How does the industry work?

Within the music industry, recording artists have been increasingly reliant upon record labels:

• to broaden their audience, • market their albums, • and be both promoted and heard on radio and television, • Promote positive media reports • to market their merchandise The internet has increasingly been a way that some artists

avoid costs and gain new audiences, as well as the use of videos in some cases, to sell their products.

What is a “Label”

• Record labels may be small, localized, and "independent" ("indie"), or they may be part of a large international media group, or somewhere in between. The largest 4 record labels are called major labels.

Major labels since 2008 (Big Four) • Warner Music Group • EMI (Electric & Musical Industries Ltd)• Sony Music Entertainment (Sony acquired 100% of BMG) • Universal Music Group

There are many independent labels; folk singer Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records is often cited as an ideal example. The singer turned down lucrative contracts from several top-name labels in order to establish her own New York-based company. Constant touring resulted in noteworthy success for an act without significant major funding. Ani and others from the company have spoken on several occasions about their business model in hopes of encouraging others.

What is Music Marketing??

• Music marketing is you living your music by doing whatever you do. For a folk artist, it may be driving around in a van with a cooler of bulk food and a dog in the back. For a DJ, it may be related to your fashion or the neighborhood where you live.

• Music marketing is coming up with a complete package that sells music, gets people to shows, and makes money. That's it!

Wikipedia says "marketing" is a business term referring to the promotion of products, advertising, pricing, distribution channels, and branding. The term developed from the original meaning which referred literally to going to market, as in shopping, or going to a market to sell goods or services.

This definition (and others like it) are a big reason why most musicians aren't interested in music marketing. It sounds boring, technical, and contrived.

Music Marketing is an Extension of You and Your Music

So….some musicians would define it as…

A London museum purchased the original Rolling Stones’ tongue-and-lips logo for $92,500. One of rock’s most famous logos, “The Tongue” was created by John Pasche in 1970 and featured on 1971’s Sticky Fingers. In what was perhaps one of the first cases of rock brand marketing, Jagger reportedly approached the Royal College of Art in 1969 looking to commission images for the band.

Music Marketing Lessons From Groove Armada an interesting study in contrasts, this past week we've come across two artists who are taking slightly different approaches to arrive at the same goal: to get you to listen to their latest album and share it with your friends. Here's a look at who they are, what they're doing and whether or not we think either will succeed…Groove Armada and Bacardi B-LiveThe Deal: Bacardi B-Live is a "music distribution platform" that asks users to set up a profile in order to get access to exclusive tracks, in this case Groove Armada's new EP. While signing up will entitle you to one free track, the only way to get more is by sharing with others. Will it work? The idea of rewarding music lovers for sharing their tunes is an interesting and appealing concept. As the RIAA knows, young people love to get music the easy way and incentivizing that impulse is a great start. For artists who don't mind being directly linked with liquor, this could be a great push. However, requiring users to set up an entire profile is asking a lot. It might serve Bacardi better to simply use a preexisting social network like MySpace. Also, while users are supposed to be of drinking age to participate, it's fairly easy to lie on these sites meaning that minors may find their way on anyway, and their parents might not be too happy.

Neko Case, Anti Records and Best Friends Animal SocietyThe deal: To spread the word about Neko Case's forthcoming album, her label Anti Records has pledged that for every blog that posts Neko's single, a donation will be made to Best Friends Animal Society. The promotion will run until February 3rd and for every blog post $5 will be donated. Also, for users of iLike who post the song on their profile, a $1 donation will be made. Will it work? Well, in this case that question could be interpreted in two ways. As far as the promotion itself being successful, I think it stands a good chance. Who doesn't want to help advance animal welfare and support a facility that houses abused, abandoned and special needs pets? Posting the single is a small favor to ask for a chance to listen to new music and feel good about yourself. But, I wonder how many of those who participate will actually go out and buy (or stay in and download) the full-length album when it comes out in March. That's a lot of time to pass between planting an idea and expecting a blogger (who probably has a short memory and a shorter attention span) to take action. It seems both ideas have potential, but they also have potential pitfalls. In any case, it'll be interesting to see how they fare, especially among younger listeners.

2 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS!Neko's Middle Cyclone has been nominated for Best Contemporary Folk Album and art directors Neko Case and Kathleen Judge have been nominated for Best Recording Package! The Grammy awards show will air on January 31, 2010.

The singer Miley Cyrus, beloved by tweens, announced that her tour through 45 cities this fall will go paperless to thwart scalpers, making hers the first major tour to take this step. Ticketmaster, the company handling sales, will offer only e-tickets and deploy other innovative antiscalping technologies at each venue. But isn’t scalping harmless, even beneficial — the very essence of American capitalism?

“Gangsta D” began writing rhymes at 11 yrs. old11-year-old convinced the Cash Money label to take him on,1 yr. Later Mannie Fresh partnered him with the 14-year-old B.G. and dubbed the duo the B.G.'z

The 1997 album, Chopper City, was supposed to be the follow-up, but when Wayne accidentally shot himself in the chest with a .44, it became a solo B.G. release.

That same year, he officially took the moniker Lil Wayne, dropping the "D" from his first name in order to separate himself from an absent fatherHe joined B.G., Juvenile, and Young Turk for another Fresh project, the teen hardcore rap group the Hot Boys who released their debut album Get It How U Live! in 1997. Two years later, Cash Money would sign a distribution deal with the major-label Universal. Mainstream distribution would help that year's Hot Boys album Guerrilla Warfare to reach the number one spot on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop AlbumsWayne would launch his solo career a year later with the album Tha Block Is Hot featuring the hit single title trackFinancial troubles and possible demise were on the horizon. The rest of the Hot Boys had defected and Wayne's planned 2003 album was scraped, coming out instead as an underground mixtape called Da Drought.

Wayne became enamored with the mixtape world after Da Drought drew so much attention from the hip-hop press. He used these underground releases to drum up anticipation for his next official album, the breakthrough effort Tha Carter.

Cash Money's future was no longer in doubt and traditional music business rules no longer seemed to apply as tracks would be leaked onto the Internet and various DJ's mixtapes. "Get Something" was another bold move as a Universal-funded video was made without the track ever seeing official release.

With his alternative marketing scheme working in overdrive, the 2005 landing of Tha Carter II was a major event, selling over a quarter-million copies the week of its release. "Fireman" and "Shooter" with Robin Thicke were released as singles while the album -- which for the first time featured no Mannie Fresh productions -- went platinum.

The world's largest fragrance company, Coty, launched Tim McGraw's signature fragrance, "McGraw by Tim McGraw" this McGraugust. He'll be joined at Coty by other smelly musicians like Celine Dion, Kylie Minogue and Shania Twain, who also have their own scents.

Once again, lacking a real product shot, we bring you an artists' conception of the forthcoming McGraw scent. We're hoping it smells like saddles and stale Miller Lite.

http://www.circleid.com/posts/82127_tim_mcgraw_launches_mobile_site/In an Oct. 14, 2008, statement to fans, the platinum-selling Tim McGraw shared that

he was both “saddened and disappointed that my (Curb Records) label chose to put out another hits album instead of new music.”According to McGraw’s Web site, the singer had been working on new a new studio album for more than a year and had debuted three new songs on his latest “Live Your Voice Tour” tour. It was his “desire to have the new record out this fall,” contended the online statement, “but Curb wanted to release a greatest-hits CD to extend McGraw’s recording contract term.”

“Record labels and retailers are hoping a crop of anticipated releases can help them hold ground in the recession, which has exacerbated the industry's ills. In the face of a nine-year slide in the sales of CDs, acts have been increasingly exploring nontraditional release strategies, some of which will be tested this fall. “

Pearl Jam didn't cooperate with a major label to produce a new studio album. Instead, the band signed a deal for Target to be the only major retail chain in the U.S. to carry the group's album "Backspacer.“ The album will also be sold through the band's Web site and iTunes.

Exclusive releases through Wal-Mart, Target and other big-box chains are not new for music acts (a major incentive: bands keep a much bigger chunk of the profits than they would if a label played middleman)

The hip-hop world will see debuts from newcomers Kid Cudi (Sept. 15) and Drake (Sept. 15) and the return of veteran Jay-Z, who completes a trilogy of albums with the release of "The Blueprint 3" on Sept. 11. Released on the same day in 2001

Shakira delivers "She Wolf" on Oct. 13. To generate publicity, Shakira's marketing team is trying to push lycanthropy as the next big thing after the vampire craze fed by the film and book franchise "Twilight." Shaky videos supposedly documenting attacks by female werewolves have gotten a tepid response online, but a music video featuring the singer doing contortionist poses in a cage has been a hit, fueling the success of the album's disco-flavored title track.

DEF LEPPARD Considers Cartoon Show Among New Marketing IdeasMUSIC NEWS- Hard rockers, Def Leppard and band members/songwriters Joe Elliott (lead singer), Rick “Sav” Savage (bass), Phil Collen (guitar), Vivian Campbell (guitar) and Rick Allen (drummer) have announced a "strategic agreement" with Primary Wave. The firm will market and handle the band's song catalog; tunes like; “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, “Photograph”, “Love Bites”, “Rock of Ages,” “Armageddon It,” “C’mon C’mon” and “Nine Lives”, a job previously performed by Sony/ATV. The copyrights will continue to be owned by the songs' various composers.

Among the ideas being floated is a cartoon TV show. The project is still in the early stages, and has not been pitched to the networks, but it will show the five members of the group in a fictional, adventurous setting. Primary Wave is said to also be developing "unusual" videogame and cell phone applications. The band toured North America this past

summer with Poison and Cheap Trick

Music Marketing:

There are countless ways of marketing that have made musicians popular, rich, famous and enjoying what they do. They perform in many ways, and produce many products. As you can see, it is much more than just making an album.

These unique marketing concepts have brought enjoyment to our lives through music. They all consist of a marketing mix. Providing the right product (CD), for the right price, to the best place (stores, Internet, file sharing) , and letting the public know about it in several ways through promotion.
