Shut up & drive

In Rihanna's 'Shut Up And Drive' we see how Rihanna is portrayed as a sex symbol with the mise en scene. The music video is set in a garage , we then see cars and girls in short skirts/shorts. This instantly suggests that this music video is aimed at men and wants to attract men as stereotypically cars and women are two things that men love. The use of camera angles also show the way Rihanna is being sexually exploited in this music video. We see many low angles of Rihanna bending over in a short skirt, and we also see many close ups of her breasts and bum including her legs in the frame of the shots. The eye connection that Rihanna makes with the men in the music video suggests the sexual tension of the whole music video. Laura Mulvey describes the camera as the male gaze, her

saying this is saying women are viewed as sex object. In the Rihanna shut and drive video, she is portrayed as a sex object, for example the clothing Rihanna wears throughout the video are all revelling and short which makes males lust for her. The zoom ins on her bottom which makes men lust for her showing of her body selling herself to the audience. The concept of gaze is one that deals with how the audience view the people presented.

Daniel Powter - Bad Day

Bad day by Daniel Powter was released in 2009. The narrative of this story is two people of the opposite sex having a bad day. They seem not to know each other, they have similar schedules to their daily lives. The music video started with a split screen at a high angle showing us both a woman and a man laying in their beds symmetric to each other. This could be to indicate that their lives are similar to each other and are about to experience the same day. Similarly we notice that there is a split screen on their alarm clocks both suggesting how each of them have somewhere to be, and considering it's morning time, they're off to work. Also when the alarm clocks are at a split screen we notice that one is black and one is white which could represent the philosophy of procrastination and motivation, as you cannot have one without the other. This can provide a connotation that the male and the female in this video both require each other as partners. Additionally, when they both reach to turn their alarm clocks off, the split screen presents them as symmetrical, indicating they are equals, which challenges the Strauss binary opposites theory. As the woman gets up, she starts to apply some make-up in order to look nice and ready for the day ahead, conforming to the feminine stereotype. At 0:53, the man is waiting for the train looking directly forward as if he were to be daydreaming, when the woman looks in his direction in the next shot suggesting she's looking for her love as well as the train. Ironically, in the background of the train station shot, behind both of them on the bench there is a poster that says "smile" even though they're in a depressed mood.
