A MUSIC WORKSHOP AT KILKARI HOME, NORTH DELHI WITH CARRIE NEWCOMER, 25TH SEPTEMBER 2009

GOALS• Create a music program that integrates human rights and child rights ideas through a music

workshop and exposure program to teach children- at risk Create a link between organizations/NGOs already working for child development and

rehabilitation, and the urban youth working in a professional and amateur capacity with music.

• Create a joint programme of action supported by the music community to raise awareness about human rights and child rights, the use of music to address these issues

• Create a partnerships approach by networking with organizations, and have a wide outreach to organizations in Delhi.

• Create a sustainable program and develop the capacity of organizations to implement the program of rights based teaching through music and songs independently

OBJECTIVES

• To work for positive change integrated in child-care, welfare and rehabilitation programs already being implemented by organizations and NGOs

• To enable organizations and NGOs to effectively sustain and implement the music programme on their own

• To promote children’s empowerment through music and exposure to basic music education

• To integrate social learning into workshops and the process of music education, the content of which is their own life reality and today’s socio- economic and political structures of society

• Integrate social learning and ideas into the music programme focusing on child rights and gender equality

• To engage and empower the young music community in Delhi towards social activism and change the lives of children at risk

• To develop a partnerships approach and network with street children, volunteers, music communities, NGOs, organizations, commercial and educational units

Our philosophy

• A strong belief in the power of music as a tool to understand and access the world.

• It is an integral part of our national and international culture, past and present, and builds an important link between us and the wider world.

• Music and history are inter-connected and provide another area of learning for the children.

• Appreciating the relevance of music to children’s lives can motivate children to enjoy learning and to develop the skills and attitudes needed to succeed across their curriculums in school as well.

• Music allows them a unique space to be creative, express themselves, and learn.

• JOINING the urban educated student and artist community with children-at risk creates a unique space of learning for them too.

WHAT WE ARE DOING

• Involving more young people and musicians as volunteers

• Developing a child centric development model

• Developing systematic documentation methods for the impact of music on children

• Integrating human rights and life- skills teaching into the music program

• Training and conducting workshops with children, volunteers and musicians

• Creating public spaces and performances to showcase our work

• Networking with more organizations and institutions

WHAT WE HAVE DONE SO FAR

• 2008- March 2009:– Identification of 50 young

musicians, their motivation and planning workshops with them.

– Music workshops (25) programme at Uma Pandey Home (Sarai basti), run by NGO Aman Biradari in Shastri Nagar, New Delhi.

– Documentation through the creation of a short film, ‘Music Basti’ (15 minutes) for awareness and information purposes, to screen in colleges/schools/festivals/ and other.

– A film screening of ‘Music Basti’ and concert by the same name at India Habitat Center, on September 27, 2008. The film-launch also featured a concert by Delhi based eclectic fusion band Advaita, and a photography and art exhibition, featuring art work by the children as well.

• In March 2009, Music Basti collaborated with The YP Foundation at the ‘Blending Spectrum Festival’, India Habitat Center, in March 2009 supported by The Global Fund for Children, showcasing the work done by young people to support street children in the city. The festival featured a performance organized by Music Basti, where children from Uma Pandey Home, performed a song composed for the event.

WHAT OUR PROGRAM DOES

• Builds self-expression and self confidence through music.

• It offers a means of expression that speech often does not.

• Music forms part of an individual’s identity and can help foster a sense of achievement and self-worth, and the ability to work confidently and cooperatively with others.

• Shared performance builds teamwork, collaboration and participation skills.

• Children learn to cooperate with others to reach a common goal through playing, rehearsing and performing music.

• They develop an awareness of different musical parts and the roles and contributions of different members of a group.

• The interaction through music builds and allows the children to trust the volunteers and musicians they are working with, and to trust each other.
