What are Music DVD Digipaks? A Music DVD Digipak, is patented style of packaging that is used usually to house either a CD

or DVD. It is a registered trademark of AGI media, which licences the name and designs to

manufacturers across the globe. The Digipak itself is commonly that of a gatefold design, which is made out of paperboard or

similar materials. A CD Digipak is used to house special editions of an album or sometimes or just a regular CD. A DVD Digipak is used to form part of a special edition or as a premium package set, which

often includes a booklet, coupled with a special features DVD. Compared to the Jewel case that was widely used before Digipaks came about, they are much

less durable, but do not need the brittle teeth to hold the CD in place. A mere ‘soft spot’ is used to hold the disc in place.

Although less vulnerable to cracking than a jewel case, the disc tray inside the package (particularly the "teeth" of the hub which secure the disc in place) remains rather brittle and is prone to cracking if the package is crushed. Digipak-style cases grew in popularity among record labels and recording artists in the early 2000s.

To protect the outside packaging, a UV resistant film is applied to the surface of the Digipak, which will increase its longevity

This a Digipak from the artist Corinne Bailey-Rae. Following the death of her husband, Jason Rae, this album was intended to reflect her state of mind. The classic Gatefold design conforms to the criteria of a digipak. It is enticing, and visually attractive. The colourful, yet simple design reflects the genre of the music this artist conveys. The ambience of the music is reflected in the artistry.

This Digipak is taken from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (RHCP). The front cover adopts a retro, 80’s style of artistry. This deeply reflects the genre of the band, which is rock, with a retro, old skool feeling to it. Prima Facie, not much can be said on firsyt impressions. However, the colour palette does make up for this, in the way that it is visiually enhancing and eye-catching. Again, this digipak adopts the gatefold design.

Moby 18- The Best of Moby From the DVD digipack, The audience may expect a range

of things from this artist. The reputation that precedes Moby may also be a contributing factor. From the cover, the audience may expect an ambient genre of music, which the pastel colours help create. Therefore, it is true when we say that the cover does lend itself to the genre of music.

Moby is known for his ambient genre of music which is often electronica. A track, Stars, that was taken from his album was used to help create the album cover. Again, it is true to say that the album cover is representative of his genre of music.

There are additional materials that have been included in the overall product. This includes a booklet which gives the fans of Moby to access his other material. This also includes special offers and introductory offers. This booklet takes the form of a small, A6 glossy four page piece, which is vivid and eye-catching. This booklet will be used to exploit Moby and his work to achieve maximum profit for both the label and Moby himself.

The booklet accompanies the disc in the case and is held in place by two small clips, which is attached to the digipack.

Radiohead- The Live Recordings

This Digipak is true to form. It adheres totally to the description in the first slide of this PowerPoint presentation.

The design is that of a gatefold design, and the disc rests in a sleeve made of paperboard.

From the cover, there is not much the audience can really expect from this artist. It is rather ambiguous. The audience may expect a range of music genres from this artist, as there is many interlocking pictures that make up the cover. It is hard to get any real insight of the material which the band produce.

There is no additional packaging. Again, the overall design does not really lend itself to the

genre of the music, as there is no real indication of what the genre of music is the in first place.

There is many improvements that can be made to this piece to make it more eye-catching and in general, have any relevance at al to the genre of the music, as prima facie, there is not any relevance whatsoever.
