Tell them that it’s in the soundtrack of Amor à vida and that it was Bruno and Paloma’s love theme (they will most probably know it). 2 - Tell Ss to listen to the song and try to recognize words. This first time they are supposed to listen to it without the lyrics – just to enjoy it! 3 – Ask Ss if they liked it and if they could recognize some words. 4 – Play the song again and ask them to write down words they recognize – ANY WORD (pronouns, adjectives, verbs, prepositions). 5 – Ask Ss if they know the name of the song and/or the name of the singer, then write on the board BRUNO MARS. Ask them if they know how to pronounce it correctly. 6 – Talk to them about the need to transcribe the way words are pronounced for the sake of correct pronunciation in learning and teaching another language. 7 – Ask Ss if they want to follow the song with the lyrics – give them the lyrics and play the song again. Tell them to circle the words they don’t know (for dictionary search later). 8 – Ask them to turn to the TRANSCRIPTION, and tell them that once they get used to those symbols, they will be able to recognize them and get the pronunciation of every word just by looking at a dictionary (they won’t need to listen to a person uttering it to check its pronunciation anymore). 9 – Play the song one last time and ask them to try to recognize any word from the phonetic transcription – so that they will have their first contact and start taking their first steps into the world of symbols and sounds of the English phonemes.
