Farm to Table Event

On Saturday, August 24, the

museum is planning a farm to

fork event. Participants will

tour local farms and then

come back to the museum to

help prepare a delicious dinner

with fresh ingredients from

the tours. SC’s Chef Ambas-

sador Heidi Trull will be lead-

ing the cooking demonstra-

tion. More information will

be available in July. Partici-

pation will be limited, so be

sure to put it on your calendar

now.

The museum has lost one of its most ardent supporters, Charlie Bill

Martin, who passed away on May 4. Charlie Bill was key in saving

the depot from demolition in the 1970’s. He oversaw the fundraising

campaign to renovate it to house the SC Tennis Hall of Fame, the

Ruth Drake Museum, and the Anderson County Library in the

1980’s, and, along with Dick Gaillard brokered the deal to have Pick-

ens Railway donate the property to the Belton Area Museum Asso-

ciation in 2002 (putting up their own money for capital to ensure the

deal with Anderson County was successful). He faithfully served on

our board, brought in artifacts from his extensive collection of rare

and interesting items for temporary exhibits, gave of his resources to

support the museum's programs, and served as go-to for all ques-

tions about Belton history and its characters. He would often sere-

nade us as well with his favorite songs from yesteryear.

Charlie Bill wrote a series of columns for the Belton-Honea Path

News-Chronicle entitled “A Life, Well Lived.” He compiled his col-

umns into a collection, and at the age of 90 published his first book.

The book is available for sale at various locations, including Nancy’s

Fancies, Clinkscales Drugs, the News-Chronicle Office and at the

museum, with 100% of the proceeds

going to the museum, thanks to

Charlie Bill’s generosity.

New Exhibit Opening-Epidemics: Diseases Gone Wild

The museum will be hosting a new exhibit, Epidemics: Diseases Gone Wild, from June 23 to August 24. In recognition of the 100-year anniversary of the worst epi-demic America and the World experienced, the influenza epidemic of 1918 and 1919, the Belton Area Museum Association will be displaying various artifacts relating to this devastating epidemic that reached even into small towns like Belton, while explor-ing the social and scientific outcomes of this pandemic. We are looking for antique and vintage medical equipment to display to show how medical practices have changed over the years. Artifacts related to the flu epidemic in the Upstate and those who were effected by it are also needed. Bring any artifacts you have to the museum during open hours (Wed -Fri 9 to 2, Sat 10-12) or call 338-7400 to arrange pickup. And make plans to attend the opening celebration on Sunday, June 23, 3-5 pm. There will be a free community health fair and fun activities for children. Many thanks to the City of Belton HTAX and Anderson County ATAX for sponsoring this exhibit.

Hot Chili Eating Contest

On Saturday, April 13, the 10th Annual South Carolina Chili Cook-Off was held on the square in

Belton. The museum hosted the annual Hot Chili Eating Contest. The reigning champion, Eric

Cantrell, was able to keep his title, eating 8 bowls of hot chili. He won an Amazon Fire Stick, Angel

Soft toilet paper and Pepto-Bismol. The second place winner, Irby Langley, ate 7 bowls. He won a

restaurant gift certificate. Thanks to the other contestants who participated: Russell Powell, Robby

Satterfield, Pastor Norman Black, Alyssa Sinicropi, “Stoney” from Classic Rock 101, Patrick Baker,

and Chance Ellison.

Many thanks to Best Buy, who donated the Amazon Fire Stick and also provided the judges for the

contest. Thanks also to our sponsors for this event, Darby Metalworks and Commercial Bank.

Chili Pepper Golf Tournament

Saluda Valley Country Club pulled out all the stops for the 2nd Annual BAMA Chili Pepper Golf Tourney on Friday, April 12. Many thanks to the golfers who par-ticipated, the hole sponsors and the donors for making it a wonderful day for the players. The day started with a Chick Fil A breakfast and endid with crowned cham-pions.

Winners included 1st place team (Patton O’Dell, Daniel Mitchum, Jordan Lurie, Wes Hardy), 2nd place team (Marshall Keys, Anthony Pitts, Charlie Bagwell, Danny Kelly), 3rd place team (Walter Smith, Roy Mac Haggard, Bill Pitts, Austin Green) and 4th place team (Hack Clinkscales, Johnny Lee Smith, Skip Hunter, Les Cole). Closest to the hole winner was Charlie Bagwell and longest drive winner was Hack Clink-scales. During the putting contest, Patton O’Dell sank a hole in one, but instead of taking the purse, he gen-erously donated it back to BAMA.

We would like to thank all our hole sponsors and those who donated prizes. This list includes hole sponsors Clemson Downs, McDougald Funeral Home, SouthState Bank, Belton Comprehensive Den-tistry, Sullivan-King Mortuary, and Trehel Corporation. Donors included Commercial Bank, UPS Store, Anderson County, Visit Anderson, BB&T, Falcon’s Lair, Saluda Valley Country Club, Cobb’s Glenn, Bos-cobel, Piedmont Automotive, Smithfields Country Club, Southern Oaks Golf Club, Palmetto Insurance-Keys Agency, Golf USA, Outback Steakhouse, Town Square Chiropractic, Carolina Parakeet Teas, South-ern Charm Salon and Spa, Sam’s Club, X-Mart/Larry Kirby, TTi, Saluda Quick Stop, and Chick Fil A.
