Music Magazine Double Page Spreads Analysis 2

This is a double page spread of the band Alice in Chains, from the magazine RockSound, I think the main pull quote “Death is going to happen to you, but how do make the most of what you have?” is well selected, as it ties in with the theme of this double page spread, which is the band speaking about the effects of the death of their lead singer, the layout and photographs also co-ordinate with this, as most of it is black or grey, and the band are pictured to be in a sombre mood but looking like they are reflecting, hence the usage of clouds, but the look of the double page spread also reinforces the bands image as a serious alternative rock/metal and grunge band. Also, the drop cap featured in the arti draws attention to the first word of the article, w actually summarises the point of the double page spread, the word is “Death”

This is a double page spread of the band

Alice in Chains, from the magazine

RockSound, I think the main pull quote

“Death is going to happen to you, but how do

make the most of what you have?” is well

selected, as it ties in with the theme of this

double page spread, which is the band

speaking about the effects of the death of their

lead singer, the layout and photographs also

co-ordinate with this, as most of it is black or

grey, and the band are pictured to be in a

sombre mood but looking like they are reflecting,

hence the usage of clouds, but the look of the

double page spread also reinforces the bands

image as a serious alternative rock/metal and

grunge band. Also, the drop cap featured in the article

draws attention to the first word of the article, which

actually summarises the point of the double page

spread, the word is “Death”

This double page spread is of the heavy alternative metal

band Slipknot, featured in Metal Hammer, one thing

positive about heavy metal bands is that they have a strong

image and like to use imagery and style as well as their

music to communicate their attitudes and image.

Slipknot as a band like to incorporate shock factor,

and so use gruesome masks and jumpsuits as a

mechanism to draw attention to their music, the content

of their music and their lyrics are said to be based on

values such as aggression, nihilism, darkness and

psychosis and this is conveyed by the layout, which

features dripping blood and maggots, and colours

consisting of black and blood red. Their attitude and

rebellious streak as a heavy metal band also influences

the magazine’s use of quotations, such as “it was really

fucking cool.”

This double page spread is about the band All Time Low,

featured in Kerrang magazine, I think judging by the layout or the

photograph, you cant really tell about the image or the musical

style of the band, however, the fact that one of the members is

holding a piece of cardboard with “United Kingdom” written on it

and that he is hitchhiking, suggests that they are a relatively new

band that are not used to touring in other countries, that and all

of the members look quite young suggests they are a new band.

Also, it is mentioned that they are an American pop-punk band,

this is conveyed in the pull quote “Get ready for penis jokes and

sweaty dancing” because All Time Low draw main influences from

the USA pop-punk scene, with bands like Blink 182, Bowling For

Soup and early Green Day, and this particular music scene has

a reputation for a young, fun, immature image which is brought

across in their lyrics and music videos.
