STEP 1This is the original image that I took, but I deleted the green background to enable me to put this image on top of a suitable background which relate to my genre of magazine.

To do this I had to the magic wand tool which allowed me to cut of large pieces of the green background without cutting into the image, this made it easier because the tool had an out line to the selected part of the image.

After I’d cut around the image I’d felt as if though the image didn’t fit in with my genre of my grime magazine, so I made the decision to remove the girl on the end, this also made the image fit better on the front cover and the image suited more to grime genre because they looked more together as a group.

STEP 2

To delete the person from the photograph I used the magic wand tool, which I used a lot when cutting around images.

When I finished the editing of the image it seemed as if the photograph resembled more of a realistic musical group, as the image could be put on the front cover of the magazine at a larger scale which meant that all of the group could be at the center of the magazine without being covered by the text from the side.

STEP 3

After editing the person out of the image I change a few parts of the image by using the magnetic lasso, I used this tool to cut around the head, to cut off hair which I felt wasn’t needed, this also made the image look cleaner and smooth and challenge those images on other magazines.

I also played with different filters on the clothing, by using the stained glass effect on different parts of the clothing, but a the end changed it back to the original image.

STEP 4When it came down to the contents page I had an idea of the image I wanted to use. After I found this image which had originally a grey top I decided to change the colour to blue because I wanted it to match my house style of blue, grey and white.

I done this by selecting the parts that I wanted using firstly the magic wand, but I discovered that it didn’t select a large amount of the top so I used the magnetic lasso. I changed the colour by firstly going on to the image and then selecting adjustments, after this I pressed variations which led me to this….

STEP 5

After applying the variation, I use the spot healing tool, to take away any imperfections from the face, this also left the image with a face which appeared smooth, which resembled more of a professional quality image.

STEP 6

After trialing the image on STEP 5 on InDesign the image didn’t seem to fit in with the grime genre theme of my magazine, so I used the filter to change the effect on the image. I tried different filters in the sketch folder as I felt that the black, grey and white effect made the image reflect the grime genre.

I decided on Contè Crayon because the effect that I had on the on the image gave it a metallic feel, this made more relatable to the grime genre.

STEP 7

Again, on selecting the eye for variation I used the magic wand which clearly selected the pupil for me to change the colour of the eye.

I made the choice to change the colour of the eye, to give the image some colour which makes its stand out more. The colour that I chose was blue because it was one of the main colours in my house style, this also meant the image could be relate to the other images in my magazine.

STEP 8To make my original background I started off with a plan black background, as this colour is the most recognizable when linked to grime music.

To get the effect in the middle of the background, I first had to select the middle area with the circle tool so the filter effect would only happen on that particular place. When on the filter clicked on the texture tool and then tried the stained glass effect. At first the effect wasn’t that noticeable but by repeatedly pressing on this filter it got larger and the effect resembled a cluster of stars which could be used to symbolize the artists becoming rising stars.

STEP 9

After looking at the background I realized that the by putting the front cover photograph on top of it, the effect on the background wouldn’t be seen clearly, so the solution was to move the move it from the middle my selecting the area using the magnetic lasso tool.

By putting the effect in a different area it still can be a main part of the of the front cover , but with out over shadowing the group on the front cover.

STEP 10

I decided to put the center effect at the top which will behind the masthead, this will put more attention on the central image and masthead but stop the background being plain and putting a twist on a usual black background.

I move the select area by using the mouse/arrow tool

Page 12: Music mag con photoshop

STEP 11

After I’d moved the effect there was a large hole in the middle which I had to cover up by taking a colour of black and drawing in the inside so it will blend together as a background, I used the paint brush tool to colour in the empty spaces and used a medium sized brush so it would cover evenly.

STEP 12

Also for my magazine I wanted to have a logo which represented grime music, to get an original image I had to take a photograph of a microphone that I’d drawn freehanded. To start off with I had to cut the outside off the microphone which left the outline of the microscope.

In the photograph that I took I had originally written S UP on the microphone as an abbreviation for STEP UP the name of my magazine, but when I had put the image on Photoshop the text didn't fit in well so I removed it by selecting using the magic wand and deleted.

Page 14: Music mag con photoshop

STEP 13

I used a filter on the middle of microphone to tie it in with the main theme of the magazine, by using the stained glass effect repeatedly in the texture folder, it created the same effect on the front cover of my magazine. Another reason for why I used this was because the effect that I had on the microphone resembled either sequins or glitter, this was good because I wanted it to have feminine feel as I had a girl group on the front cover of my magazine.

I used the magnetic lasso tool to select the middle area of the microphone.

Page 15: Music mag con photoshop

STEP 14

After filtering the middle of the microphone I changed a few things elsewhere, I made some parts white such as the cord white because it needed to be shown clearly against the black background. I also some of the parts white to show the difference between the top of the microphone to the bottom with the paint bucket tool this allowed be to change the colour of a large amount of space .

STEP 15For my double page spread, I had the idea of using the images to fade slightly, because this effect could be used both as a background and images of the artists.

The filter effect that I chose from the sketch folder for the images was torn edges, but the pictures were varied due to the difference in image balance, smoothness and contrast. I done this to all the separate images and made a contrast in darkness for bold to faded.

Page 17: Music mag con photoshop

STEP 16

To put the image on a blank file I had to import it and then place it in area, I done this with all the images on the same file.

Page 18: Music mag con photoshop

STEP 17

I put all the images together so they could be seen as one, and as if the image was taken together, so I could use it as a central image on my double page article.

Page 19: Music mag con photoshop

STEP 18

For my contents page background I wanted to use a similar effect that I used on other stages of my magazine, the filter effect stained glass, this was my thought at first using in on a grey background, but when putting the grey photography on top of the grey background I had to find a way to change the colour of the background and keeping the same theme.

Page 20: Music mag con photoshop

STEP 19

When changing the image colour I used adjustments and then pressed variations, when on it I wanted to use a pale blue, I done this by trying out more or less saturation. I done this to relate to the theme of my magazine which was starting from full bright colour to then gradually fading on the contents page, when featuring almost no colour or monotone on the double page article.

DIFFICULITIES WITH IMAGES IN PHOTOSHOP

One of the main difficulties that I faced while creating magazine was with an image in Photoshop. The difficult part was trying to fix the problems that I had with the hair style, to improve this problem I used the smudge tool as well as the magnetic lasso which allowed me cut off excess hair with wasn’t needed.

I also had difficulties when cutting around the trainer in this insert, it was hard overcoming this issue because the colour of the black trainer matched the dark shadow which was on the floor, fix this problem I had to cut out the trainer from the original image and move it on top of the editing image. To finish the effect off I had to use the magnetic lasso and smudge tool to smooth out the rough edges.
