We’re delighted that you’re interested in joining the team at Lakeland Arts as Fundraising Officer. Lakeland Arts is an independent charity and one of the most remarkable arts and heritage organisations in the North. We run an exceptional portfolio of attractions in an area of outstanding natural beauty and cultural heritage.

You’ll be joining us at an exciting time as we opened our spectacular new museum, The Windermere Jetty Museum last year, following a £20 million major capital development. Through our exhibition, learning and skills development programme and our Conservation Workshop we bring science, engineering and ecology together with arts and culture, reflecting the inspiration of the world-class boat collection and its wonderful location on the shores of Windermere. Designed by Carmody Groarke architects, Windermere Jetty has already won several prestigious awards for design and boat conservation.

Abbot Hall Art Gallery is home to a nationally significant art collection. It is one of the largest of its kind in the North, spanning the historic to contemporary, including watercolours by J M W Turner and John Ruskin, a strong Modern British collection including works by Lucian Freud and Bridget Riley, and the work of European Modernist Kurt Schwitters, created during his final years in Cumbria. From grassroots beginnings in the late 1950s, Abbot Hall has built a reputation nationally and internationally for curating major new exhibitions, such as Taking Flight: St Ives in the 1950s (2015) and Ruskin, Turner & the Storm Cloud (2019), and consistently showing art and artists of the highest quality.

The Lakeland Museum has extensive displays relating to the social and industrial history of the Lake District. Recently, we have worked with local communities to better capture under-represented narratives, such as the Child Labour exhibition, which was produced in col-laboration with Dean Gibson Primary

School and the LGBT+ project, created with Pride in North Cumbria and Queer Artists in Residence Bordello Theatre, which culminated in a new collecting strand for the museum.

Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House is a stunning Grade I listed house overlooking Windermere. It is architect MH Baillie Scott’s greatest house and one of the best examples in the world of an original Arts & Crafts interior. Since opening to the public in 2001 it has displayed the finest Arts & Crafts furniture and furnishings from the permanent collection and attracted a number of significant long-term loans. The house has become a hub for the display of modern and contemporary ceramics and for showing and supporting early to mid-career arts and crafts makers.

Our missionTo inspire all to explore and enjoy arts, heritage and the outstanding places we care for, by visiting our museums and participating in a wide range of activities.Lakeland Arts is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) as part of the Cumbria Museum Consortium (CMC) with Tullie House Art Gallery and Museum and the Wordsworth Trust.

So, what’s it like working as Fundraising Officer at Lakeland Arts?In your role you’ll help make our charitable objectives a reality, including our expanding programme of exhibitions, conservation work and participation activities at our venues and in the community. You’ll build and maintain strong relationships to generate grants and donations from a wide range of sources.

An integral part of a small fundraising team of three, along with the Head of Development and the Membership and Development Support Officer, you’ll

work across all aspects of the fundraising mix.

You’ll produce high quality fundraising applications and proposals to trusts and foundations, statutory and Lottery funders, and help grow income across individual, legacy and digital giving. You’ll collaborate with colleagues across the organisation and build and nurture relationships with external stakeholders to support the delivery of the fundraising strategy.

Working mainly from home, you’ll also spend time in Lakeland Arts’ inspiring venues. We’re constantly adapting to the Covid-19 pandemic and while some of us continue to work from home, with others back on-site and some of us still furloughed, we get together as a team regularly on Zoom.

For this role we’re open to discussing the possibility of reduced hours, flexible start and finish times, or compressed hours.

Life in South LakelandOur venues are surrounded by countryside in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The Lake District National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the countryside outside the Park and around the coast is full of great walks, stunning views and lots of places to visit. Popular sporting and leisure activities include sailing, hill walking, cycling, climbing and running. There are lots of visitor attractions ranging from cruise boats on the lakes, historic buildings, forest parks and nature reserves to top quality restaurants and boutique shops. It’s hardly surprising that this area attracts over 40 million visitors each year. Kendal is a busy market town and boasts the Brewery Arts Centre and plays host to a number of cultural festivals each year. There is easy access by road to Lancaster, Penrith and Carlisle, as well as mainline train connections from Oxenholme station in Kendal to London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

We welcome your application and wish you every success with it.
