„Endlich, die Indoor Saison hat wieder begonnen“. Ich muss zu jedem Herbstanfang an diese Karte denken, die uns so um Oktober 2002 von einem Leser zugeschickt wurde. Auch wenn diese Karte wohl eher ein Gag war, können echte mushroom Freaks dem Herbst schon gute Seiten abgewinnen, oder ? Aber nicht nur im Wald sprießen die Pilze dieser Tage aus dem Boden, auch hier in der mushroom Redaktion ist das Mycel in Bewegung. Unser neuer Pilz-Redakteur Roberdo hat in diesem Monat einen wahren Schreib-Marathon veranstaltet. Unser neuer Praktikant Johannes erwies sich gleich zu Beginn als unermüdlicher Layout-Pilz. Die Ute unterstützt uns derweil seit kurzem in der Abonnentenbetreuung und Ina kümmert sich ab Oktober um die Büroorganisation .

Möchtest Du auch ein helfender Pilz sein? Wir sind in Zeiten der nötigen konzeptionellen mushroom-Umgestaltung auf der Suche nach engagierten Leuten die Lust haben, uns bei unserer Arbeit für die Tranceszene zu unterstützen. Wo ich gerade beim Thema Herbst bin. Da fällt mir doch noch was in eigener Sache ein. Wenn Du am Donnerstag den 16.Oktober noch nichts vor hast, dann schau doch mal im Atisha (Barmbeker Straße 62, Hamburg) bei der „Mat Mushroom Birthday Party“ vorbei, wo Mikadho, [email protected] und Jan Cook mir ab 22 Uhr ihre Trance-Ständchen geben, bevor ich dann selbst an die Regler gehe. Der Eintritt ist übrigens frei und die Stimmung im Atisha immer ganz besonders flauschig.

Sooo, ein ganz besonderes „Tschüss und mach‘s gut“ geht jetzt am Ende des Vorwortes noch an unsere Bürofee Steffi, die nach sechs Jahren treuer mushroom Seele zu neuen Aufgaben in die weite Welt aufbricht. Vielen Dank Steffi für Deinen unermüdlichen Einsatz und alles Gute für die Zukunft.

“Finally the indoor season has begun!” I always remember this postcard, which a reader sent us in 2002, when the fall has arrived. Although this card was rather a kind of joke, the real mushroom freaks will appreciate this season, not? The mushrooms do not only sprout in the surrounding forests but also here in the editorial office the mycel is growing. Our new mushroom editor Roberdo delivered a real writing- marathon this month. And our trainee Johannes proves himself to be a indefatigable layout mushroom. In the meantime, Ute helps us with the subscriber support and Ina is responsible for the office organization starting October.

You also wanna be a mushroom assistant? Due to our necessary editorial re-design we are looking for engaged people who would like to support us with our work for the Trance scene. Und wieder ist ein Sommer vorü-ber, wieder ging es viel zu schnell für die meisten von uns. Aber nichts desto trotz hattet Ihr ganz offensichtlich eine fast schon unanständige Menge Spaß auf den vielen verschiedenen Festi-valäckern, wie die Ergebnisse der großen mushroom Sommer Umfrage belegen.

Vielen Dank zunächst an alle, die sich beteiligt haben! Es war wirk-lich spannend, die vielen Beiträge auszuwerten und es zeigen sich einige interessante Trends und Ent-wicklungen.

Das für uns Tanzjunkies Wichtigste zuerst: Die Musik. Welche DJs und Liveacts haben Euch nicht nur die Schuhe, sondern auch noch die Socken ausgezogen? Auf unseren

Festivals wird mittlerweile ja eine ziemlich große Bandbreite geboten. Von sehr, sehr harten und schnellen Dark Psy Sounds bis hin zu eher chil-ligem Minimal Techno ist fast alles dabei. Und trotzdem ist es offenbar schwierig, es allen recht zu machen: Was dem einen zu hektisch ist, ist der anderen zu lahm und umgekehrt. Interessanterweise vermissen aber eine ganze Reihe Leute offenbar die goldene Mitte: In Euren Kommen-taren an die Partyveranstalter wurde immer wieder der Wunsch geäußert, doch bitte wieder mehr „echten“ Progressive Trance zu spielen.So wundert es denn auch nicht, dass das Feld der beliebtesten Acts der

letzten Sommersai-son von einer pro-gressiven Koryphäe angeführt wird: Neelix löste immer wieder neue Begei-sterungsstürme bei Euch aus. Und auch die Klopfgei-ster mit ihrem teil-weise geradezu oldschooligen Pro-gressive Sound erfreuten sich sehr großer Beliebt-heit. Lustig war für mich zu sehen, dass Eure übrigen Lieblingskünst-ler dieses Sommers allesamt wahre Urgesteine des Psy Trance sind: Sun Project, Star Sounds Orchestra und Juno Reactor rocken unsere Szene schon seit über zehn Jahren! „Never change a running system!“, fällt mir dazu nur ein...Doch ein gelungenes Open Air ist nicht nur von seinem Lineup abhän-gig. Auch die Location, die Aufma-chung, das Wetter und nicht zuletzt

is a pretty huge bandwidth of music at our festivals: From very, very hard and fast Dark Psy sounds to rather chilly Minimal Techno quite everything is played. But neverthe-less it seems to be pretty tricky to please everybody: What is too hard and too hectic for the one, the other claims to be boring. Interestingly quite a huge amount of people is missing the golden mean: In your comments to the party promo-ters lots of people asked them to play more “real” Progressive Trance again. And so it is not a surprise that the most popular act this year is a real Progressive luminary: Neelix triggered thunders of euphoria on the dan-

It was really funny for me to see that the other most popu-lar artists in this survey are all real primitive rocks of Psy Trance: Juno Reactor, Star Sounds Orchestra and Sun Project have been rocking the scene since more than ten years now! Während vor allem die deutschen Festi-valveranstalter mit einem stetigen Rück-lauf der Besucherzahlen zu kämpfen haben konnten jene, die es zur dies-jährigen Boom nach Portugal geschafft haben, einen wahren Quantensprung in der Geschichte der Festivalkul-tur erleben. Wichtige Gründe für den Erfolg waren neben dem erweiterten musikalischen Spektrum vor allem die vielen Möglich-keiten, auch ohne Drogen den persön-lichen Horizont zu erweitern sowie die umfangreiche Einbringung von Kunst und politischen Themen.Offiziellen Angaben zufolge versammel-ten sich mehr als 30.000 Menschen an den Ufern des in wunderschöner Land-schaft gelegenen Stausees bei Idanha-a-Nova. Aufgrund dieser enormen Men-schenmassen, die alle zur gleichen Zeit auf das Festivalgelände strebten, kam es zu heftigen Problemen am Eingang: Viele mussten in einem 14 km langen Stau bis zu 72 Stunden auf Einlass war-ten. Und leider wurden bis zu 15.000 Fraggels aus aller Welt abgewiesen, da sie kein Vorverkaufsticket besaßen und die Kapazitäten erschöpft waren.

Das Dekorationskonzept der Boom 2008 war es, wieder zurück zu den Wurzeln zu kehren. Dies äußerte sich in der sehr natürlichen Aufmachung des Festivals mit dezenten Farben, vielen Pflanzen und zahlreichen Lehmbauten. Investiert wurde in die beeidruckende Sacred Fire Stage, das Theater mit umfangreichem Programm, Filmvorführungen und Per-formances sowie in den mit der Phö-nix Schnecke dekorierten Groovy Beach Floor, welcher ein buntes Programm aus Dubstep, Electro und Techno prä-sentierte.Jedoch gab es auch eine ganze Reihe Kritik in diesem Jahr. Ein merkwür-diges Phänomen waren die stets langen Schlangen vor den Duschen. Viele Frag-gels warteten lange auf eine Einzelka-bine und hatten Probleme damit, sich in den öffentlichen Einrichtungen zu duschen. Wie können Psy- Fraggels so prüde sein, wo sie doch auf dem Dance-floor erleuchtende Erfahrungen der uni-versellen Verschmelzung machen?Eine merkwürdige Epidemie wurde als der „Boom Bug“ bekannt: Viele Besu-cher litten unter Durchfall, Erbrechen, Kopfschmerzen und Schwäche was für sie 2 bis 4 Tage eine äußerst unan-

genehme Situation bedeutete. Es war weder das Trinkwasser, noch das Essen oder der See- es war schlichtweg ein Virus oder Bakterium, welches schnell die runde machte.Viele Gerüchte gab es über die Anzahl der Toten auf der Boom: Von 5 – 10 war die Rede. Die Wahrheit jedoch ist: Es starb ein Franzose infolge seiner Herzer-krankung. Der Veranstalter Diogo han-delte sehr einfühlsam und angemessen und stoppte die Musik für 10 Minuten. In dieser Zeit hielt er eine sehr mutige Rede vor tausenden Menschen auf dem Trancefloor.Die Veranstalter hatten kein Problem mit dem non- kommerziellen Rave auf der anderen Seite des Sees: Die „Anti- Boom“ zählte immerhin ca. 5000 Besu-cher. Jedoch wurde jene „anti- anti- anti- Bewegung“ als Teil unserer glo-balen Subkultur respektiert, ohne sie jedoch als integralen Bestandteil der Boom zu verstehen.Die Boom 2008 setzte neue Standards für alle Festivals weltweit und eröffnete eine viel weitere Perspektive als wir sie von gewöhnlichen Psytrance Festivals kennen!

What is the reason for the “psyccess” of the Boom Festival? Whilst other long-established psy-trance festivals in Europe have a painful decline in visi-tors, those people who managed to be present at Boom 2008 have expe-rienced a lunar step to a new era of an integral global and visionary gathe-ring concept. One of the reasons of the success is surely the opening up to a broa-der spectrum of music, activities and opportunities to experience enlight-ment visions away from using drugs – as well as implementing arts and poli-tical visions.It was officially more than 30.000 peo-ple that gathered at one of the most beautiful locations around the lake in Idanha-a-Nova. This enormous number of people who all wanted to get in on the same day after travelling thou-sands of kilometers led to serious pro-blems at the gates. Many people had to wait up to 72 hours. About 10.000 peo-ple more than expected wanted to get in as soon as possible. Unfortunately up to 15.000 people didn’t get a ticket anymore at the gates no matter how far they travelled to Boom. The concept of Boom 2008 was to go back to the roots, to more earthly deco-rations such as the clay middle pil-lar made by Slovak folks. This year’s money went to broaden the Boom set-

ting in the direction of more stages like the gorgious Sacred Fire stage, the The-atroom with many shows, movies and other great performances as well as to the Phoenix-snail-decorated groovy stage with electro, downbeat, minimal and techno sounds.But also a lot of critics came up this year. Very strange was to see the long queues in front of the showers. Many Boom-fraggles wanted a single sho-wer cabin for showering and many had problems to take their shower in the public shower areas. How can psy-frag-gles be so shy after having experienced undescribable enlightment experiences on the dancefloor and feeling the unity of themselves with the universe in a time- and matterless way?

There was a strange kind of Boom disease or also called the “Boom bug”: Many people were affected by diarrhea, fever, headache and weak-ness which led to a horrible time for two to four days. It was neither the drinking water nor the food or the lake, it was simply a virus or bacteria going around transmitted by the air. Well, if it was a virus, even antibiotics wouldn’t have helped.I heard so many rumours about how many people died on Boom – from 5 to 10 persons. It’s all rumours. In rea-lity one french man died as an accident due to his heart disease – a sad acci-dent for the first time on a Boom Festi-val. Organizer Diogo acted in a very empathic and appropriate way and clo-sed down the music for 10 minutes and gave a truly brave speech in front of thousands of people on the mainfloor.Boom 2008 set standards for all festi-vals worldwide that offered a much wider perspective than we are used from usual psytrance parties all over the world!TomRomwww.boomfestival.org

There will be three winner tracks in each of these categories which will be professionally mastered and digitally published worldwide. The winners will earn 75% of the net profits from their release. All nine winners will ad-ditionally be featured with interviews in mushroom magazine during the next year to give them even more support. So this year´s contest is meant to be a springboard for your producer and live act career. We will present your sound to the worldwide Psy Trance scene and thereby pave your road to bookings and important contacts to labels.

Send us your track until January 15th. Every person can only contribute one track or be involved in one track. From the end of January to the end of February there will be an online voting about the tracks on mushroom-online.com. The tracks will be published there in rather low quality so they won‘t be stolen. In March the winners will be contacted and interviewed. The winner tracks will be mastered and prepared for digital distribution via Beatport, iTunes, Cytopia, Tranceload and many other online stores by Agent Audio.In April the winners will finally be an-nounced and the Progressive Trance producer interviews will be published.

Wohl kaum ein Progressive Act hat in den letzten Jahren für mehr Furore gesorgt als Nee-lix. Wo auch immer der Hambur-ger er auf der Bühne erscheint, ist euphorische Stimmung und ein kochender Dancefloor vorpro-grammiert. Nun steht sein neues Album „You’re Under Control“ in den Startlöchern und wieder hat sich einiges getan.

Henrik Twardziks derzeitiger Erfolg kommt nicht von ungefähr: Ab morgens um 9 Uhr sitzt er im Stu-dio und feilt an seinen Produkti-onen. Dabei hat sich seine Vorge-hensweise im Laufe der Jahre ver-ändert: „Früher habe ich erst einmal den Beat erstellt, der Rest hat sich dann meistens von selbst ergeben.

Ich wusste also nie wirklich, welche Aussage der Track am Ende haben würde und oft hörten sich die Tracks auch etwas zusammenge-würfelt an. Bei dem neuen Album bin ich anders vorge-gangen. Am Anfang dieser Tracks habe ich nach einem Aufhänger oder einer Aus-sage gesucht. Sobald ich diese gefunden hatte, also

vielleicht eine schöne Harmonie oder ein gutes Frage-Antwort-Spiel der Sounds, fing ich mit der eigent-lichen Produktion zu dem Track an. Leider ist es oft sehr schwer so eine Aussage zu finden, weswegen es für das Album unglaublich viele Anläufe brauchte.“Und so wird es die eine oder andere Überraschung geben. Auf MySpace entdeckte Hendrik eine austra-lische Sängerin, von deren Stimme er sofort begeistert war. Sein Vor-haben, einen Remix zu erstellen, gestaltete sich jedoch zunächst schwierig: „Geht nicht, shit!, dachte ich. Erst sechs Monate später habe ich mich erneut an das Pro-jekt gewagt, und es hat geklappt: Ein progressiver Track mit ganzen Gesangsspuren! Das Album hebt sich schon deutlich von allem ande-ren ab, diese Art Sound ist ganz klar neu, Neelix.“Inspiriert wird der Künstler im Moment von Produzenten wie Eric Prydes, dessen durchdachte Arran-gements ihn faszinieren. Aber auch Symphonix, Ticon oder der Newco-mer Phaxe begeistern ihn.Den aktuellen Trend auf den Pro-gressive Floors, auf denen die DJs oftmals reinen Techno auflegen, sieht der Hamburger gelassen. Für ihn ist dies ganz einfach eine Wei-terentwicklung der Szene, langjäh-rige Trance Künstler haben nun ein-fach Lust auf neue Sounds. Wäh-rend der Techno auf Trance Parties nach wie vor ein kontrovers dis-kutiertes Thema ist, werden Nee-lix Sets stets mit größter Begeiste-

rung aufgenommen. So auch auf der diesjährigen Boom: „Das erste was mir zu Ohren kam, war, dass DJ Zosma von einem der Gäste ange-griffen wurde, weil ihm der Proggi Sound nicht gefiel! Da hatte ich erst recht Angst und Bange. Zum Glück war dies unberechtigt: Mein Set kam sehr gut an, die Reaktion war unglaublich...“Man darf also gespannt sein, wenn es Anfang November heißt: You’re under Control!

No other Progressive act has cre-ated such massive furore as Nee-lix during the last years: Where-ver he enters a stage euphoric atmosphere and a cooking dance-floor is guaranteed. Now his new album “You´re Under Control” is ready to be launched and again there are new developments.

Henrik Twardzik´s recent success is no coincidence: From 9 o´clock in the morning he is in his stu-dio and working on his produc-tions. During the years his strategy has changed: “In the past I used to create a beat first and the rest just developed from it somehow. So I never really knew which mes-sage the track would finally have and often the tracks sounded a little bit mixed together somehow. For the new album I approached diffe-rently: I first looked for some central idea, a message. As soon as I found something, like a nice harmony or a cool stimulus-response play with the sounds, I started producing the

track. Unfortunately, it is really hard to find those central ideas, so it took a lot of attempts for this album.”So, there will be surprises. For exa-mple, Hendrik discovered an Aus-tralian singer on MySpace and was instantly impressed by her voice. But his idea to create a remix turned out to be tricky: “Fuck, it does not work!, I thought. Six months later I dared to start this project again and it worked out: A Progressive track with full vocal lines! The album stands out against anything I have done before, this kind of sound is definitely new, Neelix!”The artist is inspired by produ-cers like Eric Prydes at the moment, whose sophisticated arrangements he admires. But also Symphonix, Ticon and the newcomer Phaxe impress him.Hendrik is easy with the recent trend that Progres-sive floor DJs play pure Techno sets. For him this is a pretty normal evolu-tion within the scene, long standing Psy Trance pro-ducers simply want to deal with new sounds. But while Techno at Trance parties is still a very con-troversial issue, Neelix sets always trigger pure euphoria. Just like at this year´s Boom festival: “The first thing I heard was that DJ Zosma was attacked by a visi-tor because he did

not like his Progressive Sound! So I was very nervous before my gig. But in the end my set worked out perfectly, the reaction was inde-scribable…”So be prepared for November when “You´re Under Control”!

Wir möchten versuchen, mit diesem Konzept die verschie-denen Seiten unseres Lebens auszudrücken, von dem Punkt an, wenn man auf Reisen geht und was man während des Trips durchlebt bis man wieder zurück- und runterkommt.“Musikalisch bleiben Sirko und Stephan dabei dem Progressive Trance treu. Dabei kommt ihnen

Technisch kommen dabei neben Cubase und Ableton Live eine Vielzahl verschiedener Plugins zum Ein-satz. Hardware wird hingegen im Moment eher selten benutzt doch das soll sich ändern, wenn dem-nächst das neue Studio bezo-gen wird.Man muss nicht jeden Tag um die halbe Welt reisen, um einen Ein-druck vom „Wild Life“ zu bekom-men. Dies kann man durchaus auch beim wochenendlichen Streifzug durch die Clubs der Gemeinde erleben. Für den ent-sprechenden Soundtrack zumin-dest ist demnächst gesorgt!

Everyday life gets you into big and small adventures. This is even more true for the week-end. And when you are DJ, pro-ducer, label owner and party promoter, all at the same time, it‘s getting really, really wild...

The brothers Sirko and Ste-phan from North Germany did not leave out anything: For one decade now they have been rocking the dance floors around the globe as the DJ team Mon-tagu & Golkonda. They are the promoters of the Tshitraka festi-val which is an annual highlight, especially for Progressive lovers. Their label Blue Tunes is fre-quently in the news for its cutting edge releases. And finally, there are the two internationally very renowned projects Symphonix and True Lies.So the name of the new Sympho-nix album was not chosen by ran-dom: “The Wild Life”. The two dudes from Schwerin tell some musical anecdotes from their adventurous life: “We experience our life as artists like this: Being on the road all the time, lots of parties in many different coun-tries, getting to know new peo-

ple all the time and having lots of fun with those, exchange expe-riences and experience a lot of weird stuff. We try to express dif-ferent aspects of our life from that moment when you start for a journey, what you experience during the trip and finally when you are getting down and back home again.”From a musical point of view they stay faithful to Progres-sive Trance. For this their five-year musical education gives them a real advantage, although it is quite some time back. They taught themselves how to use sequencers, samplers and syn-thesizers. When producing, Sirko and Stephan always work together. They tune every single sound until they are both com-pletely satisfied with it. Cubase and Ableton Live are employed as well as also heaps of plugins. At the moment the guys do not really work with hardware but they definitely want to change this when they move into the new studio very soon.You don’t have to go half around the globe every day to get an impression of “The Wild Life”. Doch schon damals beschäftigte sich Fernando Aguinaco aus Mexico City mit den faszinierenden Möglichkeiten dieses Mediums zur Visualisie-rung von Musik: Er zählt zu den Pionieren des moder-nen VJing!!! Auf dem Ambientfloor wird zudem der Liveact Nordlight performen, der erst-mals in Deutschland zu hören ist.Für die Dekoration wurde abermals der Schwede Frederik NOS verpflichtet, der schon im letzten Jahr durch seine Bilder zu verzaubern wusste und die-ses Mal mit einer komplett neuen Bil-derserie aufwarten wird. Unterstützt wird er von einigen lokalen Grössen wie z.B. Asrai-Pramandala.Natürlich darf eine XL-Lasershow bei diesem Event nicht fehlen.

„Unterschreiben sie hier!“ Fünf Studentinnen und fünf Studenten der McGill-Universität fackelten nicht lange und gaben im kanadischen Montreal ihr Einverständ-nis. Anschließend wurden sie schön der Reihe nach in die Röhre eines Positronen- Emissions- Tomographen, kurz PET genannt, geschoben. Diese Maschine ist in der Lage, dem menschlichen Gehirn bei seiner Arbeit zuzuschauen. Alle zehn ProbandInnen hatten zuvor Musikstücke aus-gewählt, die ihnen einen Schauer den Rücken hinunter-jagen und dabei Gänsehaut erzeugen. Davon wurden ihnen nun die geilsten 90 Sekunden vorgespielt während Herzfrequenz, Atemtiefe und Hauttemperatur gemessen wurden und gleichzeitig der PET Veränderungen in der Durchblutung verschiedener Hirnareale farbcodiert auf einen Bildschirm zauberte.
