Transcript of music video
However I don’t like the fact that there are a couple on the stage singing a different song than the one that the music video is
actually for. This means that the song doesn’t properly start until
after 40 seconds and so I think that this would work better if the
introduction was shorter as people may lose interest, or if online they
may simply skip to the start of the song which means missing out a large portion of the music video.
Firstly at the start of the video I think that it sets the scene well as it shows that the location is at
a bar during a karaoke night. It also introduces
Jake as he is shown outside the bar carrying his
guitar, which his fans will recognise and
associate with him as he often plays it on stage
and in his music videos.
I like how Jake is wearing dark
colours as it makes him fit into the
set well and also makes his guitar
stand out. There are a lot of artist
close ups which alternate between
clips of people in the audience.
These close ups will appeal to fans
of the artist who will recognise him
and want to see him.
There is a lot of focus on the people at the bar and what they are doing as Jake sings. This makes the
lyrics and visuals match, as the lyrics are about being broken and many of the people are
alone, drinking, and unhappy looking. This is also shown by the fighting that takes place as he sings.
I like it how the video shows Jake from the audience’s view point, and then the audience from Jake’s
view point. This means that the audience are usually shown in high angle shots, whereas Jake is usually
shown in low angle shots which implies that he is not as broken as them.
The pace of the editing matches well with the beats in the music. However I
would change some of the camera work, although I do like the simplicity of
the video I think that adding more moving shots for example panning would
make the video more exciting and grab the audience’s attention more. One
piece of the camera work that I do like is the hand held shots which make
the video seem a lot more natural and really fits in with Jake’s image and the
song.
One part that I like is when a younger man checks that an older man is okay as he sits at the
bar which I think shows the audience that there is hope as there are nice people. This may
have been done to contradict the fighting as it shows that people can deal with being
broken in many ways which may be good or bad and so not all people are the same.
I also really like the point at around 4.08 where nearby is in focus but the distance is out of
focus as I think it shows disorientation and confusion really well. This is something that I may
like to use when I make my own music video if it fits in with the theme.
