favourite " discjockey " programme, sometimescalled " Jazz Club " has suc-cumbed.

Pat Brand, an eminent jour-nalist in our profession, pre-sented a recording of an excerptfrom the recent Paris " JazzFestival." Let him be thankfulfor the American in Paris, Sid-ney Bechet. The genius of thisgentleman who has grown oldso gracefully, surmounted every-thing.

" Everything," I must add, waswhat the accompanying Gaelicgroup seemed to put into theirvociferous efforts, and if everthere was a more glaringexample of "brawn over brains,"than Monsieur Rivalotti and hishenchmen, it should at once betransported to Helsinki. ClaudLuter, ditto.

Mr. Brand informed us thatwhenever Bechet and his Pari-sians came on the air, everybartender in Paris rushed to theradio, and turned it up.

If our grand old man of NewOrleans can't get a better sup-porting sound than this, I sug-gest he " turns it up " altogetherthis side of the Atlantic, andunless our Musicians' Union un-bends, takes a one-way ticketback to Basin Street.

apologise to you, my readers,and to a certain gentleman ofthe profession, a guitarist.

When I reviewed the Joe Sayedisc last week, I gave quite arave to it, and in particular tothe guitarist on it. I told you hisname was Joe Mears. Why, I'veno idea!

His name, ladies snd gentle-men, is Johnny Wiltshire. Italways has been Johnny Wilt-shire, and doubtless will alwaysbe so.

Sorry, Johnny, very much forthe mistake (how lucky itwasn't a panning!), but I trust,gentle readers, you now knowthat when you listen to thatgreat Saye record, and theguitar -playing on it, you are lis-tening to Johnny Wiltshire.Nobody else.

The accompaniment, by DaveCavanaugh's Orchestra, is first-rate, and notice that althoughthey have to play a fast shufflerhythm all through the side, therhythm section is balanced justright, and the bass and drumscan be heard at all times!

I am afraid the reverse sideis only fair, with Kay doing afemale impersonation ofJohnnie Ray, backed by a justso-so arrangement. First side isworth hearing, though.

"Casey Jones""Turkey In The Straw "

Heath crew. "Casey " istaken at an easy jump tempo,and features the clean -soundingsaxes, led by that exceptionallyfine lead alto -man, Leslie Gil-bert, and also the well -drilledtrombone team, playing a goodopen passage here.

But once again I come to mypet moan. Why is the bass madeto sound indistinct and thedrums too under -recorded? Oncemore the rhythm section goesfor a " ball of chalk", and inthis case the band's final ride -out, with the rhythm sectionmissing, just doesn't jump theway it should! Is there a doctorin the house?

Don't be alarmed by the flip -side title. It's not a squaredance effort, but a very good

arrangement of the traditionaltune, which although it adheresclosely to the melody allthrough, is nevertheless inter-esting. There's a good mutedtrumpet solo, and my compli-ments to the baritone playerfor getting a real baritone noise-that's more like it!

Good Heath, but not outstand-ing.

too fast for the tune. I al-ways like my " Feeling " slow,and here it's a bit uncomfort-able.

As for the vocal group, theyare no help at all to Ella-com-plete miss-fitz! Main trouble isthe girl lead, who exaggeratesand has a poor idea of a blend.Ella sings well though.

Reverse, with a Sy Oliver ac-companiment, is only a fairversion of this tune. This is notoutstanding Fitzgerald, but shecan still show most girl singersa thing or two in phrasing.

his material, and is graduallyworking his way through thelist of evergreens, " skimmingthe cream " so to speak.

" When Your Lover " is con-spicuous for a driving, rockinglast chorus, quite exciting, andproving that the whole band isvery much alive and kicking.There's a spot of good tenor, too,which is also a featured instru-ment on the reverse side-justas good-and ends with one lastluscious slurp.

NB to Recording Engineers:Notice how the rhythm sectionis balanced and recorded. It isas light as a feather, with analmost harp -like quality, but itpacks a mighty wallop andswings all the time, like a well-oiled machine!

these sides are vocals, there areno names given on the label,making a sort of musical dip-yer pays yer money, buys therecord . . . and only then canyou tell whether it has a vocalor not.

Yet in the case of " Sin " Ican quite see the point.in omit-ting the vocalist's name becauseMiss Anonymous is nothing towrite home about. She is justanother girl singer with intona-tion trouble and a phoneyAmerican accent. If she'sAmerican, it's a phoney Englishaccent!

The band behind her is rag-ged and badly balanced, with amonotonous chug -chuggingrhythm section, and the ar-rangement is tenth -rate hackstuff.

Reverse is a tune extolling thevirtues of Blackpool Tower andtells of " jiving on the pier."Are you kiddin', bud? HereMiss Anonymous is joined by aMr. Anonymous who has theright idea, being a disciple ofthe Johnny Mercer school ofsingers.

Band again is poor and fea-tures a spot of cumbersomepiano-awfully stilted. You'veheard tell of " locked hands "style-so now let's welcome in anew vogue. Locked fingers!

ALTHOUGH Sumac packedthe Albert Hall recently, on

her first visit to this country,the music critics without failgave her a very poor showing,and comments were pretty

severe-most unfairly so, to mymind.

Quite frankly, I'm of theopinion that what she sings, hermaterial and the way she putsit over, is way over the headsof most people, and I includethe music critics. Maybe I'm anexception, but her voice thrillsme, and although I don't mindadmitting that I can't under-stand everything she does, I findthat her amazing voice has agripping and compelling qualitywhich is unique, and quite un-matched in the music world.

Through all of the six sidesunder review she displays anamazing variety of exception-ally diverse talents. " Inca LoveSong " finds her singing a duetwith herself (dubbing, I pre-sume?) and there are somereally frightening growls by thePeruvian Nightingale. The sideends with a most blood -chillingscream, which scared the day-light out of me!

Reverse is enhanced by somefine modern -scored string pas-sages. bongoes, too, are mosteffective. " Suray Surita " makesfar more sense, and is a sort of" Peruvian Pop," sung withgreat intelligence and emotion.Reverse is a gay Latin-Ameri-can affair, backed by a rousingmale chorus.

But the best coupling by faris of " Babalu " which is thebest version I've heard of theLecuona classic-on this theSumac girl is terrific. There is amost unusual flute intro, whichgrowls for a few bars, and diesout suddenly as if the poor guyhas been strangled! Effectivestuff!

On the back, " Wimoweh " isthe biggest surprise of all. Forno reason at all, Yma is backedhere by a big jumping band,with fine beat -y rhythm andbrass sections, which soundssuspiciously like the Billy MayOrchestra to me.

Tune is of the " HawaiianWar Chant" ilk, and here Ymadoes an Ella Fitzgerald, impro-vising around the melody. Allthe sides are directed by herguitarist husband, who is alsothe composer of the first fourtitles.

My choice is for the lastcoupling, which would addlustre to any collection. I'mexpecting a comedy version anyday now, by Mickey Katz. Howabout " Inca Dinca Doo," for asuggestion, Mr. Katz?

For SongmenON TUESDAY night, over 120 notabilities in

the world of British popular music settleddown to enjoy an excellent repast andsome witty speeches at the fifth anniver-sary dinner of the Songw: iters' Guild ofGreat Britain. The evening was a con-vivial one, and the tone of the gatheringwas set by such witticisms as Ted Kava-nagh's announcement of the top song ofthe moment as "Auf Davidson, Sweetheart!"Chairman Douglas Furber (always en-shrined in the hearts of jazz -fans by reasonof the fact that he wrote the lyrics for" Limehouse Blues ") kept up the wittywork by remarking that the Songwriters'Guild had had to turn down the applica-tion for membership of Max Factor, des-pite the fact that he had written " I'llMake Up For Everything!"

THE GUEST of honour, Mr. David Gammans,MP, the Assistant Postmaster -General.looked forward to the day when Britonswould sing songs written for them byBritish songwriters, and this sentimentevoked loud applause.

BUT DARE one be critical of so worthy andhard-working a body as the Guild? Wewere conscious of two undercurrents to allthe speeches-two inferiorities . . . twochips on the shoulder, and we are makingso bold as to point them out in the hopethat bringing the light of day into thedark places may possibly help the Guild inits very laudable objects.

WE WERE surprised to notice that, in amongall the congratulations and backslappingcustomary at a gathering of this naturetwo sections of the musical community re-ceived no mention-the publishers and thepluggers (sorry, the contact personnel!)Aithpugh Eric Maschwitz did make onerefe?ence in passing to the publishers, theunderlying feeling that we had as welistened was that there was an almostopen hostility between the men who writethe songs and the men who publish them.

IT IS conventional, and almost taken forgranted, that " underdogs " grumble atthe " overlords" in any business, and there-fore one is hardened to hearing about thebold bad publishers. But it is a seriousthlolg :when the songwriters almost flaunttheli hostility towards the men who, in thelong run, earn them their living. Thatdoes not make for co-operation or mutualunderstanding: it makes for enmity.

THAT IS one chip on the shoulder. Eventhough the publishers have, in most casesadopted the Guild's standard contract andcontinue to publish the works of Guildmembers, there is no platform or meetingground between the parties. Pity!

THE OTHER chip concerns British songs.Now this is a very delicate question, and itis very difficult for us to write about it insuch a way as to make it quite clear thatwe are absolutely patriotic and intenselyloyal to our Tin Pan Alley colleagues. Buttaking the broad view, we feel we mustsay that we cannot subscribe to the all -too -prevalent attitude that, because a songis British, it must of necessity receive bettertreatment and more favourable considera-tion than a foreign song.

WHEN OUR record reviewer reviews a newrecord, he listens to the subject matter ita detached and critical way. If it is a goodsong, he says so. If it is a bad song, heis equally honest. It does not matter tohim if it's a good or bad British or Ameri-can song; the quality of the song itself isall that counts, and that is the way theSongwriters' Guild must learn to think, ifthey are to get their whole policy on aproper basis.

BY ALL means let us cheer every time aBritish song is mentioned, and by all meanslet us kid ourselves that the music pub-lishers are big bad wolves in millionaires'clothing. But, when an organisation withthe stability and the importance of theSongwriters' Guild openly feels that way.then via strongly suggest it is time for themto get a proper perspective, more in keep-ing with the facts as they are. The best of1pck to them in all their efforts.

MU PROBE OPENS ONTHE 6 NAUGHTY BOYS'SOMETIME today (Friday), six of the musicians who

on Wednesday appeared before the London BranchExecutive of the MU, charged with " conduct detri-mental to the Union," will learn the findings of theExecutive.

Gerry Moore, Dickie DeVere,Tony Crombie, Lennie Bush,Tommy Pollard and BruceSwain walked into the MUOffices at 12.45 p.m. on Wed-nesday at the behest of theUnion, to defend themselvesagainst the charges levelled atthem, subsequent to their ap-pearance at the Royal FestivalHall on Monday, June 30, in thesame bill as Arne Domnerusand Rob Pronk.

We are given to understandthat these six musiciansstated in their defence thatthe Union official preferring thecharge was not seen either atthe door or backstage during ornrior to the concert, and no in-timation was made to them thatthey must not appear.

Meanwhile, something of amystery surrounds corres-pondence which has been ex-changed between Jack Par-nell and a senior official ofthe Musicians' Union concern-ing the appearance of Par-nell's Music Makers as sup-porting attraction to LenaHorne at Glasgow Empireand elsewhere.The NME is given to under-

stand from a usually reliablesource that the MU's complaintis directed at Jack's action in°laying with Lena's Americanaccompanying musician duringthe recent Moss Empires tourbut we were not able to get anyconfirmation from the Union ofthis.

However, London Area Or-ganiser Alex Mitchell stated onWednesday evening " Lettersof explanation were requiredfrom Mr. Parnell concerning theLena Horne tour. These ex-planations were duly receivedby the Union."

SIX years ago, at what wasthen Fischers Restaurant in

New Bond Street, a new bandwas born. Fathered by CyrilStapleton, the new baby flour-ished and prospered, and nowis regarded as one of the finestbands of its kind in the country-proof of which can be seen inthe band's overflowing engage-ment book.

To celebrate the sixth anni-versary of the Stapleton brain-child, Stapletonians past andpresent foregathered last Tues-day evening (15th) at the band'sbirthplace, now known as theCelebrite, and everyone wined,dined and danced to the musicof the Derek New group, withRobin Richmond at the organ.

Mr. L. 0. Bosworth, OBE, man-aging director of Bosworth'sMusic Publishing Company. Hewas 66.

Mr. Bosworth had been man-aging director of the well-known publishing firm for somethirty years; he was on vaca-tion in Germany when he wasseized with a heart attack anddied almost immediately.

Speaking to :the NME, Bosworth's orchestral manager,Len Munsie, said: " Mr. Bos-worth was a fine gentleman,one of the old school. His deathis a great personal loss to usall here."

the world of British popular music settleddown to enjoy an excellent repast andsome witty speeches at the fifth anniver-sary dinner of the Songw: iters' Guild ofGreat Britain. The evening was a con-vivial one, and the tone of the gatheringwas set by such witticisms as Ted Kava-nagh's announcement of the top song ofthe moment as "Auf Davidson, Sweetheart!"Chairman Douglas Furber (always en-shrined in the hearts of jazz -fans by reasonof the fact that he wrote the lyrics for" Limehouse Blues ") kept up the wittywork by remarking that the Songwriters'Guild had had to turn down the applica-tion for membership of Max Factor, des-pite the fact that he had written " I'llMake Up For Everything!"

THE GUEST of honour, Mr. David Gammans,MP, the Assistant Postmaster -General.looked forward to the day when Britonswould sing songs written for them byBritish songwriters, and this sentimentevoked loud applause.

BUT DARE one be critical of so worthy andhard-working a body as the Guild? Wewere conscious of two undercurrents to allthe speeches-two inferiorities . . . twochips on the shoulder, and we are makingso bold as to point them out in the hopethat bringing the light of day into thedark places may possibly help the Guild inits very laudable objects.

WE WERE surprised to notice that, in amongall the congratulations and backslappingcustomary at a gathering of this naturetwo sections of the musical community re-ceived no mention-the publishers and thepluggers (sorry, the contact personnel!)Aithpugh Eric Maschwitz did make onerefe?ence in passing to the publishers, theunderlying feeling that we had as welistened was that there was an almostopen hostility between the men who writethe songs and the men who publish them.

IT IS conventional, and almost taken forgranted, that " underdogs " grumble atthe " overlords" in any business, and there-fore one is hardened to hearing about thebold bad publishers. But it is a seriousthlolg :when the songwriters almost flaunttheli hostility towards the men who, in thelong run, earn them their living. Thatdoes not make for co-operation or mutualunderstanding: it makes for enmity.

THAT IS one chip on the shoulder. Eventhough the publishers have, in most casesadopted the Guild's standard contract andcontinue to publish the works of Guildmembers, there is no platform or meetingground between the parties. Pity!

THE OTHER chip concerns British songs.Now this is a very delicate question, and itis very difficult for us to write about it insuch a way as to make it quite clear thatwe are absolutely patriotic and intenselyloyal to our Tin Pan Alley colleagues. Buttaking the broad view, we feel we mustsay that we cannot subscribe to the all -too -prevalent attitude that, because a songis British, it must of necessity receive bettertreatment and more favourable considera-tion than a foreign song.

WHEN OUR record reviewer reviews a newrecord, he listens to the subject matter ita detached and critical way. If it is a goodsong, he says so. If it is a bad song, heis equally honest. It does not matter tohim if it's a good or bad British or Ameri-can song; the quality of the song itself isall that counts, and that is the way theSongwriters' Guild must learn to think, ifthey are to get their whole policy on aproper basis.

BY ALL means let us cheer every time aBritish song is mentioned, and by all meanslet us kid ourselves that the music pub-lishers are big bad wolves in millionaires'clothing. But, when an organisation withthe stability and the importance of theSongwriters' Guild openly feels that way.then via strongly suggest it is time for themto get a proper perspective, more in keep-ing with the facts as they are. The best of1pck to them in all their efforts.

on Wednesday appeared before the London BranchExecutive of the MU, charged with " conduct detri-mental to the Union," will learn the findings of theExecutive.

TWO of the Midlands mostenterprising musicians have

announced that they are form-ing a new Student Orchestra.

They are drummer Jim Biliauand saxist Jack Clarke, pro-prietors of the " Band Box ",which they opened in Wolver-hampton five years ago, andwhich is now regarded as themusical centre by local musi-cians.

In addition they have securedthe services of well-knowntrumpet player Ron Page,formerly with Teddy Foster,Ivor Kirchin and other Londonbands, and Taylor Frame, saxistand vocalist with Vincent Lad-brooke, Vernon Adcock, HedleyWard, etc., as teachers for theOrchestra.

The proposed line-up is fivesaxes, five brass, four rhythmand vocalists and rehearsalsare expected to take place on.Sunday mornings.

A venue has not yet beendefinitely fixed but alreadymany applications have beenreceived and local band -leadershave also shown some interest.

Producer Donald MacLeanhad the bright idea of teamingthe quartet (Alan Stewart,drums; Ian McLachlan, bass;Alex Shaw, piano; Bill Macnab,guitar) with Don Whyte, whoup till then had been writingchildren's stories in rhyme.

The combination of modernmusic and tongue-in-cheekpoetry proved popular, and thisnew show is in response toquite a demand from Scottishlisteners.

Arthur Rowberry and hisOrchestra are house band at allthe dates. The most recentaddition to Arthur's fine aggre-gation is ex -Al Washbrookevocalist Larry Gretton, who, ismeeting with tremendous suc-cess at his new berth.

This move comes from band-leader Freddie Barratt whofronts one of the two residentoutfits at the Grand Casino,Birmingham. For some time hehas been campaigning for stric-ter tempo in ballrooms, andcloser co-operation betweendancers and dance bandleaders.

Freddie is taking his tape re-cording unit round a number ofMidland ballrooms and bopclubs to record examples ofstrict tempo and progressivestyles while bands are actuallyin session.

FORUMThe bandleaders concerned

will then sit on a forum withprofessional ballroom dancersand boppers to hear the eccrd-ings played over and give theirviews on the respective styles.

It is believed that by arguingthings out in this way, a moresatisfactory tempo for Midlanddancers may result, and band-leaders will be left with a lotof useful information.

Freddie Barratt said: " I believe dance bands should playfor dancers and not the smallnumber of fans who appreciatecomplex playing. I also believeyou can play strict tempo thatis good to listen to as well asgood to dance to."

Having put this theory to thetest in his recent broadcast,which included no musicalgymnastics, the number of en-couraging letters he has readfrom dancer -listeners streng-thens his convictions.

Several Midland bandleadershave expressed their willingnessto take part in the forum. Mostagree it will serve an extremelyuseful purpose by getting across section of views both frommusicians and dancers.

BRIGHTON. - Royal AlbionHotel MD Richard Ames, whohas just had his contract thererenewed for the third consecu-tive season, is putting in a newmodern -style trio at the AdelphiHotel next door, to open onJuly 26 and play' six nightsweekly.

Personnel will be: Vic Connor(piano, accordion); HaroldMundell (guitar) and LenJames (bass).

Ames will front the Adelphigroup as often as Royal Albioncommitments permit, and hisLatin-American group from thelatter hostelry will also appearfrom time to time at theAdelphi.

that has been rather jealouslyguarded since Saturday June21. Les suffered a slight attackin his dressing room at theParamount Theatre in NewYork City and missed twoshows while being examinedby a hastily called doctor.

The doctor advised Les tocancel the rest of his engage-ment for a vacation, but hedecided to finish the job firstand then take it easy for awhile.

The proposed vacation will notseriously 'hamper his futurecommitments.

I view the event with more con-cern than I would usually,because all of Les's energiesare needed now for furtherwork on the act. Their NewYork showing was largely dis-appointing, drawing neitherthe crowds nor the applauseof their last appearance.

Prior to this booking, theLatin-American group will beundertaking a series of varietyengage rents on a number onecircuit, as well as their first -ever one-night stand, at Wey-mouth, as soon as SantiagoLopez returns from a visit tohis native Spain.

The Rowberry band is cur-rently resident at the Astoria,Nottingham, and has beendoing such good business thatthere is every likelihood it willbe asked to play there againnext year. Crosby to become a contractplayer at MGM ; to Ella MaeMorse, who was with FreddieSlack's brand new band in 1942when Phil fashioned the style -setting presentation of " Mr.Five By Five " that did so muchtowards putting both leader andvocalist on top ; only a fort-night ago Phil dropped in onFreddie at his new residentvenue, Billy Eckstine's " Cres-cendo " night club. There hemet the guitarist with the band-our own Dave Goldberg.Phil also worked in New Yorkwith Mildred Bailey on herweekly CBS radio show.

It is, as you must know, forhis vocal coaching that PhilMoore is probably best knownand highly respected, so aquote from him on this subjectseems very much in order :" What I try to do is to give a

known by the million -oddjazz lovers in Britain asJelly Roll Morton, claimedhe created jazz in NewOrleans around 1902, wouldrather have achieved fameas the world's champion bil-liard player, and died infear of Voodoo.

In May, 1938, Jelly RollMorton was invited to record thestory of his life for America'slong-haired Library of Con-gress. The recording took overa month, with Jelly playing thepiano of the Coolidge ChamberMusic Auditorium and talkingsoftly into the nearby micro-phone.

Only one or two completesets of albums are known to bein this country made from thishistorical recording date andthe cost of a set is nearly £50!

The story Jelly Roll Mortontold was the story of NewOrleans jazz music, born 50years ago along the muddywaters of the Mississippi River.

It's a great pity that he com-pletely vanished after makingonly four sides. But as WilliamRussell mentioned in " Jazz-men," the South Side sectionwhere Nelson lived was levelledto the ground in the mid -thir-ties, and he might just as wellhave been buried in the debris.

"Head Hop " suggests whatthe music might have soundedlike in its raw, rural state be-fore coming to town where moreprogressive exponents got holdof it.

Nelson's playing, althoughcrude by such standards, pos-sessed a compelling vitality. Italso illustrates clearly some ofthe basic characteristics of the

music and the weird dissonan-ces arrived at by the left andright hand lines.

During his performance, Nel-son converses agreeably in twovoices-a trick of Pine Top'sfrom an earlier disc. He evencopies some of Pine Top's pat-ter. It fits well with the musicand makes for an entertainingas well as an historically valu-able item.

Montana Taylor was anotherof Chicago's early boogie men,although he had the good for-tune to be run to earth and re-corded again in 1946. Like mostoutstanding boogie players, hepossesses a highly personalstyle, although on rather moreconventional lines than Nel-son's.

In his piece he commemoratesone of the South Side's mostrenowned thoroughfares, com-bining thoughtful phrasing withfine swing and enthusiasm.

THERE were several kinds ofcornet on Brighton beach

last Sunday (12th) when theCranford and Albemarle JazzClubs took coach to Brightonand presented the Crane Riverand Albemarle bands to packedbreakwaters in a pre -lunchsand -dance.

heard a broadcast by Bluescomposer W. C. Handy, whowrote " St. Louis Blues " claim-ing to be the originator of jazzand the Blues. He blew up andsent a 4.000 -word letter to theRipley " Believe It or Not "programme.

" It is evidently known,beyond contradiction, that NewOrleans is the cradle of jazz,and I, myself, happened to bethe creator in the year 1902,"stated Jelly Roll.

It was this outburst, in 1938,that gave Morton a chance toregain the spotlight he had lostfor several years. He mademore records and finally visitedthe Library of Congress to tellthe colourful tale cf NewOrleans jazz.

Morton's records, and manyare obtainable on HMV andother labels in this country,prove him to be a great ragtimepianist, a fine musician and aperfect jazz arranger. Hisnumerous recordings with hisRed Hot Peppers on HMV arenow acknowledged to beamongst the greatest jazz onwax in the world.

Jelly Roll Morton, christenedFerdinand La Menthe, sufferedfrom the music slump in theStates along with other jazzidols. Work grew less easy tofind and his recordings ceased.He too had trouble with the

Union and from 1930 saw a con-stant run of bad luck.

He met up with a West Indiansong writer and they becamebusiness partners. When theyquarrelled Jelly believed himselfto be the victim of a Voodoocurse. Coloured powder sappeared in various places inhis office and Morton was infear of his life.

He finally fell ill and died inLos Angeles in 1941. His under-taker stole the diamond set inhis front teeth, and Jelly RollMorton, " Mister Jelly Roll",robbed of hundreds of tunes andsong s during his lifetime,robbed of fame and fortunewhen he greW older, sufferedthe final indignity in his coffin.

Alan Lomax, who recordedMister Jelly Roll at theLibrary of Congress back in1938, has now published thestory of this fabulous characterof real jazz based on thescores of records he made inWashington. The book, "MisterJelly Roll " (Cassells, 18s.), isan exciting drama of jazz,American history, folk loreand Voodoo practices.It is the story of Jelly Roll

Morton, the fortunes; of a NewOrleans Creole, the " Inventorof jazz", told simply and feel-ingly by a man steeped in thesubject who writes with author-ity, intelligence and insight.

with the Locarno Jazz Band,was celebrating his last hoursof freedom on Friday, July 12,at the Catford Jazz Club whenthe band made a surprise visit.

Robin Scutt rang us up theother day to remind us of theexcellent series of jazz broad-casts on the BBC French Ser-vice -224 metres between 8.30p.m. and 9 p.m. On July 13,Robin featured the London JazzGroup, a pick-up group com-posed of Arthur Mouncey ontrumpet, George Chisholm ontrombone, Billy Amstell (clari-net), Mike McKenzie at thekeyboard, Joe Deniz and hisguitar, Tiny Winters (bass) andJock Cummings on drums.

After seven years, this is areincarnation of the jam sessiopmusic made popular by Robinand Mark White, featuringmusicians from the old Ambroseband and the RAF Quintet.

On July 20 Max Jones isscheduled to present a recitalon the Blues starting at 8.20p.m., and Denis Preston giveshis quarterly "Jazz Roundabout"on July 27, beginning at thesame time. NFJO Southern Area Bulletin,"South " has come to hand withsome more news of activities inthe " Deep South".

The main items include newsthat the Southampton RhythmClub has closed down for thesummer, the Winchester andDistrict Jazz Club has nowadded live jazz to their meet-ings in the form of the Pine CityStompers from Bournemouthand the Portsmouth Jazz Band,and several famous Southernmodern groups have broken up.

First of these is the RonnieHorler Quintet, winner of anumber of " Musical Express "contest awards. The Horlergroup also aired on BBC JazzClub last April in an outsidebroadcast from the Southamp-ton Rhythm Club. Ronnie andpianist Ray Ember are joiningBert Osborne's local danceorchestra.

Butlin's Holiday Camp recently,have long since been intro-duced to British Jazz enthus-siasts via their records on theBrunswick label.

Snub, ably handling a slidetrumpet (second cousin to atrombone), leads a small groupconsisting of Willard Brown(reeds), Bob Carroll (trumpet),Call Cobb on piano, FrankClarke (bass) and A. Godley ondrums in a 1941 recording of" Snub's Blues " on Brunswick03449.

It was in November, 1944,that your correspondent firstbecame aware that Earl Powell,featured soloist with Cootie

Williams and his Orchestra, wasno ordinarily competent hack.

A review of the band byLeonard Feather in " Metro-nome " had suggested thatthe twenty -year -old boy livedup to his name by sounding likea compromise between EarlHines and Mel Powell, buthearing was believing, thoughwhat was to be heard at theSavoy Ballroom almost passedbelief.

Here was a technician withthe kind of facility that makesall things seem possible, and a

profundity of ideas that

HERE at Sables d'Or, things" are very beautiful and veryquiet. There is so much sandthat it takes a good ton minutesto reach the sea, so I've hadplenty of time en route to rumi-nate about the jazz scene I leftbehind in London.

The present may be somewhatstagnant (see "Attack," NME,25/4/52), but as far as soloistsare concerned, the future lookspretty bright to me.

* * *There are so many young-

sters all over the country whohave the right idea and theright approach to modern jazz,and it will be a crime if theseboys are not encouraged andgiven an opportunity to developtheir ideas.

* *My personal choice for the

Outstanding New Soloist of theYear is definitely 25 -year -oldtenorman from Blackpool, RoySidwell. I've heard him on fivedifferent occasions now, andthough like the best in anysphere of life, he has his shareof " off -moments," he has neverfailed to impress me.

What I like best about Roy'splaying is the way he takesabout five choruses at a time,feeling his way round the chan-ges, and all the time building upto an inspired but always taste-ful climax.

* *Don Rendell is about the only

established star to whom I cancompare him in this respect-and talking of Don, What apleasure it always is to hearhim blow, especially when he'sfronting a rhythm section withTommy Whittle. Don't think I'veever heard two tenormen withso much mutual musicalsympathy.

* * *Reverting to the " new boy "

situation, there are severalothers around who should havematured in a couple of years orso, notably tenorman GeoffAlderson (Carl Barriteau) andJohnny Marshall (Teddy Fos-ter), both of whom have whatit takes to be stars of to-morrow.

* * *On alto, there's Geoff Taylor,

whom I haven't heard for acouple of months now, and theNorthampton boy, Roy East,

who should come to London tolearn and listen. On trombone,Tony Russell and Ken Wray(though by no means new tothe profession) are at last be-ginning to receive the recog-nition they so rightly deserve.

* * *Among the pianists, there's

Ralph Dollimore of course-themost original piano stylist we'vehad for several years; BillMcGuffie his somewhatBruebeckish inflections; HarrySouth, who's beginning to get alot of sessions now; a youngsterjust out of the RAF namedMaurice Biella; and an enigmafrom Scotland, Pat Smyth,whose work is well-known tomost London piano modernists.

* *The best young drummer I've

heard this year is Alan Ganley,now with Jimmy Walker. Ithink he'll be pretty good

And, thank goodness, at lastpeople are beginning to rea-

rise that in Phil Seaman, wehave possibly the greatest big -band drummer this side of theAtlantic.

* * *Guitarists? Ex -Fox sideman

Ray Dempsey is a name to re-member, and Ken Sykora, too.On bass, Stan Wasser and PeteBlannin are the two compara-tively new boys who stand outover the past year or so. Andthere's a bassist who also playspiano, Kenny Napper (in theArmy at the moment) who lookslike Johnny Dankworth'sbrother. Remember his name,too. He's got the right idea.

* *And last of all, trumpeters.

Here, the position is very sad.After the advent of Messrs.Hunter, Deuchar and Blair,there's been no one, and Ihaven't even heard of any pos-sible future stars. Perhaps youhave? If so, wish you'd let usknow. Surely there are some inScotland?

InspirationSince then, he has worked

spasmodically, usually with hisown trio, but his unreliablemental state has robbed Bud ofany real security.

Long and widely assessed asthe greatest of all pianists toemerge during the bop era, BudPowell hap been a source ofinspiration to almost all hiscontemporaries, His own stylecertainly stems basically fromHines, as Leonard Feather sug-gested, but a more direct com-parison can be made with BillyKyle.

Several combo sides featuringBud are available on British

labels-those with Charlie Par-ker on Savoy, such as " ChasM'The Bird " and " Donna Lee,"and " Royal Roost " with KennyClarke (HMV) are reasonablyrepresentative - but from hissolo sessions we are only offered"'Ornithology " and " You GoTo My Head " by Vogue, neitherof which could be called quin-tessence of Powell.

RecordingsIn America, two LP sets de-

voted to his work have beenput out by Mercury Records,another by Roost and a fourthby Blue Note. Between them,they display every facet of hisgreatness, from the contempla-tive " Body and Soul" (on thesecond Mercury record) to thenonchalance of " SomebodyLcves Me " and the dazzlingpyrotechnics of " Indiana "(both Roost).

There is a possibility of fur-ther Powell issues by BritishVogue, drawn from Roost orBlue Note masters, but disap-pointing sales of the " Orni-thology " " You Go To MyHead " coupling make this lessthan likely at present.

Ball filled to the brim prior to his departure forthe States, Esquire Records have come up with alucky dip.

Your reviewer has long held the opinion thatlittle Harry made a smart move when he bought abig horn to stack alongside his alto. His train ofmusical thought is best expressed in the lowerregisters, where his sound also sits most comfortablyand his control seems super -sure.

" Negotiation " is as tuneful a theme as you couldwish to meet, and the variations never fall out ofline. Not all the phrases are fresh, but they are setdown in fluent order, and Keep swinging gently along.

Ronnie's solo spot is not all one might have hopedfor, but as a unit the Trio offers an object -lesson inunanimity of purpose and rhythmic subtlety.

You may know " Cu-Ba " from Charlie Barnet'sCapitol version, or perhaps you heard the arrange-ment of it that Harry wrote for the short-lived KennyBaker band. It is a side that the boys did not reallywish to make, though as a stylised routine it has itspoints.

THE SWEDISH FANS ANDARNE DOMNERUS

WHILE most modernists con-tinue to shake their heads

in wonder at the alto wizardryof Arne Domnerus, whoseappearance at the NFJO's RoyalFestival Hall jazz concert madesense out of the shambles, atleast one of Arne's compatriotsbegs to differ.

" Domnerus gave no real ideaof what he can do" insists BjornFremer, before leaving townafter a ten-day visit. " Hiswhole individuality was lost,and all that he played was justsecondhand Parker.

" Arne is really an extremelypersonal player, you know. Thenearest comparison I can thinkof is the way Johnny Dank -worth used to sound in 1949,v hen he visited Sweden to workwith Domnerus on a series ofSidney Bechet concerts. Theyboth registered so strongly thenthat it is impossible to saywhich was the better."

Fremer, we should point out,is one of Sweden's foremost jazzexperts. He contributes to both" Estrad " and " Orkester Jour-

nalen," the country's two inter-nationally famous popularmusic periodicals, and hasspoken about jazz on the radio.

He is a student lawyer atLund University, 22 years old,and, in his own words, one whotakes music very seriously. "Iam working hard to makepeople understand that jazz isan art," he told us.

Somewhat surprisingly, henames Charlie Parker as themost intelligent musician he hasever met, and we have askedhim to elucidate this viewpointfor a future issue,

Reverting to Domnerus, Bjornstressed how disappointed Arnewas at not being able to playwith the Geraldo Orchestra onhis London appearance.

" In Sweden, there are no bigbands, and Dampen - that'swhat we call him-was lookingforward to this unique experi-ence. He had bought arrange-ments from Lars Guilin, GunnarSvenseri and Gosta Theselius, aswell as writing some himself."

" Box Biographies"IVOR RAYMONDE

BORN London, October 27,1926. First became in-

terested in music at the ageof six when he started toteach himself the piano. Atthe age of seven he com-menced piano tuition. Wonschool scholarship for TrinityCollege of Music, London,where he studied piano, har-mony, etc., until the age offifteen.

About this time his interestin music started to slack offand he left Trinity College.Some months after this Ivorwas coaxed into a local semi-professional band, playingpiano. Then joined accor-dionist Paul Heimann andplayed gigs in and aroundtown. At 18 was called up forNational. Service as a coal -miner. After nine months'service he was released fromservice as unfit.

Together Ivor and PaulHeimann joined with JohnnyDenis which was the start ofthe now well-known " Ranch-ers." After a period ofeighteen months Paul leftJohnny and Ivor bought hisfirst accordion to take Paul'splace in the outfit, also doingspecial arrangement's for thegroup, and for their manyBBC broadcasts.

Was with Johnny Denis forfour years, then had a spellwith Al Tabor at Murray's,playing piano and accordion,and with Frank Abbott asaccordionist on the " Queen

Mary." Frank took the bandto the Norfolk Hotel wherethey were resident for almosttwo years, later forming a bigband for a resident job inSouthsea.

Ivor stayed at the Norfolkand formed his own sextet,which he now leads on accor-dion and vocals

of the new British Technicolorcomedy, " Penny Princess "-and comedy it is! It's really greatand a credit to our film studios,who in the past have alwaysmanaged to achieve great emi-nence with their dramas, butnot so with their attempts atslapstick.

There's the one song, publishedby Sun Music, and which I toldyou about a couple of weeksago. It was written by ValGuest, is called, " It's a Fine,Fine Night," and I'd say it hasa great chance of success.

It's very similar to the song" It's a Grand Night for Sing-ing" (remember it?), and ifthat caught on, I don't see whythis shouldn't.

Foster is deputising forDenzil Best, who recently hada leg broken in a car accident.Unfortunately for Denzil, theleg was set but did not healproperly, so he has had to haveit broken again and re -set.

Something that will surprisereaders, I think, is that inDecember George will be play-ing a concert with the RochesterSymphony Orchestra at theEastman School of Music, inwhich he will be playing Rach-rnaninoff's Symphony No. 2-ifthe Braille manuscript comesthrough in time for George tomemorise the work.
