Memorial Scholarship Music in the Mountains is excited to announce the recipient of The 2016 Lucy Becker Memorial Scholarship is twenty-‐two year old mezzo-‐soprano Monica Serrano, a senior completing her Bachelor of Music at the Sacramento State School of Music. Now in its sixth year, MIM’s annual Lucy Becker Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of a wonderful soprano who contributed her vocal talents to our community through solo and choral performances over many years. This talent-‐based scholarship is designed to encourage dedicated vocal students to continue their studies. "Monica is an incredibly talented young singer,” explains Mark Vance, MIM’s Education Coordinator. “She sings with a wide range of emotion and has wonderful stage presence rarely seen in students her age.” Ms. Serrano is a transfer student from Yuba College, where she started to work on voice with Dr. Aya Ueda, and under her vocal instruction delved into the world of Opera. Her first role was a double role as the Third Lady and Third Spirit in the Yuba College production of Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ in the spring of 2013. A year later, in the spring of 2014, she was the lead role of Yuba College’s production of ‘Dido and Aeneas’. Now, under the instruction of Dr. Robin Fisher, Ms. Serrano was the character of Mrs. Trapes in the Sac State Opera Theatre’s production of Benjamin’s Britten’s ‘The Beggars Opera’ in the spring of 2015. She was also the winner of Sac State’s annual Robert S. Dinsmore Opera Scholarship that same spring. Ms. Serrano is currently preparing for the role of Fidalma in Sac State Opera Theatre’s production of Domenico Cimarosa’s ‘Il Matrimonio Segreto’. Ms. Serrano will receive a $1500 scholarship to continue her vocal studies, which she plans to use in the pursuit of the operatic stage. She will also be a featured soloist at MIM’s SummerFest concert Patriotic Pops, July 3rd at Western Gateway Park Pavilion, Penn Valley.
