Brian Reynolds leads our monthly Life Drawing sessions suitable for any ability level except absolute beginners. You’re welcome to bring your own materials, but we can supply the basics.

Using mixed media and printing techniques we’ll create unique handmade, Christmas cards, wrapping paper and decorations.

If you enjoy drawing, come and have a go at this simple intaglio printmaking technique with artist Jo Price. Please bring an A5 size image to work from (a drawing or photograph) and a packed lunch! All materials provided.

Art Historian Jennie Spiers will be leading our bi-monthly Art History Study Days, which include looking at artworks in the Gallery as well as refreshments. Study days are open to those who are new to the art world and anyone already familiar to it.

Artist Talk: Phoebe Unwin Sat 17 Oct / Art Gallery Lecture Theatre / 2-3pm / £1 per person / Pre-book
Join us for an afternoon talk with Phoebe Unwin, whose work ‘Concrete Ball’, 2012, will be on display in the Gallery’s Main Hall until 28 November. ‘Concrete Ball’ was acquired by the Contemporary Art Society for Southampton City Art Gallery in 2013. This talk is part of a year-long programme of artist talks that take place at the Contemporary Art Society’s Member Museums across the UK. Supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, these talks are organised to coincide with the contemporary artist’s work entering a museum’s collection and are designed to introduce artists to new audiences.

Reopened after major conservation, this is a rare chance to ascend the city’s clock tower and to catch fantastic views of Southampton. Join one of our tour guides to discover the remarkable history of this iconic building. Book now to avoid disappointment. Participants must be over 12 years old, must be physically fit, and should wear sensible shoes as there are over 200 steps to climb!

Join us for a tour of the House & Garden, including the attic and cellars, to discover more about the wonderful history of the museum that spans over 800 years. Enjoy a hot drink, scrumptious scone with lashings of jam and cream while taking in the beautiful views of our tranquil garden. Tour lasts one hour. Please be aware that this tour includes steep staircases that may be unsuitable for people with mobility issues.

Explore the Old Town at night with Dr Andy Russel visiting a number of Southampton’s medieval vaults. Please bring a torch with you to ward off ghosts! This is an outside walking activity. Please note that this tour is not accessible for wheelchairs or people with mobility problems.

Professor Anne Curry, author of many books on the battle and chair of the Agincourt 600 commemorative fund, explores what really happened on that fateful 25 October 1415, as well as how and why Agincourt is remembered today. Refreshments available.

Artist Talk: Ben Johnson Sat 28 Nov / Art Gallery / 2pm-3pm £2 / Pre-book
Join artist Ben Johnson for an afternoon talk at Southampton City Art Gallery as he discusses his exhibition: Spirit of Place, his first retrospective show. Ben Johnson is the only painter to have been made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. His paintings, prints and drawings are held in public collections throughout the UK including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and Tate and in many museums worldwide.

Visit the stunning Visions of the Universe Space Exhibition and then use relief plaster casting to create a sculpture of men on the moon. 7 year olds must be accompanied by an adult.

Come and create super-sized Christmas decorations with plenty of sparkle!

Spend the day sculpting a reindeer with artist Liza Morgan. You will learn how to use wire to create an armature that can then be developed into a magnificent festive deer. 7 year olds must be accompanied by an adult.

Tudor House & Garden opens its doors to all as we celebrate the history and heritage of Southampton. For a small charge why not try your hand at archery, sign up for an attic and cellar tour or hop on a vintage bus and take a tour.
Please note that space is limited for all activities. Charges apply for tours. Archery is weather dependent.
SO: To Speak SO: To Speak is Southampton’s first Festival of Words, running for ten days from 23 October to 1 November. Events are taking place at a host of venues in the city, that embrace writing, books, poetry, Spoken Word, theatre, comedy and song, and celebrate the talent that we have in the city. Halloween and Night at the Museum

The home of Halloween! Meet our friendly spirits in the banqueting hall, pick up your witch trail, have your face painted and make spooky craft items. Why not join one of our ghost tours which are running throughout the day or our special Torchlight Tours. The Museum will be open until 9pm so you can pop in for the evening.
Small charges will apply to craft activities and tours. Pre-booking is required for our Torchlight Tours at 4pm or 7pm.

Meet Father Christmas in the nostalgic setting of Tudor House & Garden. Each child will have the opportunity to meet Father Christmas, receive a souvenir photo and a gift to take home. Places are very limited on a first come first served basis – so book early to avoid disappointment for this popular activity. Families can book more than one child but each child must be paid for at booking.
